Penitence
The price of confessing to your sins is more than memory loss.

When you first opened your eyes, you found yourself staring at a pair of red eyes.
They were attached to a face, a frown on their lips that softened when they noticed that you were awake. "You're alright... you're alright..." their voice was shaky as they spoke. It was obvious that they were saying that more to themselves rather than to you. It didn't take long for them to wrap their arms around you and bring you closer to them. You heard a 'thud' come from behind you as they hugged you tightly against them, preventing you from seeing whatever it was that was behind you.
You fainted again after that, which lead to the second time you opened your eyes.
This time, you were in a hospital of some kind, you liked to think so at least. You sat up on the bed you were lying on. It was odd, but you couldn't remember anything. Well, you could remember some important details and your childhood but everything else was a huge blank. What even happened for you to forget a majority of your life?
You rubbed your temple. Not knowing a majority of your past was frustrating but there was nothing you could do. You should stick to whatever your doctor tells you to do for now.
You heard a groan and then felt your white bed sheets shuffle. "You're awake...?" the person whose presence you didn't notice mumbled. You looked at her, your heart skipping a beat when you saw her. Long, messy black hair that easily reached the floor and red eyes that reminded you of rubies.
"I'm awake," you told her. You don't know why but just looking at her made you feel giddy. She wasn't someone that you recognized either, so why were you feeling this way?
She froze, her ruby eyes lazily gazing into yours before she suddenly stood up from the stool she was previously sitting on. "Shit, I'll go get the doctor!" she shouted before running off.
—
Days passed and you learned what was going on.
The doctor that the ruby-eyed woman brought you explained what happened to you, sure, but the rest you only learned after spending a few days in this weird place. The doctor told you that the reason for your memory loss was because of an abnormality — though he didn't bother saying which abnormality it was — and that since you were physically fine, you'd return to work soon. Return to work as a "fresh new" agent to be exact.
On your "first" day of work, a lot of people who you didn't know came up to you. Some of them were sad, some of them angry, some happy and a few curious. You were overwhelmed by the number of people surrounding you but thankfully that ruby-eyed woman came to your rescue. She hastily sent them away before apologizing to you. She informed you that before you lost your memories, you used to be quite popular among your peers and apologized again for not informing you of this.
After that, your shift started and the ruby-eyed woman — whose name you later learned to be Micaela — informed you what your job was. You would be tasked by the manager to do one of four works with each work having a different requirement. She also added that sometimes, for some abnormalities, two different works — attachment and instinct for example — could require you to do the same thing. It was a little complicated but you think you understood, you hoped you did.
Your first task was to work on an abnormality named "One Sin and Hundreds of Good Deeds". Micaela frowned when she saw the name of the abnormality but when you asked her about it, she told you not to worry and that he was a zayin, one of the few and safest abnormalities in the facility all with that displeased frown on her face. She also said that she would be coming with you in case you needed guidance.
You weren't a fool though, you knew that she was accompanying you because she didn't trust this "One Sin" abnormality. It was odd, seeing someone like her worrying about a peaceful abnormality certainly didn't make you feel safe but there was nothing you could do about it.
But when the time to work on the abnormality came, it went nothing like you thought it would.
The abnormality himself was not what you were expecting.
Despite Micaela's glare at him, he did not seem bothered. His eyes were closed and he stood still, akin to a statue. You actually thought he was a statue at first if it weren't for the way his body tensed when he saw you. He was a zayin but with the way he was acting, plus Micaela's treatment of him so far, you had an inkling that he was related to your memory loss.
The first couple of minutes you spent were waiting for him to do something, anything. The next minute, you realized that he wasn't going to do anything for some reason and the minute after that, you realized that you should start doing your work or you would be here for a while. So, that's what you did. Micaela helped you a little, too, muttering about how you needed her help at the moment. You initially thought that she was scary — especially the moment where she chased all those other agents away from you — but now you knew that she was a nice person all around. You were glad that you had someone like her by your side.
Unfortunately, as soon as your work with One Sin came to an end and the two of you left his unit, you learned that Micaela was avoiding her work just so she could make sure that you were doing alright. As a result, she was chased away — by a department head of all people — and you were left alone, by yourself.
You don't know why, but the moment she left your side, you felt empty. Maybe it was because you got used to her presence or maybe it was caused by something else. Whatever it was, you weren't given much time to deal with it because you were sent right back to work on One Sin. A decision that you wanted to resist but chose not to. What would you even change by resisting? What would she think if she saw that you didn't want to work because you weren't by her side? Nothing good, you figured that much, so you entered One Sin's unit without wasting another moment.
And that was when he finally did — or said — something.
"...I never thought I'd see you again," he spoke, voice quiet and cold.
You didn't know what to make of his words. On one hand, his cold voice was proof enough that Micaela didn't trust him for a good reason, but on the other, what could you have possibly done to get one of the safest abnormalities in the facility to be so distant? And it was obvious that when he said that, he clearly meant the event related to your memory loss and not related to how well of a job you did during your previous work.
"Do you... do you know what happened to me?" you asked, hopeful of getting this whole memory loss issue out of the way and going back to living how you normally did.
But he didn't answer.
And you could do absolutely nothing about it. Nothing aside from getting your work with him done, wondering just how bad you messed up before losing your memory.
—
As more days went by, you slowly became strong enough to take care of more abnormalities. Nothing too dangerous, of course, maybe a He abnormality at most as you were still too weak for an Aleph. Still, that didn't change the reality of the abnormalities being stronger and more dangerous than the previous ones, but you'd rather die working on them than go see One Sin again. Whenever you were in his unit, it felt like you weren't supposed to be alive but rather dead. It wasn't a feeling that you liked thus you dreaded going back into his unit.
On the other hand, not being with Micaela also made you feel horrible. Horrible in the sense of being anxious. Anxious about what? You didn't know and you don't know if you wanted to know the answer either. But regardless of whether you wanted to or not, you knew that the answer would come to you the moment you got your memories back.
There was no use in dwelling on those feelings though. Micaela was by your side a majority of the time and One Sin was stuck inside his unit, away from you. The new abnormalities that you've been working on so far have been eccentric each in their own way but they also seemed to know you, in a way. Their feelings weren't like the ones the other agents had regarding you and they were much less obvious as well. You couldn't be sure whether their feelings for you were positive or negative but you didn't care, there was no need to.
As far as you were concerned, you were happy with how things were going.
The place you were working for — L. Corp, if you remembered correctly — was dangerous, you knew that, but it never stopped you from feeling content. Actually, you're not sure if content is the right word to describe your feelings when it felt like a major part of you was missing and you were prone to anxiety the moment Micaela left your side. Something was wrong with you and you couldn't continue to just let it eat you up while you pretended that everything was okay.
So that was when you decided to take matters into your own hands. The company wasn't helping you regain your lost memories and Micaela seemed reluctant to tell you any memories she shared with you. So, you did the first thing that came to mind and confronted her about it.
"So, about my memories," you began, watching from the corner of your eyes how she froze for a brief second before continuing to go through the drawers in her room. "Why don't you want to tell me about what kind of relationship we had? Or the moments we shared?"
"I told you," she said as she closed the last drawer, an unsatisfied look on her face as she turned to face you. It was obvious to you that she didn't find whatever she was searching for in there. "I don't want to force anything on you. I'd rather you remember something first and then ask me about it, no matter how small, but you're just... not remembering things and I don't know if that's supposed to happen or not."
You frowned, she's given this exact and stupid excuse so many times and you were beginning to get tired of hearing it. "How is saying what our relationship was in the past forcing something on me? You could be my sister—"
"Absolutely not!" she suddenly yelled before immediately covering her mouth, an apologetic look in her eyes. "Shit, sorry, didn't mean to yell at you like that."
"It's alright," you told her. Did she have a bad relationship with a sibling or was it something else that got her so riled up? "If you're not my sister, then what are you to me?"
"I'm your..." her voice quietened, "friend," she reluctantly finished. With the way she said it, you're not sure if she actually considered you her friend.
"Alright then," you sighed. You don't think that you'll get anywhere by continuing this. "Then, in order to recover my memories, why don't we ask an abnormality for help?"
"Ex-fucking-cuse me?"
Micaela didn't sound too pleased at your suggestion.
"You heard me," you crossed your arms over your chest.
"Absolutely not! I won't allow it!"
"Why not? If it was an abnormality that took my memories away then I'm sure that an abnormality can return them as well."
"It's dangerous! Who knows what could happen to you if something went wrong?!" she protested, placing her hands on your shoulder as she looked into your eyes. "I can't lose you, not again."
Maybe it's just you but this didn't exactly sound like something someone would say to their friend. Still, she had a point. You'd be in grave danger if something went wrong and you're not sure if you can handle another memory loss. Even so, you wanted to know who you were.
"I know it's dangerous but I'd rather die knowing who I was instead of continuing to live like this, unaware of who I really am," you told her.
Following your response, her hold on your shoulder tightened just by a little. Not enough to hurt you but enough to let you know that what you said affected her in some way. "I don't—"
"Mica," the nickname unintentionally left your lips, causing the woman in front of you to freeze. You didn't mean to call her that nor did you mean to give her a nickname. It was accidental but it worked in your favour nevertheless. "Please," your voice was shaky enough to thaw Micaela out of whatever stupor she was in just now.
Before you knew it, you were wrapped in her arms as she held you close to her, a hand placed on the back of your head while an arm was hooked around your waist. Strangely enough, this position felt familiar to you.
"Okay," she murmured. She sounded happy yet sad at the same time. "I'll allow it. I won't be happy about it but I will allow it."
"Thank you!" you shouted, returning her hug.
"Don't thank me, I'm mad."
"But—"
"Shut up before I change my mind."
"Yes ma'am."
You don't know why but you think you felt her die inside when you referred to her as "ma'am", must be your imagination.
—
The next day, Mica didn't allow you to leave her side. She followed you to your work and refused to do hers until someone threatened her to, which brought you to now.
"Listen to me carefully," she started, her hand clutching yours, "there's only one abnormality that I can think of who can bring your memories back but..."
"But?"
"He's an asshole!" she hissed, glaring into nothing. "And he's the reason why you're like this in the first place! I swear, if he didn't have so much power in the first place then I would've killed him a hundred times and over!"
"Then he's the one who caused my memory loss...?" you muttered to yourself.
"Not exactly," she grumpily mumbled. "He didn't cause your memory loss but he sure as hell is the reason why it happened!"
He didn't cause it but he was the reason for it? You didn't understand, how could he be the reason for your memory loss but not the cause of it? The best explanation that you could come up with was that it was a curse of some kind. A curse that was so severe that you needed to be rid of your memories in order to get rid of it. If that was the case, then should you even be getting your memories back? There was always the chance that the curse returned and you'd have to lose your memories again, creating a vicious cycle that you would never be able to break free from.
Were you okay with that?
Were you okay with living in a vicious cycle or dying a painful death caused by whatever curse you had?
If the answer to those questions were yes, then were you okay with not knowing who you were? Were you going to be okay with not remembering anything from your past?
The answer was no. You'd rather die knowing who you were than continue living on with no clue about your past and who you were as a person.
"It's fine," you eventually spoke, interrupting the angry spiel that Mica went on.
"Fine...?" she muttered, looking at you with worry evident in her eyes. "Are you sure?"
"I'm sure," you nodded. "Even if I get hurt in the process, I want to know who I used to be."
Mica stayed silent for a minute before speaking. "You won't get hurt, not when you're with me, so don't talk like that."
"I know you won't let me get hurt," you said with a smile. "You're always like this, it would be weird if I did get hurt."
"...Always like this..." she softly murmured to herself before shaking her head. "Well, if you're ready then we should go see him now. We don't want to keep him waiting for too long."
"Right, I'm ready."
"Alright then," her hold on your hand tightened before she led you away from the main room the two of you were in and into a hallway. Her steps were steady as she led you through the grey hallway, eyes focusing on a door right at the end. She looked so brave even though you could feel her hand tremble more and more the closer you got to the unit in question.
"We're here," she spoke, standing in front of the unit's door. "Stay close," she added before opening it and entering the unit together with you.
"You're awfully late," the voice of the abnormality caused a knot to form in your stomach. Something about this abnormality was both alien and familiar to you but you didn't know what. You huddled closer to Mica when you felt the abnormality's attention turn to you. "Oh, and you brought them with you as well, how lovely."
You didn't like the way he said lovely.
Mica brought your body even closer to hers. "If you try anything, I'll kill you," she spoke, her voice loud and vindictive. You never thought that someone like Mica would be able to sound so aggressive.
"Try anything? Why would I ever want to hurt my favourite, Micaela? That's rather counterintuitive, is it not?"
Favourite...? Not to mention that he knows Mica's name, too.
Regardless, you can't keep hiding from the abnormality any longer. If you wanted your memories back, then you'd have to confront him sooner or later and you preferred sooner. "It's fine, Mica," you said softly before separating yourself from her, albeit hesitantly.
"Oh, so they speak," the abnormality chuckled. You looked at him, your breath hitching as you did. In front of you stood a short man with long white hair and crimson-red eyes. He was wearing an ancient white cloth of some kind and there were multiple pairs of white wings coming out of his back. There were golden chains attached to his body, the most noticeable one being the golden collar on his neck and there was a golden crown right above his head. He was handsome, but something about him was terrifying.
The smile on his lips widened when he noticed that you were looking at him. "Oh, it's been so long since I looked my cute little sheep in the eyes! I missed you so so much."
Cute little sheep? That's... ew.
"Don't call them by that disgusting nickname," Mica growled, pulling your body closer to hers again. This time, you didn't move away.
"Disgusting? I'm sure that everyone would find their nickname cute instead of disgusting."
"I don't. It's disgusting and that's final."
The abnormality frowned and you knew then and there that you had to do something about this soon or you risked the chance to get your memories back.
"I like my nickname," you lied, causing Mica to look at you with shock and the abnormality to look at you with glee.
"No, you don't," Mica muttered, bewildered. "There's no way you do."
Before you could reply, you were ripped out of her arms and brought into another pair that wrapped around your form tightly. It wasn't long before someone — obviously the abnormality — rubbed his cheek against yours. "I haven't heard you lie for my sake for so long. I suppose it's a gift to see you do that again. What shall I reward you with, hmm? Maybe another kiss will do?"
Another kiss? Wait, have you been with this guy before? If you have, then why? Shouldn't relationships between abnormalities and agents be forbidden? Not only was the dynamic rather unhealthy but it'd cause a whole bunch of issues for the facility as well. Not to mention that you were under the impression that you and Mica used to be... well...
"DON'T YOU DARE!" Mica shouted, scaring you. Her face was red with anger, her pinpoint pupils glaring at the abnormality. This couldn't be good. You don't want her to anger this... this freaky angel abnormality, you doubted that anything good would come out of something like that.
So right as the abnormality opened his mouth, you spoke.
"Uhm, who are you?"
It was a simple question but it was enough to get his attention back on you and away from Mica.
"Who are you?" the abnormality mimicked your question, tilting his head as he did. "Who are you?" he muttered, his crimson red eyes silently staring into yours. "...I see. I shouldn't have expected you to have your memories considering what you did."
It wasn't long before he let you go and Mica took that opportunity to snatch you back to her side, pushing you behind her and hiding your frame with her body. "I'm surprised that you aren't holding a grudge," she said bitterly.
"What they did broke my heart but that doesn't mean that I hate them."
"Yeah, right. You don't even have a heart that they could break, you're just using them to get to One Sin, aren't you?"
One Sin? Why did Mica mention him? What did he have to do with any of this?
Wait a second, Mica said that while the abnormality in front of you right now was the reason why your memory loss happened, he wasn't the cause of it. If he wasn't the cause and he was mentioning One Sin, then what were the chances of One Sin causing your memory loss? It'd certainly explain why he was mean whenever you were working on him and it would also explain why Mica didn't like him.
"I still don't know who he is," you muttered. As much as you didn't want to, you'd have to talk with One Sin about this as well and knowing this abnormality's name would help out a lot.
"You may simply refer to me as WhiteNight, my cute little sheep," the abnormality, WhiteNight, cooed.
"Stop calling them by that creepy nickname!"
"A mere mortal like you does not get to dictate how I should act."
"YOU—"
You covered Mica's hand with your hand, muffling the strings of curses that were coming out of her mouth. It was obvious that WhiteNight was saying things just to get under Mica's skin, your weird nickname being one of them. It wouldn't do you or her any good if you let him get to her.
"Mica," you said as you slowly removed your hand from her mouth. She turned to look at you, the harshness in her eyes softening as soon as they landed on you. "Remember why you brought me here?"
While you could still see her body tremble ever so slightly, she was significantly calmer than she was a moment ago. "Right," she nodded. "Sorry," she apologized.
"It's fine. Just, let me take the lead okay?"
"Alright..."
You gave her a smile before looking at WhiteNight. "Is there a chance I could regain my memories?"
"Is there a reason why you want your memories back?"
He didn't deny it so it might be possible after all. "I want to know the kind of person I was before all this," you answered.
"Does knowing that really matter? You will never be the person you used to be so it's best for your sake that you stop trying. Though I suppose I should tell you that you'll always have a place beside me."
You don't know if he was trying to insult you or comfort you about your memory loss.
"Just say that you can't bring their memories back instead of whatever it is you're trying to do," Mica spoke.
"He can't bring my memories back?"
"I thought he could, but..." Mica bit her lips, "with how he answered your question, he definitely can't."
"Unfortunately, I can't," WhiteNight said, his voice void of any emotion. "The only one who can undo it is that priest-wanna-be," he looked at you with a grin, "it's a shame he doesn't like you though. That's why I said you'll always have a place beside me."
"I—"
"That's enough," Mica spoke up before grabbing your hand and dragging you out of WhiteNight's unit. "Thanks for nothing."
You frowned, not pleased with the way that Mica ended the conversation. You could've gotten more information if it weren't for this but oh well, better luck next time.
Right as the door to the unit closed, you heard WhiteNight speak again. "Don't look so distressed, we're bound to meet again whether you like it or not."
Bound to meet again? But there was no way for the two of you to meet again since you doubted you'd be sent to work on an abnormality of his calibre, you did not doubt that he was a dangerous abnormality. So, that left only one option for the two of you to meet which involved him escaping.
"What is his risk tier?" you asked.
"Aleph," Mica answered curtly.
Aleph? You were expecting a Waw since Mica did bring you here, albeit hesitantly, but you shouldn't be surprised since she was pretty strong and it was only natural that she worked on the strongest abnormalities. "I see."
Right now, you should go see One Sin and talk with him. He was the key to getting your memories back, after all.
—
It took a while for you to be assigned to work on One Sin again. And by a while, you meant days. Maybe not even days, but weeks.
You were sent to work on stronger, more dangerous abnormalities instead of the safer ones. At one point, you were even sent to work on another aleph, one that was made out of pink slime. Her presence was nice — much to your surprise, she was an aleph after all — but you didn't work on her too long as you were only a substitute for another agent.
Working on abnormalities you've never seen before was nice but you'd prefer to get your memories back. For a moment, you wondered if a higher-up was assigning you to stronger abnormalities just to make sure you didn't get your memories back but you doubted it. You weren't the only one who began working on more dangerous alephs, the new agents were doing it, too. It was safe to conclude that you weren't being singled out, much to your relief.
And then, you were finally sent to work on One Sin.
You almost wished you weren't, not with the way he was looking at you.
"You went back to him, didn't you?" he asked bitterly. His eyes were open, revealing the cold abyss hidden inside them that was glaring into your soul right at this very moment. "Despite what he did to you, you still went back to him."
And then, he started chuckling, almost as if this entire situation was a joke to him. "Hah, I really shouldn't be surprised about this."
Was he talking about WhiteNight?
"What he did to me? What are you saying? You're the one who caused my memory loss so I should be staying away from you instead of whoever you're talking about."
"I wouldn't have taken away your memories if you never committed the gravest sin."
Gravest sin...? "What... did I do?"
"You made a deal with the devil," One Sin explained. "And now, you've run back into his arms without batting an eye."
"I... I wouldn't have done that if I had my memories!" you shouted in an attempt to defend yourself.
"You weren't meant to live for long after losing them in the first place," he explained.
"I... wasn't meant to..."
"That's enough of that. Get out of my sight."
You opened your mouth to protest but closed it. It wouldn't do you any good to force the conversation to continue when the abnormality simply didn't like you. He might be a zayin but you weren't going to risk losing your memories again. Looks like you weren't going to get any of your memories back.
"Sorry," you muttered before leaving his unit. There's no need to linger in there and there certainly wasn't any reason for you to go back, you didn't get along with the abnormality nor were you going to get your memories back. It sucked but there wasn't anything you could do about it.
"There you are!" you heard Mica shout after you left One Sin's unit and before you knew it, you were engulfed in her arms. "I was worried when you stayed in there for longer than usual. He didn't do anything to you, did he? I certainly hope he didn't cause another memory loss... for his sake, that is."
Memory loss... How come Mica only mentioned that but not his awful attitude? Could it be that he only acted his way towards you? If so, why? Was it because of the "gravest sin" he mentioned?
"He said that I sinned and that's why he took my memories," you told her.
"You sinned?" Mica blinked, confusion painted all over her face. "Sinned?" she said as she squinted her eyes, looking up and down your body before realization dawned on her. "Ahh, he means that."
"That?" you repeated.
"The sin he mentioned is you kissing WhiteNight."
"I did what?"
"You kissed WhiteNight, you were the twelfth agent to do so."
You frowned. "Why would I kiss WhiteNight when I have you?"
"You're so sweet," Mica shook her head with a smile. "It almost makes me want to not tell you why he kissed you."
"Tell me."
"It was some kind of power play between him and One Sin."
A power play?
"You shouldn't trust either of them for any reason. One will lie to your face and manipulate you just so he can get a boost to his ego while the other won't hesitate to destroy your memories just because you interacted with the former," she added.
"That sounds messy," you said to yourself.
"Oh, just wait until you meet Red and the wolf. Or better yet, the fishes."
"The fishes?"
"Don't worry about them," Mica shook her head again. She separated her body from yours before she grabbed your hand and lead you somewhere else. "All of this memory stuff is clearly too much for you right now, you need to rest. And, there's no need you to come in tomorrow either, just make sure that you get a day off and have time to yourself."
That sounded nice. Having a day to yourself seemed like a good idea, especially when someone told you that you weren't supposed to live for long.
"Thank you, Mica."
"No problem."
—
It was a good thing that Mica was working right now, you didn't want her to see you cuddling her pillow.
Her bed — as well as her dorm room — was strangely comforting, so much so that the anxious and horrible feeling you got when you were away from her was non-existent. It was a miracle that she let you sleep in her room in her bed but the price for that was that Mica got to sleep in your room in your bed. You had an inkling that she was actually planning to do something like this but you didn't mind. If she wanted to stay in your room, then she was more than welcome to do so.
You brought her pillow closer to you. Why did she have to have the fluffiest pillow you've ever seen? It wasn't fair. If it weren't for your morals, then you would've stolen this and switched it with your own pillow. Mica would obviously notice since your pillow wasn't as fluffy as hers so the pillow thievery could happen some other day.
Speaking of, when was Mica going to come back?
Your mind was focused on the day off you would be getting and failed to realize that you didn't exactly have anything to do on that day off. You didn't mind continuing to cuddle Mica's pillow and drift off to sleep in a comfortable position but you worried about what Mica would do if she saw you like that. You don't think that it could be anything good but it wasn't like Mica made you feel bad for anything so maybe not?
Still, doing something like that felt like something only official couples would do and you're not exactly sure if the two of you were official or not. You'd have to ask to find out but she'd probably give you that stupid answer of hers so you didn't see the point of asking.
The only way to find out was if you slept in her bed so you were going to do just that.
But right as you were about to close your eyes, you heard a siren go off in the distance. The third trumpet, to be specific. Maybe it was because of your boredom but wasn't it too early for an emergency? It was barely dawn and you could easily hear the third trumpet, not to mention that the third trumpet was reserved for situations where the facility was in danger only.
Wait, didn't that mean Mica was in danger, too?
You cursed silently before immediately getting up from her bed and hastily leaving her room, making sure to grab your ego weapon first. While you weren't as strong as she was and doubted if you could even save yourself when the time came, you weren't going to be selfish and abandon her, not when she did so much for you.
Before long, you found yourself in the department that Mica was assigned to, the record department. She wasn't there though, you couldn't find her no matter how much you looked around the department.
Why wasn't she... where could she even be? Suppressing an abnormality? Then where was the abnormality? Having a map would've helped you greatly right now, too bad you were in a rush and only grabbed your ego weapon.
Right as you were about to leave the record department, you saw a bright red light quickly approach and pass through you. You haven't seen anything like that before but you knew that it was from an abnormality, it had to be. You don't know if Mica was suppressing the abnormality that caused the red light but it wasn't like you had any other leads. The light came from one of the floors above, either the central command or disciplinary department with the angle it approached you.
—
The central command department was completely empty save for a few lanky white skeletons that roamed in there. You didn't know what abnormalities they were but they didn't attack you, they just ignored you as they wandered through the department. It was weird and you wondered if you should've suppressed them but they were pretty much harmless so you continued searching for Mica.
The disciplinary department, on the other hand, had an abnormality you recognized inside the main room, waiting for you.
"Oh my, I didn't think that you would ever show up," WhiteNight said with a smile. "And you haven't transformed either. Good. I don't think I would be too pleased if you betrayed me again."
"Betray you?" you repeated. Betray him how? Actually, whatever you did didn't matter, you had to find Mica first! "Nevermind, where's Mica?" you asked, not expecting an answer since how would an abnormality know of her location?
"You're looking for that mortal, are you?" he hummed. "You should stop searching in that case, you won't find her."
Seeing you frown, he continued. "Who do you think took your place? Surely you didn't think that the number of apostles would be lowered because you decided to not come into work?"
"Took my place? What do you mean she took my place?" you asked, your voice louder than you intended it to be. You were getting a bad feeling from this entire situation.
"Easy," WhiteNight chuckled, "instead of you being the one confessing your sins and dying, she will do it in your place."
But that's...
"You're lying! There's no reason for Mica to sacrifice herself when I didn't even go to work today! There was no need to!"
"There wasn't a reason for her to sacrifice herself, that's right," you didn't like the way his smile widened as he spoke. "It's too bad that the manager sent her to her death. I was more than willing to let the two of you stay together for however long you liked, it's such a shame that the manager wasn't of the same opinion."
The manager...? Wasn't he the one who assigned tasks to the agents? Why would the manager send Mica to her death when she was one of his best agents? It didn't make sense, it didn't make any sense!
"But the manager isn't the only one with a hand in her sacrifice, that priest will be the one to kill her. Unfortunately, as powerful as I am, I cannot stop that from happening. A big shame, is it not?"
That priest... Did he mean One Sin? But why would he kill her? Wasn't his problem with you? And the manager as well, why would he knowingly send one of the best employees to her death?
"Why...?"
"The why doesn't matter, what matters is that the person you trusted the most sent your beloved to her death. You can't trust him anymore, no? I'm the only one you can trust."
He didn't answer your question and told you that he was the only one that you could trust. Mica was right, he didn't hesitate to lie to your face and try to manipulate you. Not that you doubted her in the first place.
"I don't know what you're trying to achieve by lying to me but it's not working," you glared at him. "You're the one that chose to transform her into one of your apostles because I wasn't present. You're just as guilty as the manager and One Sin in that regard."
The smile on his face instantly vanished and he stared at you with a blank expression. Right as you began to worry about what he was going to do to you, he began to laugh.
"Despite your memory loss, you're still as clever as ever! I shouldn't have been surprised and yet I was, this is why you're my favourite."
You didn't like the way he was smiling at you. "You can say that I'm your favourite all you want, that won't make me like you."
"On the other hand, you'll soon realize that I'm the only one willing to be by your side when all of this is over."
"That's not true!" you protested. "Mica is—"
"That woman is dead," WhiteNight interrupted you with a cold look in his eyes.
"I doubt she is," you replied bitterly. "If she took my place as an apostle then that would mean that her sacrifice would've affected you in some way but nothing has happened so far. If you're fine, then she is alive and well! She isn't dead!"
"She is," a new voice spoke, pulling you against their chest before covering your eyes with a hand. "She is dead because of the devil standing in front of you and yet you converse with him as if he's done nothing wrong."
That was One Sin's voice! But, why was he treating you as if you didn't know what WhiteNight did? "I'm not—"
"I don't want to hear another word from you," he hissed, the hand covering your eyes sliding down and covering your mouth instead
"Don't you dare treat them like that," WhiteNight spoke, his crimson red eyes glaring at the abnormality behind you.
One Sin clicked his tongue. "You don't get to tell me what to do when you've overstayed your welcome. Do us a favour and get out of my sight."
Within seconds, a blinding light filled the main room of the disciplinary department. "You— You'll pay for this!" WhiteNight yelled as his skin slowly started burning as more light shined on him. "I'll come back, and you'll regret this when I do!" he shouted shortly before his skin began bleeding and before you knew it, he was gone with his blood covering the walls.
One Sin removed his hand from your mouth and then turned you around so that you were facing him. "You want your memories back? Fine, you can have them."
Before you could ask what he meant, his lips came crashing down onto yours and your memories came flooding back. Memories of the time you spent in this facility, of your friends, of Micaela, of the abnormalities you befriended, of the time you spent with One Sin and how it all came to an end. Memories that you almost wished you didn't remember considering the situation you were in.
When One Sin's lips left yours, you pushed him away. "Why— Why did you—"
"You wanted your memories back, didn't you?" he scowled. "I returned them, you don't need to make a big deal out of this."
He was acting pretty hostile for someone who just kissed you. "No, why? Why are you treating me like this when we used to be friends?"
You didn't understand. He was always by your side the moment you met him, giving you advice and guiding you onto the right path with a warm smile on his face. Through thick and thin, he made sure to remind you that you were always welcome to stay in his unit and he was the one who encouraged you to confess your feelings to Mica. Mica, who was currently...
"Is it not obvious? You betrayed me and I treated you accordingly, we aren't friends after what you did. You should be glad that I even decided to help you out in the first place."
You should be glad? As if.
"Then why did you kiss me? I'm not dumb, you didn't need to kiss me in order to return my memories, you did that because you wanted to. So tell me, why did you treat me so horribly and then decide that kissing me was okay?"
He stayed silent which angered you even more. "You knew that Mica was my girlfriend and yet you—"
"That woman is dead, you don't have a relationship with her anymore," he growled, placing his hands on the sides of your head, his nails digging into your skin as you glared at him. "Look at me, I'm alive and well. There's no need for you to continue sinning for that corpse's sake anymore."
"You're delusional if you think I'll like you after everything you did," you glowered.
He frowned. "In that case, I'll take back the memories that you craved oh-so-much. You'll see in time that I'm doing this for your sake."
"You won't be able to hide the truth from me for too long. I'll make you regret doing all of this."
For the first time in a while, you saw One Sin smile, a smile that mocked your very existence.
"We'll see about that."
