Prompt #14: Attrition
((In which the writer learns thereâs a theological definition, pertaining to Contrition, and also maybe riffed off The Decemberists a little cuz rhymes are hard and who has time for that. Now on Ao3))
The sound of heavy footsteps from the hall outside Howartâs chamber made him look up from his reading and realize how very late it was. The candle burned low as the stars outside the window glimmered in the pitch sky.
Perhaps the visiting Inquisitor required something; in which case, Howart had best check. The Inquisitor had been forgiving so far of Howartâs youth and inexperience in his assistant position to the elder priest of this parish. Yet he had also made it clear he expected Howart to learn, quickly, how to anticipate his needs.
Howart shoved his feet into boots and threw on his robe, adjusting it as he hurried out the door.
There was no one in the short corridor, but dim lights flickered in the sanctuary. Howart hurried that way. âSir, is there aught thatâOh!â
It was not the Inquisitor standing before the altar of Halone. A tall elezen man in dark armor slowly turned to look at Howart. A fit elder, his hair was all iron gray, and his eyes piercing. âAnd what have we here?â He asked in a deep, gravelly voice.

Day 1: Foster
Canon-typical violence, aftermath of a massacre, DRK backstory, light angst
hello I hope you're doing fine! I'm so sorry to send an ask like this and ofc if you don't want to answer it you obviously don't have to but I saw you have the second volume of the encyclopedia eorzea and I was wondering if it was ok to ask for you to post the sections on ompagne (the dark knight npc) if there are any? I don't have it myself and can't buy it at the moment and that's the only part I'm very interested in reading but I can't seem to find it anywhere.. thank you anyway tho!
There isnât really anything about Ser Ompagne in the second lorebook; the only Dark Knight NPC detailed in the Job characters section is Myste. The most we get is that the greatsword Caladbolg once belonged to Ompagne:
âUpon the defeat of the dark knight Ser Ompagne Deepblack, Sidurgu Orl gathered his former master and caretakerâs sword and locked it away in his armoire, vowing he would not remove it until he had proven worthy of the blade. However, a chance meeting with one who Sidurgu found to be his better convinced the knight it belonged in the hands of another.â (Encyclopaedia Eorzea II, page 193)
I skimmed through the lorebook just now, but saw nothing else. Everything we know about Ompagne comes from a brief mention in the first lorebook (how he found young Brume orphan Fray plotting revenge for a friendâs death and so took the child in) or in game itself during the DRK quests in Heavensward and Stormblood.
âShow me the man you have become, Sidurgu of the Obsidian Heart!â -Ser Ompagne Deepblack
lvl 65 Dark Knight quest sees Sidurgu making the regretful decision to take the family to the Churning Mists, as the fresh air, amazing views, and kindly moogles may be able to help Myste over his despondency. Despite Sidâs parental concerns, Rielle takes Myste to the clearing where the previous song-and-dance occurred, and tells Myste about Sidurgu and Frayâs mentor, Ser Ompagne.Â
Ompagne was a former noble, highly decorated Temple Knight of the Dragonsong War who eventually left the order when he realized heâd trained and lost so many young soldiers, he couldnât remember the face of the first boy whoâd died under his command. He became a dark knight, and adopted a Brume orphan and an Au Ra refugee as a last chance at redemption.
Sidurguâs injuries are too severe to return to Ishgard, so he and the kids stay in Moghome a bit longer--though Sidurgu does ask you to punch a moogle for him. Sidurguâs hate for the moogles may get its own post, the lines are that good.
