Rewatches always make you think more about the random stuff that gets swept under the rug. For instance, after Viggo betrays the dragon hunters and gets buried in a mountain, a random monstrous nightmare just…appears. It also ends up saving the man and we just….never see it!? People always picture Viggo with the skrill but forget about that nightmare. Just makes you wonder how that whole thing went down.🤔
yes it does!!
viggo and the nightmare have suuuch good potential, it's such a shame there wasn't enough time to include it in some kind of way, or to show the audience what happened in the cave. on one hand, not showing their bonding leaves something to the imagination, which i think works well enough, it's just a pity we couldn't see what exactly changed viggo's view on dragons so drastically.
viggo's change in general is so interesting to me, i would have loooved an entire season (or ten) to analyse! there are hints in every episode after the volcano that he's began to change, one of the most notably instances being, in my opinion, when he wants fishlegs alive though krogan wants to kill him. it's just quite a difference from earlier seasons viggo, who wouldn't have cared at all.
as for the monstrous nightmare, what i think happened is that the nightmare wasn't actually chasing him, it reacted to the cave-in and tried to get out as well. most dragons don't seem to do well with tight spaces, so when the entrance collapsed, it must have been frightened. and then, seeing that the entrance was closed off, it might have been angry, but not at viggo. we've seen the gang's dragons get angry and scared and "attack" the rocks that closed off the cave, so it might be that.
then for "saving viggo's life". i think maybe the nightmare could have pulled him out of the way of collapsing rock, or maybe the dragon helped him find a way out of the cave system, saving him indirectly.
viggo and the nightmare would have been such a power duo, especially since nightmares are fierce and stubbornly proud themselves, they don't let others walk over them!
either way, i'm sooo sad we never got viggo naming either of his dragons! i love seeing the names characters give to their dragon, whether it's something deep and profound or just overall silly. i think viggo would give his dragons symbolic names, he's pretentious like that.
thank you for the ask!!<3
