hey! sorry to hear you work day's rough! if you want something to write about, maybe essek stopping by the blooming grove in his early travels and getting bombarded with family love (possibly both sweet and otherwise lol) from caduceus and some of the rest of the clays, i love them and think about him feeling accepted and welcomed by them all a lot š„ŗš„ŗ
Hi! Thank you friend, this is one of the prompts I was most excited to write, thank you so much for asking! I hope y'all enjoy this little reunion.
He drifts into the clearing, sweet scent of mingled flowers on a warm breeze. Thereās a small smile that momentarily rests on his features as heās promptly tackled to the ground. āYou see? You can knock him down! Itās gotta be magic!ā
Heās been back a few times and the rate at which Clarabelle Clay has declared them friends would astound him if not for Jester. She beams up at him, clearly proud of herself. āDoing experiments again I see.ā He levels a stern look to the youngest Clay which is immediately left with laughter as she forces a wide-brimmed sunhat atop his head.
āI knew it wasnāt magnets,ā she whispers to him and then turns over her shoulder to shout at Colton, āSee Colton I knew it wasnāt magnets! He can touch the ground!ā
Essek stands gracefully, dusting dirt off of his travel cloak, āWell, youāve seen me on the ground before. You taught me how to garden young one.ā
She rolls her eyes and bites back at him, āWhatever, I'll figure it out eventually. Letās see if youāre any better at telling which plants are weeds than you were last time.ā
Despite himself he canāt help the smile that rises at the challenge, āLet me at least say hello first.ā
Itās then that he looks up and sees Colton, Caduceusā elder brother offer a wave from the doorway as Constance walks over to greet him, arms open, āEssek, itās wonderful to see you. Iām glad you made it safely.ā She hugs him and warmth permeates his bones.
Itās the way he imagines a mothersā hug is supposed to feel, āMe too, thank you for having me. I brought some things.ā He snaps a basket of fruit out of his Wristpocket, āI know itās difficult for you to obtain these normally.ā
Her smile is that of the sunlight and she goes to bring them inside and he follows. Calliope nods as he passes her on her way out into the forest, and Caduceus is found where he most often is, in the kitchen. āWell hey,ā the soft baritone pours out of a lopsided grin and Caduceus passes him a teacup, āI made enough for two, how have you been?ā
āIt is strange to be wandering. Itās nice to wear my own face.ā Caduceus nods and just a hint of pride glints in his eyes.
āTell me of your travels.ā
āWell, Iāve been making my way through your woods. This is less of a strictly research expedition and a little more about myself I suppose.ā
āThatās nice, itās good to be on your own when you know you have stable tethers back to reality. This is the Freemeadow family by the way.ā The tea is earthy and tastes green and he offers a thought to the family, to the garden, and to the Wildmother. Heās seen enough of her power and the power of her chosen to feel something as he sends thanks. The hint of the smell of flowers on a breeze.
As soon as heās finished the tea and his stories Clarabelle is pulling him by the wrist out to the garden. He pulls out gloves made for him by a dear friend and he, Clarabelle and Caduceus spend an afternoon weeding, creating beauty and allowing for its sustained existence. They tell him about visitors they receive more frequently now that the wood is healing and Caduceus tells curious tales of the long walks he takes out into the forest.
The evening meal is rife with a symphony of laughter and stories. He regales the family with stories of the cats Caleb has collected, repeats some of what heād told Caduceus earlier, and listens as they tell him stories of their own. Heās astounded again, as he was during that first week here, at the way they function together. Caduceus seems so much less stoic when surrounded by family, looking for any opportunity to inconvenience or pull one over on a sibling and Calliope matches his energy with surprising dedication.
He thinks of Verin and has it in mind to send a message, but not yet. Itās too soon. He trances that night beneath canopies of trees, tucked away near a spring and as the sounds of the night guide him to trance he feels a blanket drape over him, though he did not ask and he smiles quietly to himself. Maybe he can spare just a few days here, a respite from solitude surrounded by an unanticipated family.

Hiš¤ Omni! If you're looking for a fic request I've got one.
Okay so Essek is Feeblminded by remaining Volstrucker at his tower. Verin came to visit later that day and has been taling care of Essek, as they both would be scared of the Umavi's wrath should someone find out.
Well Caleb comes to visit a few day's later and Certainly gets a surprise.
Fluff ensues.
I'm talking the Unicorn from Despicable Me level Fluffyššš
Hi Umbra! Sorry I'm incredibly late answering this, life is weird but I hope the length makes up for it! I know I said drabble but like this just turned into a whole fic so I hope you enjoy!
Verin had worried when Essekās door hadnāt opened of its own accord, usually he knows when heās arrived. Deciding something was certainly wrong he barges his way into his brotherās tower. He finds it silent which is normal but unnerving and the unnatural stillness as he calls for Essek has his hackles up.
His knuckles pale as he grips the hilt of his sword and searches methodically throughout the tower. Finding the main floor empty he heads up the stairs to the library. Thereās a shuffle, a falling book, a whimper. He draws his sword, adrenaline coursing through his veins. The door is ajar and he can hear shuffling. He thrusts it open is momentarily relieved to see his brother. His hair is tousled and white is stained with flecks of red, his robes are torn and his mantle is askew.
Heās never seen him like this before and his heart lurches. Surprise and fear are plastered across his features, far more freely than Verinās ever seen him feel. He doesnāt talk and he seems to not even recognize him. Checking the rest of the room, the sword is returned to its sheath and Verin crouches, reaching a hand to Essek.
āBrother, what happened?ā Silence, a whimper. āEssek? Whatās wrong? Itās Verin, your brother.ā His brows unknot, and the tension in his jaw slackens. Thereās a looseness to his demeanor and as he stands he waves his hand as if to float, but nothing happens. He tries again and again. The first try was decisive, after watching him for so long Verin knows what it looks like when he casts it. The second time itās not quite right, the third time it gets looser still. By the time Verin has stopped counting and Verin has grabbed Essekās hands to calm him it seemed like Essek didnāt know what he was attempting to do.
āIs this some kind of spell? What happened?ā His brother looks up with the face of a stranger. His eyes are open and sad, his ears fall just a touch and Essek leans in to hug Verin. Heās never wanted to do that before.
Verin hugs him back. āOh Essie, what are we going to do?ā
Caleb approaches Essekās tower and is struck by immediate concern when the door doesnāt open for him. Essek always lets him in when he arrives, and with everything thatās happened he immediately panics. Caleb tries to tell himself Essek must be busy and has missed him tripping the wards. So, he lifts the knocker and gives the door a few raps.
Heād asked Caleb to meet him here to assist in the transport of his most important items after their trip to Aeor. He needs to run, he knows it and Caleb knows that turning himself in to the Dynasty would mean certain death so heās agreed to help. No amount of good will from the Bright Queen would let them bargain for his favour. Selfishly, Caleb wonāt allow him to get caught, so he will harbor Essek for some time, helping him stay out of the eyes of the Dynasty.
Eventually he knocks again, beginning to hold a firebolt just in case. āUh, just a minute,ā calls a strangerās voice from behind the wood. āIāll be right there.ā
The door opens just a crack, āWho is it?ā
āI am Caleb Widogast of the Mighty Nein, who is this?ā His hand is up and encircled in flame.
āOh thank the Light, one moment.ā Whoever he is, heās clearly relieved. Calebās firebolt stays held.
As the door opens Caleb is greeted by a tall drow, muscular with long braided back hair. He looks familiar but Caleb cannot place him. His features are slowly fading into relief from what must have been a deep concern. āHello Caleb Widogast, I am Verin Thelyss and I am so glad youāre here. Your the wizard yes?ā
Nodding, bewildered as heās being dragged into Essekās home by his brother, Caleb can hardly remember to respond, āUh ja, thatās me. Where is Essek?ā
āWell so I came by a few days ago and he didnāt let me into the tower which was weird. There have been some rumors going around and when our mother said he was back I had to ask. I donāt know if you know but⦠well itās bad.ā
Heās leading him upstairs as he explains and the back of Calebās neck is on fire. Verin doesnāt know, but there are rumors that are most likely true. Is he too late?
āSo, Iām hoping since you also practice the arcane you might know whatās happened here and how to solve it.ā
He leads Caleb into the library and Essek is seated on a chair idly flipping through a book far too quickly. It doesnāt even look like heās reading, Caleb knows what he looks like when heās reading. The quiet concentration and the tension it brings his jaw is completely missing. When Essek looks up at him thereās recognition but no words and when he rises to make his way to Caleb, he walks.
Heās wide-eyed and has a sweet smile across his face, itās difficult to look away but if he doesnāt the heat rising in his cheeks will show. āEssek, what is it mein Freunde?ā
No words. Why canāt he talk and why isnāt he floating?
āEssek?ā A gentle hand reaches up to rest on his cheek and the heat takes over at the abrupt contact. Especially with Verin standing over his shoulder observing them. āVerin how long has he been like this?ā
āAbout 2 days. I didnāt really know what had happened and if the Umavi found out well⦠Iām unsure what she would do.ā Verin is a little more easier to map out than Essek had been initially and heās been told enough stories about Dierta to understand the undercurrent of Verinās words.
āJa, I understand.ā Verin starts at that and Caleb just continues past it, āI believe he has been affected by the spell Feeblemind. I - ah - have experience with this kind of thing. We have friends that can cure him but I will have to contact them, which I will not be able to do until tomorrow.ā
Essekās hand has wound its way into Calebās and he tries and fails miserably to contain the blush that he knows is spreading to his ears. Memories of little touches in Aeor flood back and Caleb pushes away thoughts of conversations heād promised theyād have later, after Essek was safe. To call to attention this thing between them and get it out in the open before it drives him mad. Even if Essekās feelings do not align with his it will be better to have it in the open.
āSo this isnāt hurting him?ā
Caleb turns to Essek, āAre you okay? Are you hurt?ā He remembers a blur of time, when his mind had failed him. He remembers terror, looking down at his hands and not knowing whose they were. He didnāt have an anchor, nothing but his own thoughts, with someone there it might be different. Essek canāt understand him but the tone of voice seems to elicit some positive emotions and Essek squeezes his hand, a contented smile across his face, āHe seems alright to me. It is unpleasant to be cut off from your casting, but he isnāt in pain and he isnāt alone.ā Itās difficult to mitigate the emotion bleeding into his voice.
He pushes down memories of the years heād been locked away and squeezes Essekās hand back, reassuringly. āHave you gotten him to eat?ā
Verin nods, āOccasionally. Probably not as much as he needs. Iām not exactly an excellent cook and nobody can see him like this so Iāve sent his staff away.ā
āAlright, well Iāll just do this then.ā he begins casting the tower, āI understand if you want to stay but if you need to go I can care for him.ā he wants Verin to leave, he wants him gone so badly, to just take care of Essek properly without the shadow of somebody who doesnāt know hanging over them.
āI should be back to Bazzoxan soon. Theyāll begin asking after me.ā Caleb finishes casting the tower and leads Essek in. Just before he enters, Verin stops him, āYou mean something to each other. Iāve never seen him act this way before, granted thereās an arcane influence but genuinely he has never smiled like he did when he saw you. I trust you with this because I think he would. Do not betray that.ā
Caleb nods, āOf course not. Weāve faced the most difficult challenges of my life together and with our friends. I will care for him.ā Verin seems satisfied with that and makes to leave, and Caleb enters the tower to find Essek waiting in the centre of the tower. He has an idea of where he wants to go. As the tower door closes behind Verin, he and Essek begin to drift upwards. Essek opens his mouth as if to reflexively murmur āupā as had become their custom in their long travels together and his brows knot in distress, as if heās realized again that his voice will not come. Caleb reaches for his hand, to comfort him and says it for them both, to which Essek smiles.
The drow releases Calebās hand and begins to swirl around, never leaving the central column and Caleb is forced to mirror his motions lest they collide. He flashes back to a moment of levity when theyād first come to Aeor. They had showboated then, dancing around each other as their works often did. This Essek is less restrained and his eyes and nose crinkle into a genuine smile when Caleb joins his frivolity.
They stop at the ninth floor which Caleb had known to be Esseksā destination and immediately Essek lays on the pillows he always places in the corner. Usually, on their research expedition, he tranced in his room but on particularly emotional days they both preferred an expanse of stars above them as they rested. It became tradition and over time theyād drifted closer and closer together, until they would sometimes come to consciousness to find that through the night Essek had curled into Calebās side or that their hands had wound together unknowingly.
Now, Essekās eyes are wide and his mouth hangs open in wonder as though itās his first time seeing it all over again. Caleb stands over him, following his gaze up to the idly shifting starscape above. Caleb is quickly distracted by the versions of them that traverse different paths. Sometimes in each otherās company, other times in solitude. In a few they hold hands or make contact at the shoulders. Those are the ones he likes the most.
When his gaze is pulled back downwards, Essek stares up at him with a tenderness that quickly turns to expectation. Heās arranged burgundy cushions across the floor beside him for Caleb and so he obliges. As he stretches out across the crude bed slender, cool fingers interlock his own and he lays back and tells Essek of the constellations heās hidden among the stars.
When Caleb himself was in this state he remembered lacking familiarity. Nothing around him made sense and the upheaval of his life only moments prior had only amplified the disorientation of the magic that kept him prisoner for 11 years.
Essek has someone to watch over him, heās in a place that evidently brings him much joy and in recent months heās found himself halfway to peace. Caleb finds his heart swell at the idea of making this experience bearable.
The silence was always the worst so he points to guide the elfās eyes as he tells them the stories behind each constellation. He tells him of Nila, gentle and fierce. Of Twiggy, ever optimistic and wholly delightful. He tells him about Reani who Essek has spent some time with. Brief recognition flashes across his face, though itās quickly replaced with frustration. Caleb remembers. He remembers knowing that someone was there who he should recognize but not having the words to know he had forgotten their name. He was in terror and treated everyone as a threat. Essek treats everything with wonder and discovery. The innocence is sweet and a syrupy feeling pools in Calebās throat as heās again confronted with the way his heart swells when Essek looks at Caleb with that same contented smile.
He scoots closer and this is entirely too much. The idea that this version of Essek may curl into his side willingly, while they were fully conscious where the other version cannot unsettles him. Instead he stands, offering his hand, āWhy donāt we get you something to eat ja?ā Thereās a momentary droop of his ears, much more pronounced than any movement heād seen before before he lifts Essek and they go down to the dining room.
If there is to be anything significant between them it cannot be spurred under these circumstances. Caleb has to know he means it. As they wait while he cats prepare what had become their usual fare while traversing Aeor, he defaults to telling stories. First he tells him of the tunnels they traversed to reach the Dynasty, crafting an illusion as well as he can of the crystalline caves they made camp in. Food arrives and he continues weaving story and image as Essek picks at the well spiced soup comprised mainly of squash and potato. As he crafts an illusion of the dragon turtle theyād fought just after the peace talks out of amber and morphs its shape to a smaller turtle and then a sea slug, laughing to himself at the absurdity, he notices the clink of Essekās spoon has long subsided.
Glancing over electric eyes focus on him instead of the illusion, so he drops it. āAh, Es tut mir Leid, I know I tend to get carried away.ā A little contented noise bubbles from Essekās throat and his heart squeezes. In a desperate attempt to try and get Essek to eat more he turns back to his own soup and looks expectantly over to his friend.
Giving him a look of exasperation, he mirrors Caleb and eats most of the soup. Caleb rips up bread and encourages him to dip it in whatās left of the soup and finally, the bowl is empty. They leave the cats to clean up and Essekās hand grasps Calebās again and squeezes. He knows he shouldnāt draw conclusions or let himself be taken by these gestures that the man wouldnāt make if heād had the presence of mind, but itās turning into a losing game.
With the time spent on the ninth floor and the prolonged battle of coaxing Essek to eat they only have a few hours until sleep. Essek takes his customary seat on the couch in the study and Caleb withdraws some of the lighter fiction that now populates the shelves. Lying back on the sofa, feet resting on the armrest, head by Essek he holds up the copy of Der Katzenprinz to show the illustrations. āYou seem to like hearing me talk so why donāt I share this with you? Either way you wonāt understand what I say so I will read it to you as it was originally intended.ā
He begins, in Zemnian to tell him the fairy story that had brought him so much joy as a child, and the cats bring them hot chocolate as instructed. Warm mug in hand, Essek sits patiently through the story and as it turns to a close, picks up another of the books Caleb has gathered and thrusts it upon his chest. A real laugh bubbles up at that and he obliges.
As the night winds on and the mugs are emptied, Essekās hand winds its way through Calebās hair, gently combing. When he looks up at Essek heās met with soft, drooping eyes and a plain smile laced with nothing but care. He tries to stop Essek over the course of the book but finds that the drow always goes back to his hair so eventually, he leaves it. When Essekās breaths even and elongate and heās having trouble keeping his eyes open, Caleb sends him to trance.
Heās met with a slightly mournful look as Essek settles into the cushions heās provided for trancing, but Caleb squeezes his shoulder, āIf something goes wrong the cats will know to come get me. This is for the best.ā Looking not at all reassured, but staying in place, Essek lets him leave without protest.
In the middle of sleep, dreamless and warm, thereās pressure. Then a caterwaul cuts through his subconscious followed by several more. He awakes with a start and immediately the cats gather around his feet as he pulls on slippers. They lead him to Essekās room, where through the closed doors he can hear the sounds of furniture being disturbed.
Barging in, heart pounding, he finds Essek with tears streaming down his face. āEssek Schatz whatās wrong?ā He kneels, abandoning any sense of propriety or boundaries and as he collapses into Calebās arms with nearly silent sobs heās struck by how small the other man is.
āItās alright Essek, whatever it was it cannot hurt you. I will keep you safe as you have done me.ā Theyāve never talked about the nights when the cats would do the same to Essek as theyād done to Caleb. When heād been awoken from nightmares with angry red scratches down his forearms and a friend to bandage them. Theyāve never quite discussed the comfort in Essek trancing just beside Calebās bed on difficult nights and heās tried to stifle contemplation about the safety the man brings to his subconscious. The timing wasnāt right and despite his own longing he couldnāt make that step towards Essek. Not then.
Now, however, the elf shudders in his arms and he brings him into his lap, lighting soft amber globules of light to examine Essek. When he finds no physical harm he puts them out again and draws him in tighter as Essek clutches at the sides of his nightshirt and curls into his chest. He sings gentle lullabies his mother had once used to soothe him, voice cracking slightly as he flexes it in a long forgotten way. Eventually the shaking stops and breath becomes more solid, but hands stay grasped into his shirt so, with assistance from the cats, he maneuvers them into an easier sleeping position. Ever determined, Essek stays in his arms the whole time and when he tries to encourage him to trance beside him, arms wind around his waist.
āOkay, okay. If this will help.ā Caleb resigns himself to creaky joints the next morning and sleeps with Essek in his arms, pushing away any indulgent thoughts of future nights spent with him in the same orientation.
When he awakes Essek is gone from his lap, though their fingers are laced and his head rests atop the drowās on his shoulder. āGuten Morgen Essek.ā He startles and smiles over at Caleb. Open, honest, vulnerable. They need to fix this. āI just need to prepare and then we will see Jester ja?ā He receives a blank stare in return and nods to himself. āI will be back in a few moments and then we will go to Nicodranas. Just wait here.ā He leaves and dresses quickly, returning to find Essek essentially where heād been left. He takes a moment to glance over his spellbook and concentrates as he casts Sending, āHallo Jester, I need your assistance with a pretty big restoration. Can you help today?ā
She sounds half-asleep as she responds, āCaleb? Oh hi! Yeah I can help, just come to mamaās, weāre in Nicodranas. Oh my gosh I have to tell you, the dragon turtle-ā her word economy same as ever.
āOkay Essek, Jester can help. I donāt know where you kept your parasol but Iām sure she can make you another.ā With that they head out the door and Caleb transports them safely to the Lavish Chateau. Essekās hand never leaves his.
Upon arrival theyāre beset by a shouted greeting and Jester crushes Caleb in a hug before even realizing the other man is there. āOhmigod Essek hi! I missed you!ā Instead of awkwardly patting her back as he usually does, he wraps his arms around her waist and pulls her in. āHey Caleb, whatās going on with Essek?ā
She pulls back and sees his broad smile and dancing eyes and looks at Caleb distinctly concerned. āAh- Iām afraid he is a victim of the Feeblemind spell. Itās what they used against me in⦠well.ā Her face clouds with understanding. āHeās okay physically though, whoever attacked him clearly just needed him out of the way. If you can use Greater Restoration that will undo the effects. Heās been ah - rather clingy.ā
She waggles her eyebrows at him, making suggestive noise, and gets out the required diamond dust, sprinkling it delicately over Essek who watches in wonder. She puts both hands on her shoulders and green radiant energy emanates from her and passes to him. Before long heās shaking his head and stepping back, voice hoarse from disuse, āWhere- Jester? Thank you oh my gods thank you.ā
She grins back at him, āIām glad youāre back Essek! Itās a good thing Caleb brought you here you were acting so weird-ā
Sheās cut off as he chokes out, āCaleb.ā and looks over with a deep violet flush and wide, apologetic eyes. āI ah- I am sorry for putting you through that. I-ā
āNein, do not apologize. Maybe we should get back to your tower to try and piece together who did this to you and what they were after ja?ā
Essek nods and casts his levitation cantrip, shoulders sagging with relief when it works. āYes, of course. Thank you Jester, Iām sorry we canāt stay but-ā
She hugs the both of them again, āItās okay, you have lots to talk about probably I donāt know bye!ā she gives Caleb a wink as he begins casting the spell again and to his surprise Essekās hand winds itself in his as they vanish.
Theyāre back in the tower and Caleb looks down, Essekās hand still in his. Essek drops it and thereās a flush set deep into his cheeks and it spreads to his cheeks as their eyes meet. āCaleb I-ā he swallows āI remember most of what happened, though not very clearly. I um-ā his eyes are downcast and Caleb braces for what he believes to be coming, āThank you for your patience. Iām sorry if I made you uncomfortable it is very difficult to explain but I think youāre aware of the feeling. I didnāt exactly have my full faculties and I fear I broke boundaries that may have encroached too far on your hospitality and our friendship.ā
Itās difficult to see him so apologetic for the affection displayed. This thing between them has gone unspoken quite too long and before he realizes it heās speaking, āDonāt apologize for that Schatz, I ah- I didnāt mind. Thereās something I think we ought to discuss fairly plainly because I do not want to mince words about the way I feel anymore, itās tiring.ā
Essek looks up to meet him, steeling himself and as Caleb is about to speak he cuts him off, āI am aware enough of how I acted to realize I cannot properly hide my feelings further.ā He takes a deep breath, the back of Calebās neck is burning and time has all but frozen, āI care deeply for you Caleb. It is difficult to bring myself to those words for I know this is the last thing I deserve but here I am, a fool for you. I know that there were moments in Aeor, I hold them close to my heart as precious things in a life of solitude. If you do not do the same, if you do not feel the same I will remain your friend if youāll allow it, your research partner, anything. But-ā he looks down almost sheepishly, āI owe it to you to be forthright and so I will tell you that if youāll have me, I would very much like to see where this takes us.ā
A smile breaks across Calebās face as their eyes meet, āMay I kiss you?ā
Essek draws in a sharp breath, eyes wide, and nods. It takes Caleb only a moment to close the gap, hands sliding around Essekās waist and over the back of his neck as he leads them together. Essekās hands hold his shoulders and his eyes flutter closed as their lips meet, electricity and heat mixing. When they finally pull back theyāre both flushed. Essek lets out a huff of a laugh and Caleb wraps him tightly as he brings him in again, smiling into another kiss.
shadowgast with the prompt "your hair is soft after you wash it" :)
Thank you for the request and I love your @! I wrote two things for this, I'm posting the fluffy one but let me know if you want the slightly angstier one too.
-----
Essek loves this. Theyāre in bed as they often are, he sits up against the headboard and Caleb rests with his head on his thighs, hair slowly drying after their bath, and this is peace. He doesnāt have to look over his shoulder here, doesnāt have to worry about whispers in court. Itās just him, and Caleb with at least two cats and a book each.
His book hovers just above Calebās head, the latest poorly written sweeping romance sent to them by Jester. Calebās already vetted it and promised him there were bits heād like.
The Nein have taught Essek many things, one of the most surprising of which being heās something of a romantic. He never would have guessed that grand romantic gestures would leave him nearly clutching his heart or smiling fondly to a page. Itās embarrassing and Calebās teasing knows no bounds but he finds he canāt help himself.
He feels an hand lay over his, where heās been idly carding his hands through soft auburn locks, letting the silk of Calebās hair fall over his hand. āLove, youāre worrying the same spot. Are you okay?ā
He shakes out of the narrative and lifts Calebās hand to press soft kisses to worn knuckles, āIām sorry cukierku, I got distracted. Your hair is so soft after youāve washed it.ā
āI can hardly begrudge you that Schatz.ā Their lips meet and they return to books. Eventually, Caleb falls asleep in his lap, book dropping to the covers. He lets him rest for a few minutes, fingers still combing through now dry hair, before gently nudging him just awake enough to slip under the blankets, lights dropping as Essek curls into his side.
can you do some shadowgast where can you comes home after a long day and realizes how great his life is because essek is waiting at home for him?
Hello! I can and I did! Thank you so much for asking I hope you enjoy <3
Calebās hair is more grey than red these days and he feels that age in his bones often. He sends the last student off after his final classroom of the week and breathes a sigh of relief. He idly shuffles papers, trying to bring his office to a semblance of tidiness before wearily running through the runes to teleport home.
The week has been long. The month has been long. Itās difficult at this age, leaving. Knowing he only has so much time left and choosing to be away, but his students need him. Heād coached Yural, an advanced transmutation student, into creating his first transmuterās stone. It had been a wonderful moment, the wonder on his face, realizing his own potential. Itās the whole reason heād gotten into teaching, and he knew Yural would do amazing things one day.
The year has been long. Heās been in and out of hearings all year, in part due to some comments heād made regarding the King and the reach of the Cerberus Assembly the previous year and Astrid only has so much pull. Sheās been keeping the heat off of him for years and it was bound to catch up eventually. His entire character has been pulled into question and it had taken pressure from outside forces to get the heat off. Retirement could be an option, if he could stand to sit still that long. Heās never been good at that.
He finishes his gestures and lands safely in the warm sunlight of Nicodranas. Arriving just outside, in a garden full of lush purple and blue flowers with bees lazily drifting between bushes he breathes in lavender and sea breeze and crosses the threshold into their home.
Heās immediately beset by several cats, one of which is currently crawling up his pant leg.
Before he can take in the sources of the different meows and the fragrant scent that floats out from the kitchen heās swept up in an embrace and his eyes flutter closed at familiar lips and itās like his whole body sighs as he smiles into soft violet lips. Pulling back he sees his mage. Despite the way time has written its way across his face, Essek never changes. It used to hurt, but now itās comfortable and reassuring. Heās constant and tethering and heās here, with him now. He has been for some time.
āHow has your week been darling?ā
He leans in for another kiss, āIt was exhausting Schatz. I love you.ā
Bemusement flits about his features, āI love you too. Is everything alright?ā
He pulls Essek back, burying his face in his neck. Essek has taken to wearing Calebās scarves and he inhales the mix of cloves, licorice and the faint hint of a rich red wine. āThank you for being here, even after all this time.ā
Essekās light laugh resonates through them both, āThank you for always coming home.ā
Whenever Caleb is away Essek cooks dinner. Heās become an accomplished cook over the years and as they eat he tells Essek of Yural and the strides the boy has made. In turn he hears stories of Lucās progress in his arcane, much to the exasperation of his father.
That night they lie in bed, as they always do after a week away. Caleb lies face down and Essek insists on working out the knots in his shoulders and back. āYou are far too kind to me mein Liebchen. I donāt know what Iāve done to deserve such treatment.ā
āNothing my darling. You never needed to do anything to earn this. Itās yours because I want to give it.ā
Later still, Caleb holds Essek tight to his chest, curling into his back. He always falls asleep this way, eventually Essekās trance will end and heāll extract himself from Caleb to read but for now they are close and thatās all Caleb needs.
Nobody asked for this but I want to write some cute shit before going back to my AU so here you go! The spoils of my warmups! (This is from a prompt list you can find here if you'd like to make a request of me)
104. Closing their eyes and memorizing each otherās faces with your fingers.
Theyāre seated this night, like they so often are, in twin armchairs, thrifted and lovingly restored by Jester to make them match. They are cozy and worn, the chairs have been with them as long as their lives have entwined. Over the years all thatās changed is the position of the chairs, theyāve gotten closer and closer, inching over with every cleaning, Essek thinking no those are usually closer together. Eventually the end table between them had to be forgone for a small coffee table in front as now, the arms touch and neither man is properly seated in his chair.
Essek floats and Caleb leans his back against the arm closest his partner so that the drow can idly wander his hand through his hair. Itās always soothed him, and now despite his hair being more snow than fire, itās a gesture that brings comfort and love. He looks up to Essek to find him staring downward, and, even after decades spent like this, it still brings a familiar heat to his cheeks. Essek looks away as his hand wanders down to Calebās face. Initially heās just stroking his cheek, delicately winding a thumb across the wrinkles that begin to set, the laugh lines from nights spent with their old friends and the crows feet to match. He goes up to trace worry lines long set in place in his forehead and Calebās eyes flutter closed as his friends work around and down the bridge of his nose and spread to trace cheekbones and along his jaw.
āSchatz? Itās not that I mind the attention, but what are you up to?ā
āLoving you.ā He says so simply, like it should be obvious.
Caleb laughs lightly, āThank you mein liebling but I think you know what I mean.ā
A small, good-natured huff comes from where Essek hovers, āI am memorizing you. Your memory is perfect and mine is not so I have to put in the work you know.ā
āSo youāre studying me?ā
āYes, and I always aim for a perfect grade.ā
A kiss is pressed to his forehead and Caleb sits up, turning around and tugs Essekās wrist encouraging him to maneuver out of his chair to sit in his lap. They often end up like this at the end of a long night and though it can make Calebās hips ache over an extended time, he never wants to give up the ritual. āHere, if youāre going to study you may as well do it upright.ā He teases as Essek settles in.
His face, still unchanged, after all this time is serene as he takes both thumbs and drifts them gently again over his cheekbones. As he maps every plane of Calebās face he lifts his own hands to rest on his husbandās cheekbones, closing his eyes and smoothing calloused thumbs over the purple skin thatās still so smooth, unmarred by time.
He brushes the white brows, always perfectly groomed, that frame the violet eyes heās learned to call home. His stubble is nowhere near as prolific as Calebās, his hair grows slower and he maintains a close shave, but the scratch on his fingertips is something he will never forget as he drifts down the front of Essekās jaw to the point of his chin that had been one of the first features of his Caleb had noticed in the throne room.
He draws his fingers up the contours of his ears, memorizing their taper and point, brushing his fingers over the dangling earrings always present. Eventually Essekās hands drop and Calebās still roam. He feels every curve, every angle, the plane of his forehead where heād placed the first kiss, the cheeks that he still showers with affection daily. His lips, ever soft and the way they stretch when he smiles. The place right under his eyes where the tip of Calebās thumbs are brushed by feathery lashes and the contours of his hairline where he promptly begins to tousle the hair that lies above to Essekās dismay.
āItās just me, you donāt have to look any certain way.ā He opens his eyes finally and draws Essek in for a kiss. They stay seated like that long past the point of Calebās hips protesting and talk, luxuriating in the time they have. They exchange theories, talk about their days, take a moment to be slow together and to remember this feeling as it is right now.

Hello! For the imtimacy prompt list #30 for Shadowgastš¤š
Hello! This was the prompt I was most hoping someone would ask me so THANK YOU for that! If anyone else would like to make a request I have one left in my inbox and am always happy to do more, especially for this list! Here is the post in question!
As a side note: welcome to the version of Caleb and Essek from my no rules no angst just right Carly Rae Jepsen song lyric inspired College!AU in a modern fantasy kinda setting. This just feels most to me like the version of Essek and Caleb that would do this and it gives you a bit of insight into the tone of my BIG work in progress right now! Enjoy!
30: doing beauty treatments, like facials or manicures, hair dying or face masks
Essek has long stopped knocking before entering Caleb, Beau and Jesterās apartment, but he still likes to call out his arrival though he knows Caleb is the only one home.
Jester and Beau have gone back home for a few days, visiting Jesterās mother in Nicodranas. Caleb elected to stay behind saying he had too much work to do, which is true. Essek finds him in his room, still as much a mess as it was the last time he was here. The small desk is completely covered in books all with several markers placed in their pages and the mess spills onto the bed. Caleb is āsittingā on the chair containing most of his clothing and doesnāt appear to realize heās come in.
He drops his levitation, trying to make noise so he doesnāt startle Caleb too badly as he approaches from behind and smooths his hands from his shoulders down to his hands. Caleb looks up as Essekās chin presses into the top of his head, āDrogi, when is the last time you ate anything?ā
Without hesitation, āAround elven, Iāll take a break soon Iām on the edge of something here.ā
Essek sighs, āDarling itās nearly six, I brought food, just take a break now with me?ā He watches Caleb place a marker in the book to save his space and he finishes a few thoughts in the literature review before standing and smiling wearily at him.
āJa, a break is probably a good idea. Thank you Schatz.ā He stands and for a moment Essek lets Caleb distract him by wrapping strong arms around his waist and pulling him in for a kiss.
Essek has been looking forward to this particular date for a while and finally got the chance to suggest it, surprised when Caleb agreed with little hesitation.
It had started a few days ago when Caleb had slept over. Heād watched Essekās skin care routine and had begun asking questions which led to the confirmation of Essekās theory that Caleb has never so much as moisturized his face, much less done any of the other pampering that Essek considers central to his sense of well-being.
Tonight, Essek gets to show Caleb what itās like. After they finish eating, they wind up in the bathroom. Essek pulls out a massive bag full of creams, ingredients, washes and all kinds of products. āSit.ā
āEssek, I need to see the mirror to shave.ā He presses Calebās shoulders and sits him on the closed toilet lid shaking his head, āCaleb, you are taking a break. Let me.ā
Drow are not immune to facial and body hair. Essek has never had much but Verin always has. One time when Verin was particularly injured in early adulthood Essek had to learn how to shave him during recovery. He has someone else for that now, so Essek transfers his knowledge to Caleb.
He gently spreads a soft cream across his partnerās face with the gentle touch of a brush and he pulls out a straight razor, the only possession he has from his father. Carefully and gently he shaves Calebās face, dragging the razor across tawny stubble while the man sits beneath him with closed eyes, completely trusting.
It doesnāt take as long as heād thought it would and heās able to begin gently washing his loverās face, humming as he goes, occasionally singing in undercommon. Caleb looks more at rest than Essek has every seen him, sighing every so often as Essek exfoliates, washes and tones his skin. He steps back and instinctively Caleb goes to touch his face. Looking in the mirror the main difference is calm and peace. āOkay now this is the fun part.ā
Essek mixes up two small cups of ingredients, one is his proprietary blend for his own skin, one that he thinks will suit Caleb more, āOk now trust me. Weāre going to leave these on for 15 minutes. Iāll do yours, you can do mine. As revenge.ā
Calebās eyebrows quirk in confusion as Essek begins slathering the face mask onto his pale skin and then grimaces at the cold unfortunate texture of the mask. āAh ja I see what you mean, this helps? In some way?ā
Essek nods, āIt will help tone out some of the redness and smooth out other things. I promise it will be worth it.ā
āI trust you.ā Essek smiles and puts a dollop on the tip of Calebās nose and the fake scowl that follows is delightful and adorable.
āYou shouldnāt.ā Essek winks and flashes fangs at the other and Caleb grabs the cup of Essekās mask and boldly smears it over his forehead in protest. A shiver goes down his spine, he hates this part but itās more fun with Caleb.
They go into the living room and put on one of the old movie musicals Caleb is so fond of and Essek starts on Calebās hands. āI wonāt do anything extravagant I promise. You can just do a top coat if youād like, but I did bring most of my collection if youād like to look.ā
Caleb opens the deceptively small case and shakes his head fondly upon the realization itās enchanted to hold more than one would expect. āAll this enchantment for nail lacquer?ā
Essek scoffs, āOf course, you donāt want to know how much room this would take up if I had to lay it all out in the apartment.ā
Caleb hums along to the music as Essek works, taming and shaping the nail beds that have been left to their own devices for decades and Essek finds himself distracted by romantic songs and well choreographed dance numbers occasionally. Far more distracting is the beauty of Calebās baritone singing along to a style of music Essek is unfamiliar with, warm and low and full of love as he looks down at Essekās meticulous work.
He ends up with an iridescent top coat, just a little bit of flair but subtle enough most wonāt notice. Midway through they pause to rid themselves of the face masks and Essek removes the mixture for Caleb and then for himself so as to not mess up his own work. He smooths on some moisturizer for Caleb, ever patiently sitting with his eyes closed. āHow does that feel pereÅko?ā
āGood, itās very cool, my skin feels⦠fresh?ā
āTake a look for yourself.ā Essek smiles, it isnāt a miracle by any means but some of the redness of Calebās face is brought down just a bit, giving more prominence to the scattering of delicate freckles across the bridge of his nose and itās smooth and fresh.
āI can see the merits of this.ā he says, in slight awe, feeling this skin of his face.
āNow, let me finish your hands so I can do mine.ā
He finishes Calebās hands with moisturizer and a good long massage, and starts to work on his own, removing the customary black polish he usually keeps there, Calebās arm around his shoulders, watching him work. āIs there anything I can help with?ā
Essek considers, āWell Iāll shape on my own. Would you like to pick a colour for me? Iām tired of black. You can do the last step as well.ā Caleb is back looking into the nail polish case and, rather quickly, presents him with a deep burgundy.
āHowās this? I just think it would look good.ā
Essek presses a kiss into his forehead, āPerfect, thank you darling.ā He goes back to shaping his nails to fine points and applying a base coat. As he begins to apply colour Caleb watches him intently, focus on the movie lost. āWould you like to help with his?ā
He blushes a bit, āI do not think I would be very good at it and I donāt want to ruin your hard work.ā
Essek laughs, āYou wonāt ruin anything. Here, watch me do my right hand and you can do my left. Itāll help me immensely. Any mistakes you make can be cleaned up with little effort I promise.ā
Caleb is better at this than either of them expected. Only a little varnish makes its way to Essekās skin and thatās easily enough removed, he even flips Essekās hand as heād done his own to apply the polish underneath. Then, when itās dry, he rubs the stress away from Essekās hands and they share many looks as a second musical begins playing. They pay little attention to it, instead giving in to the quiet comfort of the evening, of learning to care for another and yourself. Caleb has all but forgotten his previous state of anxiety for the evening and Essek hopes heāll let him do this again. āThank you for this liebling I needed this more than I could have guessed.ā
Essek is pressed to his side now as they drink tea and finish up a horror movie, āI am glad my love. Thank you for letting me share this with you. If you ever want it again all you have to do is ask.ā Caleb nods and over time they both fall asleep on the couch, wrapped in each otherās arms, waterlogged with the quiet, weighty bliss of love.
Alright hereās some hurt/comfort as requested. Canon divergence where Caleb wasnāt able to dispel Gaudiusā hold on Essek.Ā
One of Lucienās many eyes looks toward him and everything slows. Warmth seeps in through his pores, sinking in through skin going straight to his head. He hears their call and for a moment he resists but, why would he?Ā
Heās never belonged. He didnāt belong in Roshona, surrounded by religious zealots blinded by the comfort that comes with trust. Incurious, simple minded fools. He didnāt even belong with the Nein, not really. None of them trust him, heās been eclipsed by his sins and nothing can break through to them.Ā
He needs a blank slate, if he is to belong anywhere he has to be able to start over completely. That is what Gaudius offers, a new beginning, no judgement, no proving himself. He doesnāt have to work for their acceptance and love fills his heart. The Somnovum will take him as he is and thereās never anything heās wanted more.
Everything is clearer now, these people were never in it for him. He drags his hands, beginning to pull at the strands of gravity as Lucien fills his mind with the power he can achieve once heās one with them. When he joins the city.
The human lifts his hand to cast at him and without even thinking he waves his hand to counter the spell. āEssek no!ā The blue tiefling looks horrified, feigning care even now.Ā
He curls his fingers in, pooling gravity and thrusts his hands forward, centering the darkness on the wizard whoās toyed with him for nearly a year. The effect isnāt immediate but it will pay off, heās sure and those caught inside, the humans, the clerics, the angel, the halfling will feel itās effects soon enough.Ā
The firbolg is the first. He hasnāt taken much damage but this seems to get to him. As Essekās fingers clench he crumples like paper and Essek squeezes before releasing. He flies as far as he can but it isnāt far enough. More will come.Ā
Up next, he feels the thief resisting, sheās strong and muscles through but itās not pretty. Her form stretches briefly as he pulls and stretches with two hands before snapping back into place and heās sure she cries for the wizard who cannot hear or see her. Something twinges in the back of his mind but Lucien calls out again and he remembers the family waiting for him.Ā
The monk tries to appeal to him through her newfound abilities, she seems to be able to see through the darkness. She tries her hardest to reach some part of him still foolish enough to turn away from happiness and towards them, he hardly listens. She moves to run out of his grasp but just before she can make it he grabs hold and twists. Her body contorts and he can almost feel her crumble away, but she gains control and she just barely breaks out of his grasp.Ā
He feels Caleb try to resist but his efforts just arenāt enough. He looks Essek directly in the eyes, and he hears whispers of the wizardās voice try to get through to him, āYou must break free, we need more timeā. Essekās face stretches into a wicked grin at this obvious manipulation tactic (I will show you belonging the way he couldnāt bear to) as he twists his wrist and pulls down, compressing the body in front of him. The wizard nearly leaves his influence but heāll have another chance to take him down.Ā
The angel didnāt stand a chance. She canāt resist the pull of his gravity and even if she could scream the monkās name she wouldnāt be able to see her or save her. As he finishes with her his mind drifts back to memory, spurred by the wizardās sweet words. We need more time. It will take time. You were not born with venom in your veins. Something snaps in the back of his mind and the Nonagonās whispers turn to acid in his mind. He can see properly, he drops the spell and turns to Lucien, screaming as he turns on the beast with nine eyes, unleashing a torrent of inky black lightning, hitting him square in the chest.Ā
-------
The battle is over and by some strange grace theyāre all alive. The Nein are both celebrating and consoling each other. In the end they appealed to Molly and, for the second time, he was his own undoing.Ā
It feels like intruding to be there, he who has done another irrevocable deed. He would leave immediately if he still had the energy but that effort is insurmountable. Caduceus had gotten them back to their own plane and theyāre resting in an open field, surrounded by Calebās alarm spell, taking turns at watch. None of them are quite ready to be around their loved ones quite yet, needing one more night together as a family before dealing with the gravity of what theyāve accomplished.Ā
Fjord holds Jester, keeping an eye on the horizon and whispering comfort as she silently cries into his shoulder. Beau and Yasha are curled together trying to sleep, Caleb has Frumpkin around his shoulders and Veth is curled into his side, Caduceusā legs overlapping with Fjordās in the tight space. Thereās hardly room for Essek to sit in this small circle of sombre camaraderie, and the emotions of his travelling companions are simply too much for him so he stands to put some distance between them. Just for a moment. Just so he doesnāt have to look them in the eyes.
He stands, knees cracking and makes his way out to he open field. Nobody seems disturbed, none of them react and nobody calls after him. In the night air heās met with stars and silence, the night sky used to comfort him. Now itās a void he could be swallowed in and with the way he feels right now, he wishes it would.Ā
His hair is coated with somebodyās blood, his body is battered and bruised and his spirit is shattered. Theyād taken him along to help, theyād allowed him such an important opportunity to redeem himself and heād nearly killed them. Heād made it far easier for Lucien to knock them down, luckily Caduceus and Jester had been focused and able to heal quickly enough. Heād ended up being a burden and once again a traitor.Ā
āEssek.ā He hears his name, a warning so he isnāt startled. Calebās voice drifts on the breeze, āAre you alright?āĀ
He sighs, letting his head fall and squeezing his eyes shut. āNo.ā
āLetās sit.āĀ
He obliges, silent, waiting for Caleb to set the tone.Ā
āYou need to know we do not blame you for what happened. Yasha turned too, these things are not our fault.āĀ
He canāt bare to look over but he does anyway. Calebās eyes shine with worry, furrowed brow pulling creases into his forehead. āIt could have turned out so badly Caleb. That magic, itās made to kill. You are all very lucky for your ability to escape and my comparative lack of experience in battle. I could have turned you to dust.āĀ
Caleb sighs, āGuilt over hypotheticals is a waste of your time and energy. You could have, but you didnāt. Weāre all still here, and we wouldnāt be without you. Donāt let yourself fall into the trap of comfortable self-loathing, youāll waste years.āĀ
āYou couldnāt understand Caleb, I was convinced. I didnāt even want to resist. It was only-ā he pauses on the brink of the confession and decides to throw caution to the wind, āIt was only you that brought me back. My mind wasnāt my own, I was imprisoned and lied to and I was stupid enough to believe it.āĀ
āI understand more than you know.ā He looks instantly older, Essek has frequently wondered what Trent had done to Caleb to take such a bright and excellent man with so much kindness in his heart, and turn him hard. āI have been deceived, lied to, it lead to my worst moments. Iāve told you we are not so different and itās clearer now more than ever. If there is redemption for me, as Iāve been assured many times there will be, you will find yours.āĀ
Essek shakes his head, āIt would have been nobler for me to die for the world than to continue this pathetic existence. It would have been a just end, poetic and balanced. Now thereās so much unresolved I donāt know where to start or where to go.āĀ
Calebās hand covers his on the grass, āWell, we can start by researching, itās what we do best. Everyone else has someone to go to, family to see, something to go back to. I only have forward momentum, more to learn and see. You could join me, we can go back to Aeor and see what comes.āĀ
Essek nods, āI do not deserve that but because I am a selfish creature I accept your offer.āĀ
Caleb squeezes his hand and he looks up again, into his eyes, āIt does not matter what you think you deserve. You are not the decider of what I offer you.ā He has a fierce look about him, he may have hit a nerve, āTrust that I know what I want and when I say I want you with me itās not out of pity or some savior complex. Let me offer you this and quell any self-pity or doubt. Iām not obligated to like you or want to be around you, but I do because I like you Essek. I think it should be plain by now that I like you a great deal and I hope that you will come along with me, to see where this leads us.āĀ
Despite himself, Essek turns his hand over under Calebās and tentatively laces their fingers together. Heās seen him do similar things with the Nein and when Caleb doesnāt flinch he relaxes a bit. āI will trust you in this. I am also quite fond of you. Thank-you, for your words. For your trust. One day I hope to feel worthy of such a gift.āĀ
Caleb squeezes his hand and leads him back to the tent where they sit side by side wordlessly before falling asleep, still holding hands.
Sorry this is late folks, but here it is! The much anticipated dance lesson because I honestly just had to. Like I couldn't not. I used to be a dancer but I was never big into ballroom so forgive anything that's not like accurate.
