The title of this essay should disturb you. We have been brought up to believe that tolerating other people is one of the things you do if…
I’d also venture that most of the principles behind morality are foundations of a peaceful, harmonious and just society, which in turn is necessary for our safety, longevity and of course, happiness.
Without honesty, you don’t have trust.
Without trust, you don’t have relationships.
And without relationships, you don’t have a society.
Without society, there is no one to protect you when you are cold and without sustenance, no one to provide insights, invent things, and brings advances when your own brain is not working and no one to fight with you when you are standing against the rest of the world.
Society (and its people) needs compassion and kindness to care for its weak both because today’s weak may become tomorrow’s caretakers and because today’s caretakers may become tomorrow’s weak.
Violence is bad because it doesn’t work most of the time and all it leads to is survival of the strongest, who may not be the fittest or the most intelligent. Violence is also a breach of trust and thus could shake the foundations of society.
Actions/beliefs predicated in reason is important because without it, our society cannot advance and without advancement, we as a species may end.
If you think of morality as a foundation for society (same as peace treaty I suppose), then you could also see (from the example in the above article), why a people with a different set of moral foundations, that are completely incompatible with ours, might exist (those who consider gay people as sin or premarital sex as worthy of capital offense). Of course, as the author says, in such a situation, resistance becomes our only option until it comes to live and let live.
On Tolerance, or: how does one limit the unlimited?
Behind a read more because of its length, and because of its essence as word-vomit.
