Once upon a time, there lived a young girl named Aurora Briar Rose. Her father liked to call her A.B., her mother liked to call her Rora, and she loved the sound of either name. She grew up in a very nice home, in a very nice neighbourhood in Idaho. She was an only child, and yet she was remarkably unspoiled. For the first ten years of her life, things were perfect and happy until very suddenly, they weren’t.
Rora began to fall asleep at random, often causing herself injuries in the process. Her parents thought is was narcolepsy and took her in for tests with the local magic folk hospital. The healers believed it was narcolepsy as well, at least they did at first. Then, Aurora would tell them about the dreams she had. They were vague at first, but very quickly, they became very, very lifelike. They were dreams of things that hadn’t happened yet. Some of the dreams were very clear, and some of them were more symbolic, but all were true. She was a gifted dreamer, someone who could tell the future through their dreams.
The gift she had felt far more like a curse. Besides the injuries she might attain, the dreams were often terrifying and traumatizing. With no one to protect her inside the dream, she found it very difficult to cope, and it began to eat away at her mind. To make matters worse, she fell asleep more and more frequently. Not knowing what to do, and unable to help their daughter, they sent her to live with some specialized healers in the forest, hoping she may overcome her condition, if only a little.
When she was thirteen she was accepted to Ilvermorny and she immediately became enthralled with divination classes. For the first time she felt a step closer to having some kind of control over her curse. She even began taking classes with the headmaster, professor Cato Pillar. Initially, things seemed to be going very well but it wasn’t long before her gift took over. Over the years, she’s been falling asleep more and more and for longer. The dream is almost always the same or some variation of it. She sees the castle being covered in thorns, and she sees herself being covered in them. She’s worried that she’s seeing her death, and she’s worried that the next time she falls asleep, she just won’t wake up. She wants to reach out to someone, anyone for help, but her classmates are afraid of her, afraid they’re going to be around when she breaks.
