 I will be defining what a book is and what could a book be in the future.

A book has many different types of definitions.  According to Merriam Webster a book has nine different definitions for what it could be. The first definition is “a set of written sheets of skin or paper or tablets of wood or ivory”. (Merriam Webster) I think this definition is more for when books were first made. The second definition is “a set of written, printed, or blank sheets bound together between a front and back cover”. (Merriam Webster) I don’t think this is a great way to example what a book is. Merriam Webster also defines a book as a script of a play. In my opinion, the best definition of a book I found on the internet was on dictionary dot com. They define a book as “a handwritten or printed work of fiction or nonfiction, usually on sheets of paper fastened or bound together within covers.” (Dictionary) In my own eyes I agree with what they stated I think a book is a written or printed, true or made up with the paper all together with a cover on the front and back.  I think this is the correct technical term for a book.  But you can define a book in many ways it just depends on what you consider a book. My definition is more of the original boring term for what is a book. Some definitions only consider a book to be ones that have been published publicly. I don’t agree with that definition of a book because if I write a book but it doesn’t get published what is it? What would you have called? It’s still technically a book, right? That’s how I would define what a book is.

Next I will explain to you what I think a book will be in the future. I think books with move to the online version of books. I know we already have a lot of books on kindles and stuff like that. I think we will add all of the books and textbooks on to electronics. Electronics have become a way of life recently now everyone has a smartphone and is concisely on them you barely see people reading the newspaper or a book they’re always on their phone reading something. “In the future books will be cheaper and more easily accessible”. (Agresta) Having an electronic book has many positives to it. “You get the full book–all the words on the page or screen–but you also get so much more. And ask yourself: Which would you rather have, the hardcover book of today or this rich, multimedia treatment of the same title?” (Penenberg) I feel like you’ll get much more out of a book in the future then you do now. Even though many people are not for the change to electronic books it will be for the better the generations to come. The future if the hardcover book is slowly coming to an end. I believe future generation will get more from electronic books and can be more proactive then with hardcover. For example, as a college student I don’t want to have to carry my textbooks to and from class if all my books are on my laptop all I have to do is carry my lab top rather than log five different books to five of my classes. The future for books will be very interesting.

That is my thoughts on what a book is and what could a book be in the future.

This is an interactive book of inspiration. The cover has a mirror (which broke *sad face*) because taking control of your feelings starts with yourself. So you would start by looking in the mirror and accepting and loving yourself first. You can then use the popsicle sticks to write down inspirational quotes for different types of feelings. There are also other interactive ways to take control of your feelings as well such as writing and keeping track of your goals when you are feeling goal-oriented and are seeking motivation.

HIDDEN PRIDE by Elanna Heda

The Pride flag was created by San Francisco’s Gay Freedom Day decorations committee in 1978. The committee was co-chaired by Gilbert Baker and Lynn Segerblom. Bright colors had long been associated with the queer community, and Baker used this knowledge to create the idea for the original pride flag: horizontal stripes of pink, red, orange, yellow, green, turquoise, blue, and violet. Segerblom devised the dyeing technique so that they could get the correct shades on such massive pieces of cloth. The flag went down to seven colors when they cut out pink. They wanted to be able to mass-produce the flag; however, at the time, hot pink was non-standard color, so they had to remove it. Later, they removed turquoise so that the flag would be an even number; San Francisco’s Gay Freedom Day Parade wanted to split the flag in half on either side of the street, so they asked the committee to adjust it. These adjustments created the rainbow flag that most people today are familiar with.

This accordion/star book is a testament to the themes and efforts Baker and Segerblom gave to the original Pride flag. From the outside, it is simply a fun, colorful accordion-style book or star-shaped paper decoration. However, once the reader opens it, it is a celebration of one of the key moments in the history of Pride. Each color has the meaning ascribed to it written out as well as a small blurb explaining that meaning. The book is called Hidden Pride for two reasons: 1) When the book is shut, it is not obvious that the book is related to the queer community, and 2) The book describes a piece of queer history that is not well known, i.e. it is “hidden.”

This is my book. It’s not pretty, but that’s because my change to book design is in a way that deliberately wouldn’t look much different than current books. My hypothetical book design would use a companion mobile app that would allow the reader to interact with the book. This would include AR illustrations as well as interactive activities such as puzzles and other games.
