"Do you think I want to associate with an underground cult of feminazi wrestle-sluts?"
âItâs fascinating to see people build to peak action and then do something different,â he says. âOften times the [intensity] falls off and they are all of a sudden embarrassed or they run. They want to get out the frame as fast as possible.â (via Scream Portrait Hack Is Photo Booth on Steroids | Wired.com)
The Scream-O-Tron 3000 was set up in the Garage once. It's pretty fascinating to watch people psych themselves up for it. If you want to give it a try, your next chance is probably at Mind the Gap.

It only took them over a year...
âHe kind of cleaves to that Faulknerian view of Virginians that says weâre so interested in ourselves, we donât really have time to be too interested in you,â Boo said. âIf you like us, come on in and partake. If you donât, we couldnât care less.
C-Ville: Features - Jinx Kern's draw is deeper than the barbecue
Speaking of Jinx, I highly recommend this profile of the man and his barbecue. Also from the article:
Boo describes Jinx as âthe love child of Elmer Gantry and Atticus Finchâ and encapsulates his charm with an elegant sentence.
âHeâs this intellectual whoâs out at the rock pile drinking port, singing at the top of his voice while standing on that electric chair going up the stairs, declaiming Cicero. And then heâs this sweaty, essential alchemist who grabs bloody hunks of meat and seduces them with smoke,â she said.
Film Festival Schedule!
...is not out yet. But a while back Cville Field Notes asked me about the Festival, and I never answered. Partially because Tumblr doesn't let you respond to replies easily, but also because I didn't know where to start. So. Answer after a cut, due to nonsensical rambling.
So here's the official copy from their website:
The Virginia Film Festival is a four-day celebration of the magic of the movies featuring first-run features and timeless classics, high-profile industry insiders and up-and-coming stars, and filmmakers from throughout Virginia and beyond. Taking place every autumn at the University of Virginia in Charlottesville, the Virginia Film Festival has brought the best in contemporary and classic cinema to its audiences for nearly twenty-five years. An array of leading cultural experts lead fascinating lectures and discussions, providing unique insight into not only the world of film, but the world in which we live. A collection of special events throughout the weekend invites the entire community to dive into the art of film in exciting new ways.
So you have big movies days days/weeks/months before their releases (recent examples include Slumdog Millionaire, The Wrestler, Black Swan, 127 Hours). They now also screen an episode of a critically acclaimed television show and have creators discuss it (True Blood and Breaking Bad, so far). Big names who have come include Morgan Freeman, Matthew Broderick, Peter Bogdanovich, John Waters, the voice of Belle from Beauty and the Beast⌠and tons more who I am blanking on. They screen student films from high schoolers, have video installations from UVA students⌠And even more fun and bizarre stuff. A few years back they played the Orson Wells War of the Worlds broadcast inside the McCormick Observatory on its 75th anniversary, and they had the telescope working so you could check for the Martians while you listened. One year there was a water theme so they played movies in the AFC pool. The Adrenaline Film Project also takes place over the weekend, where teams have 72 hours to create an entire film, and then they're screened and given prizes Saturday night.Â
I take off work and end up seeing around 14 movies in a weekend. I jump from theater to theater, run from UVA to the Paramount and back in an afternoon... For three and a half days the entire town is taken over by movies and the people who love them, and it is fantastic.
And end rant. But on a final note, Make Believe is playing at the Paramount this Saturday, and if you're not leaving town for Festy, it is really worth a look. It played last year at the festival and is just such a fun and good natured film. Check it out!
