The Star Maker by Olaf Stapledon $7 Berkley Medallion Books First Printing (1969) Star Maker is a science fiction novel by Olaf Stapledon, published in 1937. The book describes a history of life in the universe, dwarfing in scale Stapledon's previous book, Last and First Men (1930), a history of the human species over two billion years. Star Maker tackles philosophical themes such as the essence of life, of birth, decay and death, and the relationship between creation and creator. A pervading theme is that of progressive unity within and between different civilizations. Some of the elements and themes briefly discussed prefigure later fiction concerning genetic engineering and alien life forms. Arthur C. Clarke considered Star Maker to be one of the finest works of science fiction ever written. The cover art is by Richard Powers. . DAY 4: Star Maker by Olaf Stapledon. So in making this list I've come to realise that my favourite genre of fiction is "Existential Crisis". Interesting. Olaf Stapledon's writing is the benchmark for giant-scale imagination. The first book by him I read was Last and First Men, in which he imagines the next two billion years of human history, our story ending with dignity on Neptune. Along the way we evolve and self select in unbelievably weird and diverse ways and it's just an incredible journey.
Well, Olaf decided that two billion years wasn't quite enough time to cover so in Star Maker he decided to tell the story of the entire lifespan of endless consecutive universes crafted by a celestial intelligence in the search of infinite perfection. Aaaaaand humanity in its entire two billion year history during which it reaches heights of science and philosophy the likes of which we can only currently dream of comprehending... yep, we're just one in an infinite varieties of unique methods of the universe observing and experiencing itself.
NOW THAT'S GOOD EXISTENTIAL CRISIS
I rate this book infinity out of 10. Highly recommended, would AAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAA WE'RE A MOTE OF DUST ACROSS THE SURFACE OF THE SUN again
“Diversity and multiplicity of worlds was as necessary on the galactic plane as diversity and multiplicity of individuals on the world plane and diversity and multiplicity of nerve-cells on the individual plane.”
Star Maker, Olaf Stapledon
