Sergei Eisenstein (with all the soviet passion) scolded German film expressionism, however, in "Ivan the Terrible" he tried to match the methods of directors of the Weimar era and even looked for an actor for the role of Basmanov, most likely on the young Conrad, who was the personification of expressionism in 1920.

Сharacter 1: Oprichnik (maybe Theodor Basmanov)
Oprichnik was the designation given to a member of the Oprichnina, a bodyguard corps established by Tsar Ivan the Terrible to govern a division of Russia from 1565 to 1572.

The role of Basmanov is the only so-called “trouser role” (a male role written to be performed by women) in Tchaikovsky’s operas. The queer sexual subtext surrounding the character is quite overt and caused trouble for both Imperial and later Soviet censors. We stan a legend.
