What one thing made your year immeasurably more satisfying?
this is going to sound cheesy as fuck, but V. absolutely V. i wouldn’t push myself as hard as i do if it wasn’t for him. he’s not solely responsible for my rising self esteem and general ability to see my self worth, but he definitely encourages what i’ve been doing to obtain it. i was afraid to do a lot of things this year. wildly different, but i ultimately faced the same anxiety.
i started therapy (and eventually medication) again, i went to more cons in actual cosplay, i went to a new con that i was honestly worried i couldn’t handle because of how much we would have to rely on the subway, i allowed myself experiences i would have been too nervous to approach on my own. i think the most meaningful experience was when i was pregnant and he supported me even though it was something neither of us was prepared to deal with. and the miscarriage helped us figure out our future, and it ended up being one of those heartbreaking situations we found answers in.
and despite the hurt that comes with thinking back on it now, he was half of the reason i got to meet and thank Carrie Fisher at NYCC. if it wasn’t for him waiting in line while i got my photo op with her, i wouldn’t have that experience. and of course, that experience itself also made 2016 a year that i can find satisfaction in, despite how horribly it went in the last couple months. but again, everything comes back to V. he’s my rock, he’s given me faith in my ability to love without toxicity, and he never once considered leaving me when things got hard and i lost myself. and i know that because he communicates with me, something i never got from anyone else i’ve dated.
idk, there’s a lot of shit both of us had to go through to find one another (abusive relationships on both our parts, most notably), but it’s hysterical how many times we could have met in the past (we have a lot of mutual friends from before we started talking), and only found each other when the timing was right. i’m just glad i suffered through the dregs of humanity who exist on OKCupid and had the presence of mind to remember his name there so i could find him after i got banned (yeah, that happened, lmao) and keep in contact with him.
What's your favorite dinner?
Ahhh um well I like a lot of things?? I love tikka masala a lot, and vindaloo (honestly I don’t get picky about the meat in it; my first time having Indian food was swordfish vindaloo, lmao), but Indian food is expensive and there aren’t many Indian restaurants near me that aren’t a hike out to New Haven. I also love this curry soup from this Chinese restaurant near Yale (aptly name Ivy Wok). And anything my little Italian grandmother makes is like a default fave because I’ve been eating that since I was a kid and it never changes. But my favorite thing she makes isn’t even a dinner, it’s a side, but this cold broccoli salad she makes with lemon juice, salt, oil, and garlic, and that’s it. That’s all it is and it’s SO good.

14. are you a musician?
Not professionally, no. I sing all right; I’m by no means a professional, but I can keep my voice in key. I’d like to take singing lessons starting this summer if I can swing it, but who the frick knows with a possible two job schedule?
15. five most influential books over your lifetime.
EEEE I like this one. Okay, um.
Sense & Sensibility by Jane Austen. I identify with Marianne Dashwood like no one else in an Austen novel, and it’s really the book that gave me comfort in my sense of self, because people like me have always existed.
The Harry Potter series by J.K. Rowling. I’m counting them all as one book in this list because just the whole series was my escape through a turbulent childhood, adolescence, and even part of my adult life.
The Green Mile by Stephen King. I can’t really explain this one, but it always stuck with me. John Coffey is just one of those unforgettable characters that you’ll remember ‘til the day you die.
Pride & Prejudice by Jane Austen. Where Sense & Sensibility gave me comfort in my identity, Pride & Prejudice gave me a person I desired to be like. Honestly, if I could be half as confident and self aware as Lizzy Bennet, I’d die happy.
Much Ado About Nothing by William Shakespeare. I know it’s not a book, but I really don’t care. This is the book that clinched my interest in English as a subject and paved the way to me becoming a writer, I think. Maybe it was a combo of this and Pride & Prejudice, but I wouldn’t have been nearly as interested in writing were it not for this.
ryan adams - desire
couldn’t listen all the way through | not my thing | it’s okay | kinda catchy | ok i really like this | downloading immediately | already in my library
Thank you for the ask! :)
