Joeski asked me who Jill is and why I’ve gone to visit her four years running now (out of the last 5 years) out of sheer curiosity. You guys might be wondering too, so I’ll tell you.
Jill is one of my absolute best friends on the planet. I’ve known her for at least 9 years, as I’ve lived in Colorado for 8 and I knew her before I moved here, although we weren’t as close. We met through Tumblr, like you do, and I remember hearing tornado sirens for the first time in my life shortly after moving to Colorado from Baltimore and talking to her about tornadoes and what you were supposed to do since I knew she lived in Oklahoma and I was freaked the hell out.
Jill is: no judgements ever. No matter what you tell her. She listens, she relates, she’s compassionate, and kind. Jill knows all of my backstory, and my secrets, because she’s the kind of person who genuinely cares about you as a person. She remembers the little details about me like that I hate violence and gore, am afraid of bees, and love a good candid photo. She knows that I’ve recreated the perfect waterfall scene from 2015 twice already and she’ll slide down the trail on her ass if she has to, to do it for me a third time. She’s funny, she’s woke af, she’ll read a blog post I’ve written on themes of critical literacy and understand it, and listen to me excitedly talk about a research proposal even though she doesn’t. Her meme literacy is entirely compatible with mine, and she’s all of the above mentioned things while still being a friend who just gets it. Who knows how difficult mental health is and who you can text at 3 in the morning when you’re having a rough night and will never judge you for being silent for months when you were dealing with things; she’ll just offer support and understanding. She offers insight and dark humor and just a general human relatedness to all of the ugly.
She’s also my nature friend: someone who also escaped her hometown in search of a more beautiful landscape and a place accepting of her chosen lifestyle, and she’s the friend I’ve always needed who you can talk to about anything and everything for hours but who you can also just sit, silently, staring into the ocean with and admiring its beauty.
That’s why four years total, and three in a row, I’ve gone to visit her. Because her house feels like home and her and her wife Maeve feel like family and because when I’m there and I’m with her I never feel out of place. That’s who Jill is. And that’s why as long as I can help it, I’ll never skip a year in between visits again.
