. Yay it's #TechnologyThursday ! . Today is day 1 of the first online conference from @exarc.1 focusing on documentation strategies in archaeological open air museums. The conference was supposed to be held in Berlin, but what with the current pandemic, the organisers decided not to cancel it completely, but to try it online instead! . Each presentation is uploaded as a video to the EXARC YouTube channel, and people can then ask questions to the speakers or make comments in an online "discord" platform. This will also be turned into a virtual pub at the end of the day to allow for networking! . Exarc aren't the only organisation embracing the online world in this time of limited social interaction and travel restrictions. I haven't had time to check them out yet, but there are so many museums around the world who now offer virtual tours, as well as publishing companies that are providing free access to their material as a kind of online library. Even Keukenhof has an online tour! 🌷 . Although it is easy to focus on the negative at this crazy time, it is also important to look at the positives. After years of wondering whether academia should start becoming more environmentally friendly, for example by having more online conferences, we have more been forced to see if it could actually work. And indeed it does seem to. But it took a forced travel ban for it to be universally accepted as a possibility. . And that's just one benefit of all this! Has anyone else got another example?
