One Headlight - The Wallflowers
One Headlight - The Wallflowers (1996)
Motivational Music in the Morning ... The Wallflowers, One Headlight (Lyrics) ... from the Album: Bringing Down the Horses (1996)
#MMitM1
[What the Song is About: Jakob Dylan (the Son of Bob Dylan) has stated the song is about “the death of ideas.” He wrote it during a low point — the band’s debut album had been a commercial disappointment, and he was feeling defeated. The lyrics deal with themes of loss, longing, grief, and searching for meaning. The imagery of driving with one headlight symbolizes moving forward in a state of vulnerability or brokenness — not fully equipped but still going. Some lyrics were inspired by Bruce Springsteen’s “Independence Day” and “One Step Up.”]
Success & Legacy It was a massive radio hit, spending 70 weeks on the Billboard Hot 100 Airplay chart and becoming the first song to simultaneously top all three of Billboard’s rock airplay charts (Modern Rock, Mainstream Rock, and Triple-A). It won two Grammy Awards at the 40th Annual Grammys — Best Rock Song and Best Rock Performance by a Duo or Group. Rolling Stone ranked it #58 on their list of the 100 Greatest Pop Songs, and Billboard named it the greatest Adult Alternative song of all time.

Can I drive with one headlight?
In most jurisdictions, driving with one headlight is generally illegal, but the specific circumstances depend on local laws and the circumstances. Here are some key considerations:
1. Legal Requirements
Most US states (e.g., Texas, California):
Nighttime: Vehicles must have two functioning headlights. Driving with one headlight after dark is illegal and may result in a ticket.
Daytime: Some states (e.g., Texas) allow the use of one headlight when visibility is adequate, but other states require both headlights to be used at all times.
Motorcycles: Headlights are generally required to be used day and night, even if only one headlight is used.
2. Safety Risks
Reduced Visibility: One headlight limits your ability to see and be seen, increasing your risk of collision, especially at night or in inclement weather.
Misjudgment by Others: Drivers may mistake your vehicle for a motorcycle, leading to lane sharing or improper turns.
Legal Penalties: Even if daytime driving is permitted, the police may still issue a warning or ticket for what you consider a safety violation.
3. Exceptions and Gray Areas
Temporary Repairs: Some states allow driving with one headlight for a short period of time while en route to a repair shop (bring proof of your appointment).
Farm/off-road vehicles: Some areas are exempt from standard headlight regulations.
4. What to Do If One Headlight Is Out
Check Local Laws: Verify your state/country's headlight regulations (e.g., Texas Traffic Code).
Prioritize Repairs: Replace the bulb immediately. For most vehicles, this can be done on your own.
Use Alternative Lighting: If you break down, turn on your hazard lights and park the vehicle in a safe location until repairs are complete.
Penalties Violations Potential Consequences Driving with one light at night Fine ($50 to $200), court costs Accidents due to poor visibility Liability for damages, higher insurance rates
Final Advice While driving with one light is technically permitted in certain daytime scenarios, it is dangerous and often illegal. Replace bulbs promptly based on guidelines such as a web search or contact a mechanic. For safety and compliance, always make sure both headlights are functioning properly.
Maura gripped the handlebars tighter. "Hang on!" she yelled, not bothering to look over at a very pregnant Jane in her sidecar.
She hit the throttle and they skidded over the uneven pavement. The bombs had been brutal in Boston, but up this close to Canada the roads had been torn up by mines, exploding the ground from underneath rather than leaving from above. Maura had become proficient in all terrains. Maura had learned to spot the mines, and she veered to the left, hearing Jane curse. She spared her a glance in the mirror; Jane's scarred hands gripped the chassis tightly and Maura accelerated. They'd found supplies in the abandoned gas station, but someone else had found them. Maura didn't want to end up as someone else's supplies so here they were, speeding through the dark night with one headlight.
They outpaced their followers easily and Maura pulled over down the road. She dismounted on shaking legs and helped Jane to her feet, her pregnant belly brushing Maura. There was no space between them.
"You're okay?" It was always Jane's first question, even as she chewed half an energy bar, shoving the rest into Maura's mouth before she could answer. She uncapped a water bottle - they'd been very, very lucky today - and drank before holding it to Maura's mouth, who obediently drank as Jane steadied her. She'd thought she was past all the feat and adrenaline. Jane finished the water, holstered her gun and reached for Maura. They'd been through this before, the late night raids, being targets. Maura's feet scuffed the glass glittering on the asphalt in their Timberlands she'd picked up from an abandoned outlet mall somewhere along the way. She felt so short and helpless. She was wearing Levis and leather, just like Jane. It looked good on Jane.
Maura nodded numbly, letting Jane tilt her chin so she could look Maura in the eye, to check for herself. Maura never lied, but she did the best she could.
"As okay as anyone could be." Jane nodded and released Maura's chin. "We have to get you somewhere safe soon. That baby's not going to wait much longer."
"Honey," Jane said, her voice low and soft, almost condescending. "I don't think there's anywhere safe left in the world."
But Jane was wrong, because when Jane's arms wrapped around her, it was the safest Maura had ever felt.
