Original Story Ten ~ Part 11: Again
He Stepped Forward And I whispered, “They… They clipped my wings.” I scrunched my face up to hold back the prevailing tear. It pushed at my eye, It moaned to be let out. My muscles held it back, But they gave in, And it trickled down my cheek. My face glowed bright red in the dark, and my cheeks burned from the need to just let it all go. I was slowly pulled into a cold hug. Nothing felt good to me anymore. Nothing felt warm And nothing felt friendly. But I guess it helped. There was a murmur in my ear, but I didn’t hear it. There was a soft touch on my back, but it hurt my weak wings, and I flinched away. I couldn’t focus. My eyes were blurry. My back felt fragile; delicate. I could’ve sworn I was once a hero. It didn’t feel like it now. No magic could fix this. No magic could fix me. Nothing... But him. "I.. I..." Every breath felt like I was breathing in dust; I choked back my tears. "No. Don't do that. It was a strange sight: any painting I'd ever seen depicted Caul smiling; smiling his warm smile; smiling upon the earth.. Now, his face was darkened. I looked up, and his cold hand lifted to my face, swiping away a lonely tear. I began "I don't think I can do thi-" "NO." Caul roared, and I felt a shudder dance about my spine. "No..." He continued. "You can't give up. Not now. Not here.. Look at all the good you've done; to give up now would be to turn your back on those who need you." "But I don't.. I can't.. I don't have-" "I know." He impeded, "But does it matter?" My face went numb and blank, and everything stopped, just for a moment. Everything was still, and even my tears held themselves back. I stared into his eyes; his grand, brown eyes. I finally broke the silence with a moment of selfish confidence "Can you..." "No, I can't..." He knew I was going to ask for them back. "I honestly can't. These beads - they're ancient - and that was my last one of power... I'm sorry." Silence once again attacked, and our eyes interlocked, as my mouth quavered, and my eyes verged on tearful, once more. I leaned over, wrapping my arms around him, and my head rested on his chest. For just a few moments, nothing that had happened mattered - my mind laying focused on the constant drum of his heart. In those few seconds, I found a new lease of life; light in the darkness; a ladder to climb. I knew I'd be okay, And I knew I'd find a way. All I ever wanted was this, And now, I'd be "Okay." I whispered.
