Wrote this about halfway through April because I am a sucker for tender-hearted things. Would really love to hear your thoughts if any!! ♥️ Operation Varsity always opens up blundering epiphanies. (P.S. I will always love Harry Welsh)
Chapters: 2/2 Relationship: Lewis Nixon/Richard Winters Fandom: Band of Brothers (TV 2001) Characters: Richard Winters, Lewis Nixon, Harry Welsh Additional Tags: First Kiss, Period Typical Attitudes
Summary:
“We can’t find Winters.” Harry was leaning against his doorway. “What the fuck do you mean you can’t find, Dick? How long since–” “Last night.” — Lewis Nixon comes back relatively (physically) unscathed from Operation Varsity. Dick Winters is missing. Harry Welsh has assumptions about his two best buddies that he's been keeping to himself for a very long time.

"The rest of the boys?"
"They blew up over Germany somewhere. Boom."
"Yeah. Yeah, I'm sorry."
"About what?"
"Well, tough situation for theă…ˇ"
"Oh, yeah. The boys, yeah. Terrible. Oh, well, it wasn't me."
Operation Varsity was the last major airborne operation of World War II. Captain Lewis Nixon parachuted with US 17th Airborne Division and British 6th Airborne Division including 1st Canadian Parachute Battalion on March 24, 1945.

Help Us Make Rhineland 45!Â
I'm very excited to have been invited to join the 'Rhineland 45' project by Real Time History, the team behind 'The Great War' and '16 Days in Berlin'. They have a track record of making truly excellent documentaries.Â
The new project aims to create an in-depth documentary series about the last major operations in the west during World War Two. I'm looking forward to examining the weapons and equipment used by both sides during the battles and can't wait to get started!Â
In the video above I talk about how I'll be exploring the human aspects of the weapons and equipment used to explain how soldiers on both sides actually fought.Â
The Rhineland campaign of early 1945 are often overshadowed by Operation Market Garden and the Soviet advance on Berlin. The campaign is no less fascinating or important and that’s why its important that the Rhineland 45 project becomes a reality.Â
If you’d like to support the project and help us make a truly ambitious documentary series about an overlooked World War Two campaign then check out the Kickstarter page for more info!Â
Please share the video around, we'd love to reach as many people as possible!
Operation Varsity
Varsity constituted the largest Airborne operation ever staged in one single day. A combined force of 17,000 men, were dropped in just over two hours in an area containing 85,000 German troops.
The Germans knew they were coming. So heavy was the flak they encountered, that an observer - General James Gavin - flying above the air armada counted 23 aircraft going down at one time
The 17th Airborne lost 159 men with 522 wounded; the British 6 Airborne listed 347 dead and 731 wounded.
56 aircraft in total were lost during the March 24th 1945 (21 out of the 144 transport aircraft transporting the 17th Airborne were shot down and 59 were damaged by antiaircraft fire)
The cause of this high casualty rate can most likely be traced to the fact that the operation was launched in full daylight, rather than a night-assault. (The planners believed that the troops being less scattered a daytime operation)
Despite fierce resistance from some German units and comparatively high casualty rates among the attacking Allied forces, most objectives were taken within a few hours.
Operation VARSITY was later much criticized as an unnecessary operation.
