onewordtest1Ā replied to yourĀ post:Ā have you ever watched the revival after it came...
season 3 is probably one of my least watched seasons excluding s7. not cause I donāt think its good but literati actually dating isnt the funnest to watch? but the longer & longer I am a fan I think s1 & 2 are the strongest the show ever was.
Interesting! I used to definitively say season 3 was my favorite season, but I think itās because I was younger (closer to high school age) and a lot of the drama that year was around the younger generation, Lorelai and the others donāt have much to do in comparison (itās not a very good season for her parents, or Luke, or Sookie, etc. - thereās a lot of Rory/Jess/Dean/Lindsay/Lane/Dave/band stuff.) Now that Iām a bit older I find it all a bit boring/exhausting, and like you said, Literati dating wasnāt actually that interesting - maybe because the writers pretty much gave them nothing to do whilst together? Thatās all without the Francie subplot, which was just brutal.
I think there are strong episodes for sure, and strong moments, particularly for Milo/Jess as his life sort of breaks down, though Iād argue heās just as strong or stronger in season 4. Iām curious to see how Iāll feel about that season this time around - I really loved it a few years ago when I was just starting college, but being in another phase of my life I wonder if Iāll now find it kind of boring haha. I think youāre right, season 1 and 2 are probably the best in terms of quality.
onewordtest1 said: okay, why do you think Emily and Richard were overall seemingly more lenient and less critical with Rory (in early seasons) about some things you get the impression they would have been very harsh with Lorelai about. for example, I always found it funny when Emily decorates "Rory's room" at their house, she fills it with frivolous things and posters of boy bands and all this stuff when you kinda get the idea that (& sort of see it in the flashback episode) she would've never let that kind of decoration fly when Lorelai was a teenager living there
Ooh interesting. I absolutely love that scene/episode just because of all the subtext. I find it so interesting that like you said, in the beginning (especially season 1) Emily (and to some extent Richard) just seem so niceĀ to Rory that itās almost hard to understand how things could have gotten that bad between them and Lorelai when she was young. Whatās even more interesting is that I donāt necessarily think itās themĀ āgrowingā as in, them realizing how toxic the atmosphere they raised Lorelai in was and how they were unduly harsh on her and trying to do better, etc. I donāt think itās that at all, because they still clearly have so much anger and hurt towards Lorelai and they never seem to understand her motivations to leave.
Instead, I think a huge amount of it is who Rory is as a person. Sheās sweet, sheās polite, she wantsĀ to go to an Ivy League college. She does well in school, shows an interest in them and their way of life (to some extent) and is generally just less of a smart-ass. I think, after everything that happened with Lorelai, they donāt take Roryās presence in their lives for granted and Emily I think especially is constantly trying to figure out (superficial) ways she can bond with her, in a way that she maybe never even desired to with Lorelai (because their personalities so often clashed - or maybe because after all thatās happened, she really does just want to be a bit of a doting grandmother).
I wonder if also, to some extent, Emily kind of feels in competition with Lorelai for parenting Rory. She clearly envies their relationship and I think especially when things are so new in the first couple of seasons, goes above and beyond to try and form the kind of relationship with Rory that she feels Lorelai has, and I think sheās terrified of driving them both away (but especially Rory), so she tries so hard to be more lenient with her.Ā
This was such an interesting question! Iāve just been sitting here thinking about it for hours now lol. I want to know if anyone else has ideas about this because I feel like what I wrote was just a stream of consciousness and I donāt know if it really makes sense.
onewordtest1Ā replied to yourĀ post:Ā I feel sorry for all of the people who have...
I feel this way too when I see those strange people making posts about how Emily and Richard Never Did Anything Wrong and Lorelai is just a big meany to her obviously sweet and loving perfectly fine parents. Like ??? Do they think the way Emily and Richard treat Lorelai is normal/okay/healthy for parents to do? I figure yes because a toxic parenting culture is really pervasive in our society but yeesh. I love Emily and Richard but ⦠yeesh, again.
I agree. I think the main difference is that Lorelaiās relationship with her parents is presented as very complex in the show, whereas Dean is pretty much only presented in a positive light, no matter what he does. But yeah, when people somehow think Emily and Richard did no wrong and Lorelai is a horrible person I get so confused and concerned. Lorelai does not always treat them fairly but they are also very emotionally abusive to her at times, and especially when she was a kid/teen. I also love them (at least in the early seasons lol, before they basically become villains) but I feel like recognizing the complexity of their relationship is extremely important, and also like, kind of the point of the whole show...
onewordtest1Ā replied to yourĀ post:Ā I might not agree with everything you say but I do...
I feel like I imagined endings for GG so intensely for so long cause it never had an official ASP ending and always had the potential for one. But now itās happened. And it was terrible. lol so it is actually kinda freeing. I have just been enjoying the show so purely for what it is, not thinking about what if all the time as I watch it. Itās a subtle difference but a nice one.
Yes!! This is exactly how I feel! I have so many angsty diary entries from 2012 and gazillions of word documents re-imagining so many parts of the show because I felt like if only I could figure out the oneĀ thing that went wrong somewhere it would all end perfectly.Ā
After the revival I not only was likeĀ āwow, what a terrible endingā but also the thing I had wished more than anything for so many years - that Amy and Dan wouldāve been around for season 7 - would not have resulted in the perfect ending Iād imagined but actually a much worse oneĀ than what we got.
Like you said, now I just feel so free to love the good parts of the show and ignore the bad parts, instead of trying to figure out how it couldāve been āfixedā. I was worried the revival being so disappointing would take away my love for the show but actually it allowed me to love it in a totally different way.
(I will say though, for the most part, Iāve kinda been fed up/done with the fandom both on tumblr and pretty much everywhere else. Itās just the same three boring arguments happening over and over and itās exhausting and sucks out my joy haha. Itās honestly very freeing to feel like the show isĀ āmineā again, in a way, if that makes sense.)

I adore Sasha in every way T_T I canāt even make a more coherent meaningful statement, I am overwhelmed by my love for her lol. So it was nice to see an ask/discussion about her on my dash!
Yes, we should all just talk about Bunheads all the time!! Thatās really interesting...I was also a really late in the game Jess convert (and even now I find him kind of unbearable, if charming, in season 2 and much prefer him season 3 onwards), so I wonder if, with a few more watches, Iād feel similarly about Sasha? I definitely loved her a lot more this time around though.
onewordtest1Ā replied to yourĀ post:Ā In that list I see you didn't mention Lorelai's...
agreed. it wasnāt very good.
Glad Iām not alone. I mean just generally, in movies and TV shows Iām not really moved by scenes that are explicitly emotional like that. I always loved how Gilmore usually did more understated emotional stuff that was balanced out by humor. Of course, I did just take a Buzzfeed quiz that told me Iām 96% Grinch, so maybe that explains my aversion to it.
