#oldest pub

Tucked away in the town of Athlone, Ireland, Sean’s Bar is widely considered the oldest pub in the world, with origins traced back to around 900 AD. Its claim isn’t just folklore. Archaeologists who examined the site uncovered walls made of ancient wattle and daub, dating back more than 1,100 years. Even more impressively, the bar maintains a detailed list of every owner through the centuries, offering an unbroken chain of its long and storied existence. These findings were so convincing that the Guinness Book of World Records officially recognized Sean’s Bar as the oldest pub still in operation.

Situated on the banks of the River Shannon, Sean’s Bar was more than just a watering hole. It served as a hub for travelers and merchants moving through Ireland, making it a key part of local commerce and communication. In medieval times, it was customary for inns to act as centers of community life, and Sean’s was no exception. Cafe Vlissinghe was one of my favorite places on our recent trip to Bruges.  “Probably” the oldest pub in the world, is what D’s T-shirt proclaims on the back.  Probably.  Its establishment in 1515 might well have been the most significant thing to happen that year, unless you consider France getting a new king, not named Louis, more important,   

It was charming and old and appeared to be serving mostly locals when we walked in for lunch.  Still, its fame, warranted or not, surely generates a steady tourist trade which they welcome with multi-language menus and...T-shirts.  

We were also welcomed by two small dogs who weren’t so much excited to see us as expectant.  A sign near the door instructed:  “Do not feed this dog” with a picture of the black one (not pictured.)

The Old Ferry Boat makes a reasonably good claim to being the oldest pub in Great Britain.  They have been serving fermented beverages here since the 6th century and parts of the Inn date to the 10th century. Alcohol was definitely served on the site…
