Of obsessions and mishaps: A short story

When Morwenna Zoe Johnson was 9 years old, her mother abandoned her and her father. What was Alice’s excuse? “My husband is always working and does not have time for me. I’m leaving!” 

While this was true, Ethan Johnson, a distinguished lawyer, would shower her in gifts and money, which was clearly not enough. So off she went to an ever richer, younger man.

But things would change when, on her third year, Jonathan Gillespie moved into her dorm. They had shared some classes, but it wasn’t until they became roommates that they truly clicked. Almost out of med-school, he was slightly difficult to be around sometimes. He grew up in wealth, and was taught he was the best child that ever lived. And in many aspects he was quite amazing, which only fed into his ego. But this didn’t mean much to Morwenna, since she had been surrounded by snobs all her life. There was something about Jon, however, that would put everyone else to shame: his heart of gold. He would organize food drives, health week where people could get free healthcare advice, blood drives, anything his community needed. Which also meant dragging her into them.

It might surprise you that Ethan decided to change his whole life to become the best father he could. He quit the firm, started working independently from home, sold his big house and moved them to a more modest one. They had their ups and downs, but he was a good father. And she loved him very much.

Being a criminal defense attorney, Ethan was interested in true crime as a hobby. He would watch documentaries and read books about it. As Morwenna grew into a teenager, she became rebellious and they would fight all the time. So he decided to introduce her to the world of true crime. She loved it, and they would bond over it. The fights stopped. But the obsession started.

“As long as she’s not getting into trouble, I’m fine with it,” he would tell his husband. Hank didn’t agree. But, as an educator, he had seen so many relationships ruined because of a child resenting their step-parent for meddling. So he just let it go.

That’s how they met Ainsley Jennings, a chemistry engineer doing a post-graduate degree who would also volunteer to help. They became fast friends. She had an obsession too: old cars. She had a fully equipped garage where she would spend hours fixing old cars with her husband. She would put a proper mechanic to shame. So, the three friends shared their obsessions with each other freely. They even helped each other with it sometimes.

Perhaps they should have stepped in, but they didn’t. So this obsession followed her to university, where she was studying biology. At first she would hide it from everyone, but once she got cozy into a relationship she’d let it out. She broke-up with many a boyfriend because of it.
