The show is griving Gemma as much as Mark is and we should be too, because I doubt she'll be coming back.
Did you see the exerpts from Gemmas book about Kit Connor and how he was called a queerbaiter and forced out of the closet. Very pointed. She said " whenever someone uses a label for themselves it can be empowering, but nobody "owes" us a label. They should be offered not demanded." Reminds me of harry saying his sexuality "is my personal experience, is mine."

I hadn't seen that excerpt anon. But I don't really make much of it - I don't think we can know whether an excerpt is pointed without seeing the wider context.
Also I think it really doesn't help our understanding of what Harry and hasn't said about his sexuality if people put quote marks around things that are not actually quotes. I thought that quote sounded off - and Harry had never been that direct. What he's quoted as saying is: "I've been really open with it with my friends, but that's my personal experience; it's mine." We don't know what he was responding to - the exact framing of the conversation - and it matters.
The extracts did make me worry that her book is going to be pretty banal. Which is what I was expecting, but still. I sometimes think Gemma Styles has been cursed. She's someone who is interested in writing and has some skill in writing - but the very thing that has brought her an audience, also makes it unsafe for her to say anything substantial or interesting.
I have nothing against Lottie, make your money girl while you can because the insta fame/money won’t be a guaranteed ride forever…, but I also find a lot of her projects not very authentic and more about making the most money . she’s dropped the ball on her tanning brand and barely promotes it anymore which is the opposite for genuine founders of companies, most are constantly shouting out their products to promote them 24/7. I think with Gemma she gives so little personal info about herself (which I actually find refreshing in a sea of over sharing every damn life detail) ….but her sunglass line also felt like a money grab to me that doesn’t have the heart behind it. I feel like alot of influencers who have brands have this mindset that if you have millions of followers, it will automatically equal to loads of money but that’s not the case. More and more people are being turned off by influencer culture because it’s oversaturated…so in order to stand out you have to be innovative and bring something unique to the table or people won’t buy what you’re trying to sell. Obviously this is all just my thoughts, not bashing any of them because like I said …make that money while people are still paying attention . But I am also going to be a critical consumer of every influencer trying to sell me something because so much of it is frankly a facade.
I think everything about influencing is terrifying and dystopian in its totality. Its bad for people who watch the content, for people who make the content and for us all. I think both Gemma and Lottie promote horrible lies that will make the world worse as core part of their influencing (greenwashing and making people feel worse so they'll buy beauty products).
I don't think making the world worse in some way is limited to influencers - it is unfortunate a part of a significant proportion of jobs under capitalism. What I think is particularly awful about influencing is the fact that it demands you not just to do terrible things - but be those things. (There's a whole other aspect of the exploitative nature of the industry around it - and Get Rich or Lie Trying by Symeon Brown is a really interesting exploration of that for all those who are interested).
But I think you're coming from a slightly different place anon - because you seem to focus on how well they're doing as influencers (something that I couldn't care less about), and then also authenticity.
In some ways I disagree with you about what makes things authentic. It was always really clear that Lottie's role in Tanologist was marketing. She's not an owner (the ownership structure is public knowledge) and wouldn't have anything to contribute to product development. But it's not inauthentic to lose interest in something!
More importantly - I hope that Gemma and Lottie and all other influencers are inauthentic in their social media posting that they do for money. The alternative is that they have allowed themselves to be entirely shaped by what would be most effective selling to people - which is much, much worse.
Finally I'm super unsure about the framing of a 'critical consumer' as something you could either be or not be. But I think it's really important to understand that influencing is all a facade - and it has to be.
The Hitchhikers Guide to the Galaxy is infinitely quotable and applicable to life.

"Earnest" really describes Gemma well imo. I also think she wants to do good, but the greenwashing is just making me crazy - like the car ad or the "let's stop buying clothes for one month" (it's not a challenge, but a necessity for most people, Gemma). Still, it must be hell to be Harry Styles' sister and, as she herself says, have psychogical problems. I feel for her, but maybe a job selling stuff (mainly to his fans? Idk) on social media is not the best choice here.
Anon 2: I listen to her podcast sometimes and I actually find it very entertaining
*******
I really feel for Gemma for a number of reasons. I think she was at a particularly difficult age for her brother to become Harry Styles. Old enough to be fully aware of everything, but not yet built any of the structures and personality.
One of the things that I think is fascinating, if very cruel, about being Harry's sister is that it seems to have opened lots of opportunities for her, but ensured she couldn't actually use them. She's a good writer, but she doesn't often say anything. I think the influencing is a bit of a double bind, particularly if anxiety has got in the way of her doing more regular work, 4 million instagram followers gives real options. But it also makes demands.
Anyway - she's still super young, she has lots of good elements of her life from the look of it, and there's plenty of time to build in other things she might need. (And given that the wisest way for her to build anything woudl be out of our eyes - she might be doing all sorts of things.
Anon 2 - I like her podcast when I like her guests, but some are people who really annoy me. I also find there's something about 'here is someone who would be a good influence' that wants me to tear them limb from limb. But I accept that's just me.
I wasn't that surprised - while I think she's completely lacking of any analysis of power and that means she ends up greenwashing
Could you elaborate on that?
Just follow her Instagram! Her main income seems to be greenwashing influencing - selling products that do immeasurable harm as environmentally friendly.
Hi, I’ve come across this post of your from a few weeks ago where you said you find Gemma boring for interesting reasons 💀 that made me chuckle cause I think the same
Thanks anon - it's a Douglas Adams quote that I really love (I can quote most of Dirk Gently's Holistic Detective Agency - I used to have the audiobook on tape).
And is very pertinent to Gemma - the thing that has brought her an audience is the same thing that will prevent her from ever saying anything interesting or true. It's quite the curse.
