I've talked about it a lot more on my main tumblr and my private social media but I firmly believe that Black Lives Matter, I desperately want change in my country, and I urge all of my American followers to vote this November because we really really need a change and we need love and respect and care to win out over this senseless hatred and violence. I know that we may not have the perfect candidate on the ballot but literally anything is better than this.
It's November 5th. In 2015, the United Nations designated this day as 🌊 World Tsunami (津波) Awareness Day. The idea for this annual event was the brainchild of Japan, which due to its repeated, bitter experiences with natural disasters over the years, has built up a major body of tsunami expertise.
Tsunamis are rare events, but they can be extremely deadly. Over the past hundred years, 58 tsunamis have killed more than 260,000 people, or an average of 4,600 per episode – more than any other type of natural disaster. The most tragic event during that period was the Indian Ocean Tsunami of December 2004, which killed 227,000 people in 14 countries. Indonesia, Sri Lanka, India, and Thailand were the hardest hit.
The goal of this year's World Tsunami Awareness Day is to secure commitments from the world's governments and major corporations to “substantially enhance international cooperation to developing countries through adequate and sustainable support to complement their national actions by 2030.”
By that time, 50% of our planet's population will be living in coastal areas, exposed to flooding, storms, and tsunamis. We need to scale up international cooperation to developing countries to ensure that all communities within potential striking distance of tsunamis are prepared to withstand them. Only together can science, governments, businesses, and all of the rest of us achieve this lofty ambition. So, please, if you can, join one of the many in-person or virtual events being held around the world today in support of World Tsunami Awareness Day. ☮️ Peace… Jamiese of Pixoplanet
