IC 59 (вверху) и IC 63 находятся на расстоянии около 600 световых лет от нас. Они рассеиваются под действием ионизующего ультрафиолетового излучения горячей яркой звезды γ Кассиопеи, расположенной всего в 3-4 световых годах от туманностей. Туманность IC 63 находится чуть ближе к звезде, поэтому в ней доминирует красное излучение в линии Hα, возникающее, когда ионизованные атомы водорода рекомбинируют с электронами. Более далекая от γ Cas туманность IC 59 излучает гораздо меньше в линии Hα, зато она больше светится характерным голубым, отраженным от частичек пыли светом звезды.
