Ingredient: Benzocaine, menthol, benzalkonium chloride.

Dosage Form*:

Regular Strength Gel*: 10% benzocaine.

Mouth Swabs: 20% benzocaine.

Mouth Sore Rinse: 1.5% hydrogen peroxide.

Severe Toothache Pain Relief Cream: Benzocaine 20% and menthol 0.25%.

Severe Toothache Pain Relief Gel: Benzocaine 20% and menthol 0.5%.

Maximum Strength Toothache Pain Relief Swabs: Benzocaine 20%.

Mouth Sore Gel: Benzalkonium chloride, benzocaine 20%, and zinc chloride 0.1%.

Film-Forming Canker Sore Gel: Benzocaine 15% and menthol 2%.

Single Dose Cold Sore Treatment: Benzalkonium chloride 0.13% and benzocaine 5%.

Cold Sore Relief and Concealer: Allantoin 0.5% benzocaine 20%, camphor 3%, dimethicone 2%, menthol 1%, and white petrolatum 64%.

Cold Sore Cream: Benzocaine 20% and white petrolatum 74.44%.

*Orajel also markets products for dry mouth, teething relief, and bleeding gums.

FDA Indication/Dosages:

For the temporary relief of pain associated with toothaches or teething pain: Apply directly to the gum area surrounding the affected tooth.

For the temporary relief of pain associated with canker sores, denture irritations, mouth ulcers, orthodontic appliance irritations, and other sores of the mouth and gums (Orajel Mouth-Aid): Apply to affected area as needed.

Pharmacology: Benzocaine is a local anesthetic structurally similar to procaine. It increases the threshold for electrical excitation in the nerve cell by decreasing the permeability of the cell membrane to sodium ions during depolarization. Prolonged use will decrease effectiveness. Benzalkonium chloride is an effective antiseptic against many gram-positive bacteria and some gram-negative bacteria. Chemically, it is a surface-active quaternary ammonium compound that acts by denaturing protein on the bacteria cell membrane. Allantoin may work by stimulating tissue repair of lesions.

Evaluation: Pain is a normal defense mechanism the body uses to alert the brain that tissue damage has occurred or is about to occur. Prolonged pain in the oral cavity may be a sign of a severe condition and should be examined by a physician or dentist. Canker sores are noncontagious small lesions found on the inside of the mouth and lips. They are usually oval and round with a thin white layer or membrane over them and surrounded by a reddish outline. Stress and injury may trigger an outbreak. The lesions heal by themselves within 2 weeks.

Contraindications/Precautions: Do not use for more than two days unless under the direction of a physician. Do not use in the eyes. Do not use under dentures or dental work. Prolonged teething pain or oral pain should be examined by a physician or dentist. Benzocaine may cause allergic reaction in sensitive patients.

Adverse Effects: Rare allergic reactions to benzocaine can occur with prolonged or repeated use.

Patient Consultation:

Ask the patient if this is a reoccurring symptom.

Advise the patient to see a physician or dentist if pain other than canker sores lasts for more than 2 days.

Advise parents to use sparingly for teething pain in infants. Prolonged use is not advisable.
