#44- Beyond the Door (Ovidio G. Assonitis and Robert Barrett; 1974)
Day 30 of VHShitfest's Horror Month
by Tim May
Beyond the Door is an Italian production of an English language feature, so of course all the dialogue is terribly ADR'd in later. This makes an otherwise decent (if derivative) horror film absolutely hysterical.
The dub is not the only thing that's odd about Beyond the Door, however. The film has an dream-like quality to it, often veering off on weird tangents, like a mother kissing her five year old son on the lips for an uncomfortable amount of time.
Beyond the Door is also, at its core, an Exorcist rip-off, as you can probably tell from the poster. A pregnant woman (the previously mentioned incestuous mother) gets possessed, you guess the rest.
The woman's two other children are fucking ridiculous. At one point, the brother is confused, and the sister starts talking like a fucking hippie, mentioning something about a "bad trip."
Beyond the Door is relatively well made, but its most entertaining moments are either too baffling to determine whether they're actually good or lifted directly from The Exorcist.
