I have always preferred the traditional church services over the modern evangelical rock' n' roll ones. I visited a few neo-evangelical style ministries prior to my salvation and was turned off by their music and weird preaching. Not a fan of Methodist churches either, but it was the Methodist church that got me interested in the old-fashioned style of worship services. I went to one for a couple of years before I believed in the gospel and all they did was sing the classic hymns, preach from the King James Bible, and fellowship with each other during the week.
They taught several strange doctrines there, and a watered down gospel, but I'm still thankful for them influencing me to stick with the old paths. Because of that, I attended an old-fashioned KJV Fundamental Baptist church when I got saved, a church that didn't get with the times refusing to switch to the progressive Christian movement. I'm grateful for that. Thank God.
The Independent Fundamentalist [Ana]Baptist movement is an extremely interesting socio-religious phenomenon. One might think that holding a penknife to a parishioner’s throat—without first having the decency to ask for audience participation—might be to exceed, a little, the bounds of acceptability. There are plenty of twitter accounts that chronicle the bizarre, silly, and evil things that IFB pastors do or say. The glory of the internet is that men of the cloth can no longer get away with the religious and psychological abuse that they could get away with in the pre-internet age. The eyes of the world are watching, and holding these shepherds to account for their bad behaviour. Men of the Cloth did not even want freedom of the press. Pope Leo X (born 1475- died 1521), sensing that a reformation was about to break out, tried to put all the presses under the Catholic Imprimātur. And in my view Leo X was one of the better Popes from an Enlightenment perspective. If Leo X could not censor the rickety presses of his day, than neither can the internet—built to outlast a nuclear winter—be censored. As much as I love Saint Pius X who reigned from 1903-1914, this is one of my criticisms of his Papacy. He ought to have known that his Quixotic “War Against Modernism” was unwinnable in an age of light-speed communication via radio and telegraph. It is the deists and enlightenment thinkers of the American Revolution that we must thank for the freedom of the press and not the clergy. And so in the religious sphere, we have good reason to be optimistic. The internet does seem to be exposing and destroying toxic and abusive religious movements like the IFB. ____ #ifb #oldpaths #religion #sociology #socialmedia #oldtimereligion #christianity #societyandculture #society Link to clip: https://twitter.com/wilkes_hayden/status/1425543875783954438?s=19 (at County Monaghan) https://www.instagram.com/p/CSfDeZ-jE-S/?utm_medium=tumblr
“Get under the spout where the glory comes out.” i.e. Get under the cross, and have the blood and water wash over you like what happened to Saint Longinus, the centurion, in Mel Gibson’s ‘The Passion of the Christ.’ Recovering Fundamentalists—which is to say: ex Independent Fundamentalist [Ana]Baptists who are taking steps leftwards towards more progressive forms of Protestant Christianity—mock this phrase to scorn and ridicule. It seems very suggestive of fellātiō—Latin for: ‘sucking’—through an improvised hole in a toilet cubicle... and perhaps even of the fetish known as a: ‘golden shower.’ In Roman Catholicism, the Asperges, or sprinkling ritual before Mass changes to: ‘Vīdī aquam ēgredientem dē templō, ā latere dextrō, allēlūia: Et omnēs ad quōs pervēnit aqua ista, salvī factī sunt, Et dīcent: allēlūia, allēlūia. ‘ ‘I saw water going out from the side of the Temple, from [its] right side. alleluia. And all to whom that water came were saved, and they shall say: “alleluia!” “alleluia!”’ According to Wikipedia this sprinkling antiphon is referring to Ezekiel 47:1 and following, and no doubt the Catholic Church sees in this a “type” or “figure” of Jesus Christ. So perhaps this Ezekielish Glory Spout, and the lance wound of Jesus Christ is where this funny fundamentalist phrase comes from! Perhaps this is the “Glory spout” to which the likes of the venerable Pastor Nathan Rager refers to from his wooden pulpit... and ehorts his congregation to get thereunder! ____ @recovering_fundamentalist #latin #latina #oldpaths https://www.instagram.com/p/CNnTtEQHK99/?igshid=8ay9slkliar0
