Right outside the little port shop—Gateway to Rabbit Island—there it was: the cutest manhole cover you’ve ever seen. A round metal tribute to bunny obsession, complete with a rabbit design that made us pause and go, “Awww!” Japan really doesn’t miss when it comes to adorable details—even the ground gets dressed up for the occasion.

During WWII the island of Okunoshima housed a poison gas manufacturing plant. Following the war the plant was destroyed and left abandoned. Following the closer, the rabbits held there for testing were released into the wild around the plant.
As you can tell from these photos, they have thrived.
