âIâm gonna make rounds, I wanna check on how everyoneâs doing,â Randy says, stretched out on the bed with his phone in his hand. Cameronâs next to him, lazily jumping through the TV channels â all in Italian, so he doesnât understand anything.
âYou call Rox first, youâre gonna end up talking to her all afternoon and ditching everyone else,â he tells his husband and he knows Randyâs getting ready to protest, âhey, you know Iâm right, donât even try to deny it.â
âWhatever. How long do we have? Before your momâs party?â Randy asks as he searches for Roxâs number in his contacts.
âTwo hours before you gotta start getting ready. Four before we gotta leave,â Cam tells him as he turns the TV off. He leans over to kiss the other on the cheek and then gets off the bed. âIâm gonna go do some work, thereâs about thirty emails Iâve been ignoring. Tell Rox and Vince to come out for drinks with us once weâre back in New York,â he says and leaves the bedroom.
When Randy dials the number, for a second he wonders if heâs not calling too early, time zones and all, but then Roxane picks up â she doesnât sound like sheâs just woken up so he figures heâs good.Â
âFree to talk?â
âYeah, iâm just at home, working. Had breakfast with your mom because your dadâs case is stretching out.â
âI told you that you shouldnât have agreed to work for him. God forbid you lose and he goes to prison, my motherâs never going to speak to you again. And me, though sheâs already not talking to me. Ever since I said that dad should try and enjoy jail time,â Randy tries not to laugh at the memory of his ill-timed joke-not-really-a-joke he let slip while really wine drunk at the last family dinner. And that was two months ago.Â
âWell, sheâs already stopped talking to Vince, she only passes things on through me. I donât even remember what it was about, the things he said. Your grandmother laughed, your mom, not so much,â Rox tells him and Randy can tell thereâs a smile on her face. He can also tell she absolutely regrets taking the job.Â
âIs he there, too? Put him on, havenât talked to him in ages. At least one Bernstein still wants to talk to him, he should be happy,â Randy says, wedging the phone in between his head and shoulder. He gets off the bed and walks over to the dresser, the top of it currently serving as a mini-bar. He pours himself a drink and, opting out of laying down again, starts walking in circles around the room.
âHey, whatâs up? Arenât you in London right now?â he hears on the other side. For some reason Vincentâs voice makes Randy smile.
âNo, Milan. We flew in yesterday. We saw Damien in London, though. Heâs settling in good, I think.â
âOh, shit, right, the restaurant. Itâs opening in, what, two weeks?â
âThree. Gen is planning our stay, she said sheâs gonna email us everything. Sheâs in Dubai now, planning for the girlsâ wedding. And thatâs in two months and sheâs also going to email you everything.â
âJesus, what else are we gonna get emails about?â Rox cuts in and chuckles.
âCameronâs launch, probably. Itâs next month, on our anniversary weekend. Genâs responsible for that, too. Sheâs really busy these days and not just with our shit. I feel like sheâs planning weddings and parties for half of Manhattan. Canât wait to have her plan my future sonâs bar mitzvah,â Randy chuckles into the phone and he can hear the others laughing on the other side, too. âHowâs my goddaughter doing?â he asks, since heâs steered the conversation onto children.Â
âSheâs still at summer camp,â Rox starts off, clearly wanting to go on, but Vince cuts her off.
âKinda like your dad,â he jokes which makes Randy burst out laughing.Â
âThatâs the joke I couldnât remember,â Roxane says, âthatâs why your mom doesnât want to talk to my husband anymore,â she tells Randy, trying not to laugh either. She shouldnât â theyâre talking about their client.Â
âThatâs a good one, Iâm gonna have to remember it for Cam later.â
âIs he around? Havenât talked to him in a while. But I saw his new collection, itâs beautiful,â Roxane says. Before he can reply, Vince has to excuse himself from the conversation, to take another call.Â
âHeâs working. If we talk for two hours, heâll be back to make me get off the phone and youâll be able to catch him. You free for that long?â
âIâve got enough stuff to talk about for ten.â
âSo we better get on with it.â
â
âI canât wait for you guys to see them in person, though. Cam did such a good job on the dresses, I swear to God,â Maggie says, staring at the laptop screen. She wishes the view wasnât so blurry but with her, Ada and Gen here in Dubai, and Abigail and Matt in Mexico, itâs as good as it can get.Â
âJust a little longer. We canât wait either,â Abi says with a smile before she turns her head to the side. Sheâs waving her hand, most probably at Matt, ushering him to join her for the video chat. âGive him a minute, heâs getting drinks.â
âGood idea,â Ada says and gets up from the couch. She heads for the mini-bar and leaves with three glasses in one hand and a bottle of champagne in the other. Not a minute has passed before sheâs back in her spot, in between Maggie and Gen. She pours each of them a drink and when sheâs almost done, Matt joins Abigail on the other side.Â
âWhen are you guys coming back? Itâs been likeâwhat, three months now?â Gen asks now.
âWe might come back next month. Iâm still not done writing and Mattâs booked a shoot here, which is not for another two weeks,â Abi explains and gladly accepts a drink from her boyfriend.Â
âWe thought we might come back to New York two weeks before the wedding, take care of our stuff and recover and then fly over to you guys, maybe even earlier than the whole party,â Matt explains.
âPromise youâll shave before, you look disturbing,â Gen tells him and takes a sip of champagne. Her comment makes everyone laugh â everyone except for the man in question.Â
âHey, thatâs rude,â he protests, brushing his fingers through his unruly beard. âAnd you, too? Unbelievable,â he says, turning to Abigail, whoâs laughing. She shrugs and smiles bright at the computer screen.Â
âHey, youâre not gonna ruin our wedding pictures by looking like Sasquatch. Iâm gonna shave it off personally, if you show up here looking like that,â Ada says â at first she tries to sound threatening but soon enough her face falls and she laughs.Â
âAnd donât test my future wife, she means it,â Maggie adds and refills everyoneâs glasses. She leans her head on Adaâs shoulder and, oddly enough for her, prefers to keep quiet and let everyone else talk for a while.Â
âSpeaking of marriage and shit, howâs husband number twoâ three, sorry,â Matt says, the question, of course, pointed at Gen. She can tell the mistake was intentional.
âHey, watch it,â she warns the man, though a second later thereâs a smile on her face. âIn Japan, with Lowell, on business. And speaking of Lowell, your brother has been really moody lately. And wonât pick up calls from anyone.â
âOh, yeah. I tried calling him last week, too, bastard wonât answer,â Ada nods and stares at the screen, hoping that Abigail can supply them with an answer.Â
âHe wonât tell me whatâs up with him. He says heâs busy with work, all the time. And he is, of course, but thereâs something else and he wonât say what it is. But donât worry, he promised heâs all yours for the wedding week. Hope he doesnât overworks himself before then,â Abigail explains and makes a mental note to call her brother again and bother him for⌠well, whatever heâs willing to tell her.Â
âI think heâs got someone and he doesnât wanna tell us,â Maggie cuts in, deeming Lowell as the topic that makes her want to engage in the conversation again. âI mean, heâs always like that when he starts seeing someone, right? Acts all mysterious, even to you,â she says, the last bit pointed at Abi.
âActually, sheâs right,â Gen agrees and downs her drink. âIt was the same when we started seeing each other and that was years ago.â
âOh my God, youâre right,â Abigail says, the realization hitting her like a ton of bricks. She turns to Matt, âwhy didnât I think of that?â She asks and then looks at the laptop screen again. âWhat time is it in Tokyo right now? I gotta call him, like, right now.â
âUhâlike three in the morning. So youâre gonna have to wait and let him sleep,â Ada says, putting her phone away.Â
âDonât tell anyone, though. Especially Randy, heâs going to make a whole conspiracy theory out of it, trying to figure out who it is that Lowell is seeing,â Matt says and Abigail hits him in the arm lightly, âwhat? Iâm right.â
âHe is,â both Ada and Gen agree with him at the same time which makes everyone, including Abi, laugh.Â
âOkay, whatever. Talk about the wedding, please, itâs gonna distract me from trying to become Randy and start thinking about my brotherâs love life.â
âOh, be careful what you wish for, Gen is gonna talk your head off.â
â
âWhat time is it over there?â Damien asks. He sets the pile of books down on the floor â unpacking is going to have to wait â and instead heads to the kitchen to get himself a glass of wine.Â
âLate. I canât sleep, though,â Lowell answers on the other side. His hotel room is quiet and dark as he lays in bed. Thereâs silence on the line for a long while.Â
âI wasnât sure youâd want to talk to me. After last time,â Damien finally says, remembering their last conversation â a fight, is more like it. âAnd now youâre calling me when you canât sleep,â he goes on, though unsure of how to finish his thought. So he doesnât. Silence falls on the line once again but Damien doesnât want to be the one to break it again.
âI miss you,â Lowell says and itâs clear it takes a lot for him to say that out loud. âWhat I said last time about you leaving meâ I didnât mean that, you know that, right?â He says and Damien can hear the apology in his voice, even though a sorry is not going to be said. âRight?âÂ
âI donât know. You sounded very convincing,â Damien sighs and drinks half of his wine. He winces because the memory of the last time they spoke pops up in his head again. Lowellâs voice sounded so different then. Vicious. Itâs far from that now.Â
âIâm sorry,â Lowell says and Damienâs really taken aback â he wasnât expecting that. Theyâre both silent again, either one unsure of what to say next.Â
âApology accepted,â Damien finally replies and Lowell smiles. Another long pause.
âHow are you settling in?â Lowell asks. He turns to lay on his back and stares at the ceiling.Â
âI was unpacking my books when you called. Iâm doing one box a day, donât really have time for any more than that. I feel like Iâm running late with everything and Iâve only got three weeks left,â Damien explains. He goes back to the living room and drops onto the couch, glass of wine still in hand.Â
âYouâll do great. You always do,â Lowell tells him. Theyâre silent again, mostly because thereâs too much to say.
âWhat about you? Howâs the trip going?â
âIâm buying some stocks for my father. Iâmâ Iâm going to be in London next week. For a merger.â
âIs that why you called?â
âI guess.â
Damien sighs and finishes his drink. Lowell shifts around in bed.
âHow long are you planning to stay for?â Damien asks.
âUntil your opening, at least. Permanently, if you still want me to,â Lowell says, though he struggles with his words for a second there. Thereâs more silence.
âYouâre telling everyone about us, though. Revenge for being an asshole,â Damien says and laughs. Lowell chuckles and agrees.
Are you not doing Opulens now that you have this new project?
What? Of course Iâm still doing Opulens! Itâs just Iâve had this idea for this group for a while now and Lynn somehow managed to actually get me to finish the idea. I donât know, but if you ask me itâs witchcraft. But Opulens doesnât accept until the 15th and this is a good distraction while we wait to see if we got in or not. But I know we both donât plan on opening the group for a while since weâll both be going to school soon. But long story short, yes I am still very much interested in Opulens and I am far too attached to this little asshole Lowell to just drop it that quickly!
