“Shit. I gotta pick Brian up.” He muttered, feeling for his phone. When he clicked the screen on he cringed at the six missed calls. Fuck.
“You guys are pretty serious then?” Jake quipped, leaning his hip against the arm of the couch.
“Yeah. I mean, he lives with me now.” Bradley blinked, still distracted by all the texts he needed to catch up on.
“Doesn’t mean it’s serious. He could just be looking for a place to stay.” Jake smiled sharply. “Since ‘ya barely know him.”
That snapped Bradley’s head up quick.
“Yeah, he’s with me for housing. Because he couldn’t possibly want to be with me for any other reason.” Bradley said sharply, hurt curling in his stomach. “Believe it or not, just because you didn’t want to be with me, doesn’t mean other people don’t.”
Jake’s smile faded. “So you like him.”
Bradley let out a slow breath, forcing himself not to react how he wanted. “Yeah, Jake. I like him.”
Jake opened his mouth like he had something else to say. Maybe another poor taste joke or quip. But he just stood there, green eyes glued to the couch. Opening. Closing.
Bradley was about to ask him what, but Jake took a quick step back.
“Good for you then.” Jake turned swiftly on his feet toward the door. He looked over his shoulder at the threshold, the epitome of unbothered. “See you around, Bradshaw.”
Bradley rolled his eyes and looked down at the sandwich Jake brought him. Italian. No mustard or pickles. How the hell did he remember his order after all this time?
He clenched his jaw and unwrapped the paper, his stomach growling from not eating since breakfast. He wasn’t going to let his mind wander to Jake. Or what they could have been. Jake had his chance, and he’d lost it.
