John is an impuslive man, so much so that there is likely nobody that knows him who could deny such a thing. He also loves dogs perhaps a bit too much. These two facts combined makes for a dangerous situation where he is very likely to adopt new dogs.
... Which is exactly what happened when a dog shelter contacted him about possibly adopting a puppy from them and becoming a patron of the organisation. John being John couldn’t resist, and soon found himself agreeing to adopt a labradoodle puppy that he decided to name River.
(as an adult)
While he was there, he took a tour of the shelter - the organisation wanting to take some photos to use as publicity, and John wanting to see all the dogs - and he stumbled upon an older mixed breed. The dog was around ten years old and was struggling to find a home, having been at the shelter for a few years with no luck in regards to his adoption. John, wanting to help, inquired about how he was with other dogs and, long story short, ended up taking him home too. Not too keen on the dog’s original name, he decided to rename him Brax - something that he believed suited him much better.
John’s in talks for a TV series based off his books. He doesn’t expect anything to come out of them any time soon, though.
John’s current writing project is a collection of short stories based in the universe he has created for the Time Shards series. They include all new content, things that he had to scrap from the original books in order to stop them from becoming too long, and stories written based on scraps of paper that he’d written notes down on years ago, lost, and then recently found again.
It’s a slow project, though. He’s still writing, but he’s relaxing while he does so.
John’s 13th book is a spin-off to the main series (the main Time Shards series having ended in Striking Twelve). The book, titled Displacement, follows a Welsh lady that is sucked through a crack in time (as seen in his previous book, Visible Cracks) while shopping in Cardiff. She finds herself on the spaceship of Captain Hades (a character from his previous books) and his right-hand man - an alien that looks like a kind of squid-human hybrid.
The book follows the characters attempting to send the woman home while simultaneously trying to protect a planet from space pirates, and ends with her deciding to stay - something that is a relief to Captain Hades because, as the reader finds out, he had been lying about being able to send her home all along.

John, being the idiot that he is, decided in early March that the best way to deal with a pack of dogs is to have a sheepdog to herd them up. Being him, he decided to do this with one of the more complicated breeds to keep.
Barbara (named because Baarbara) is an Old English Sheepdog. She’s mainly grey (black as a puppy), but has a mainly white head (with a grey patch over her left eye and ear), chest, underbelly, feel, and tail tip. She also has a brown right eye and blue left eye.

Alistair and Wilfred as adults:
Alistair is a little bit bigger and more solidly built than Wilfred, whereas Wilfred is a little more scruffy looking.
This is the approximate size difference between them and Clara:
