Operation VARSITY, conducted on 24 March 1945, was the largest airborne operation ever executed in a single day. More than 16,000 British and American airborne troops of the 6th and 17th Airborne Divisions were dropped east of the Rhine in support of Operation PLUNDER, the Allied forces’ massive river crossing into Germany. Together, these operations marked the final breach of Germany’s western defenses and signaled the approaching end of the war in Europe
