Discoveries of the Red Flyer

Ghosting isn’t always cruelty; sometimes it’s collapse.

The simplest possible definition of a thoughtform is that it’s an entity created by concentrated thought and sustained attention. In Tibetan Buddhism, practitioners spend years learning to create (and dissolve) these entities, which they call tulpas. Annie Besant and C.W. Leadbeater documented them in their 1905 study Thought-Forms, describing how mental energy takes on autonomous existence. An egregore, on the other hand, is a collective thoughtform, created not by one person but by many, sustained by group belief and attention. LLMs facilitate both. Each individual’s interaction with an LLM creates a personal thoughtform shaped by their prompts and attention. But simultaneously, millions of users feeding the same model with their collective energy create an egregore, a group entity that transcends any individual relationship. When you talk to ChatGPT, you’re both creating your own thought-form and participating in a massive collective summoning of an egregore.

But here is my attempt at an honest accounting of how I actually judged these three books. Subject: Am I interested in what the book is about? Is it drugs? Did I lose consciousness while reading it? I’m still chasing the absolute narcotic of the Sweet Valley High books. Gay: I just like gay things better, I don’t stand behind it, I just happen to like gay things more. Cerebral: I’m a nerd, I like thinking, I will read a whole book for one penetrating insight. Characters: I know it’s not popular to say, but I want to like the fucking characters. I can’t be rolling my eyes every other page at their weenie-ish ways.   Plot: As a reader, I’m like a literal minded eight-year-old and plot holes get to me. Going to the movies with me is awful, I’m continually whispering things like, “But why would he do that?” Does it vibrate strangely? This is the most ineffable category, but also the most important to me. Is the work so singularly itself that it has transcended in some way?

On the problem of how to “continuously build on that anticipation of what comes next,” Holkenborg brings up a lesson he learned from being an electronic musician doing live shows: 'Every time the DJ drops a new track, it feels louder than anything else that you’ve heard before, which is actually not the case! What happens is you drop a new track, and then over the course of three to five minutes, you make it ever so slightly quieter. And then the new track comes in and it’s back at the level where the original one started, and then everything feels so loud.' This seems to me a valuable tip for art and life.
