Quantum sensor research advances the pursuit of dark matter

Researchers at the Department of Energy's Oak Ridge National Laboratory are helping to pave a path for the eventual discovery of dark matter. With new approaches to measurement in the quantum realm, using quantum optical sensing techniques, ORNL scientists are developing the methods required to achieve sight beyond sight—and detect this mysterious, invisible, yet seemingly ubiquitous substance. Through its commitment to facilitating an innovative, quantum-enhanced future while advancing energy competitiveness and security, ORNL is deploying its own wide-ranging expertise and capabilities to create safer, faster, more reliable solutions—at the quantum scale. Leveraging advanced detection capabilities, quantum sensing has the potential to enable detection of previously unobservable phenomena, such as new properties of materials or the fundamental building blocks of our universe.

A new milestone has been set for levitated optomechanics as Prof. Tongcang Li's group observed the Berry phase of electron spins in nano-sized diamonds levitated in vacuum. Physicists at Purdue are throwing the world's smallest disco party. The disco ball itself is a fluorescent nanodiamond, which they have levitated and spun at incredibly high speeds. The fluorescent diamond emits and scatters multicolor lights in different directions as it rotates. The party continues as they study the effects of fast rotation on the spin qubits within their system and are able to observe the Berry phase. The team, led by Tongcang Li, professor of Physics and Astronomy and Electrical and Computer Engineering at Purdue University, published their results in Nature Communications. Reviewers of the publication described this work as "arguably a groundbreaking moment for the study of rotating quantum systems and levitodynamics" and "a new milestone for the levitated optomechanics community."

Long-lived soundwaves in crystalline solids

A new study published in Nature Physics describes how a team of scientists used a laser beam to gain access to long-lived soundwaves in crystalline solids as the basis for a potentially new approach to information processing and storage. One of Northern Arizona University's newest physicists, assistant professor Ryan Behunin, is a co-author of the study. In collaboration with scientists at Yale and the University of Rochester, he helped develop the theory describing these bulk crystalline optomechanical systems.

"Through an effect called 'Brillouin scattering,' an intense laser beam passing through a transparent medium can produce soundwaves as well as new colors of light," Behunin said. "This type of interaction between light and sound falls into a domain of physics called optomechanics. Within specially designed pristine crystalline systems at very low temperatures, Brillouin scattering can produce soundwaves that persist very long times, much longer than at room temperature.

"This phenomenon is intriguing because the longer a soundwave lives, the more useful it can be for things such as precision sensors—or for use with quantum computers, systems that can achieve exponential speeds over your desktop computer for certain types of calculations."

Researchers create practical and versatile microscopic optomechanical device

Researchers have developed a new type of optomechanical device that uses a microscopic silicon disk to confine optical and mechanical waves. The new device is highly customizable and compatible with commercial manufacturing processes, making it a practical solution for improving sensors that detect force and movement.

Optomechanical devices use light to detect movement. They can be used as low-power, efficient building blocks for the accelerometers that detect the orientation and movement of a smart phone or that trigger a car's airbag to deploy split seconds after an accident. Scientists are working to make these devices smaller and even more sensitive to movement, forces and vibrations.

Identifying the smallest movements requires extremely high levels of interaction, or coupling, between light waves, which are used for detection, and the mechanical waves that are tied to movement. In The Optical Society journal Optics Express, researchers from the University of Campinas, Brazil, report that their new bullseye disk design achieves coupling rates that match those of the best lab-based optomechanical devices reported.

Gimbal mirror mounts provide 360 degree coarse positioning in two axes about the mirror surface in addition to fine adjustments. The device can be either base mounted or post mounted. Optics held in position by a threaded ring inside a threaded bore of the device.
