First time I write any Hiveswap characters and it's not Cirava, truly we're all shocked.

Listen if you haven’t played this game yet you should. Yes, even during an actual pandemic, yes it’s cathartic, yes it helps put things into perspective.

So yeah, this whole thing is a strategy game where you try to infect and eradicate all of humanity. You can be a virus, fungus, and more. There’s even a vampire and simian mode. You spend DNA points to mutate your disease, choosing symptoms and resistances, and sometimes they can even mutate symptoms on their own.

Humanity of course is going to try to fight back by trying to stop the spread and find a cure. The more severe the symptoms the harder they’ll try, but the more severe the symptoms the harder it can be for them to work so there are a lot of different ways to reach victory.

Also the developer donated $250k to fighting COVID-19. That’s right, this small video game developer has done more to help stop the pandemic than the goddamn billionaires polluting this world.

Yesterday I started with the classic Plants vs Zombies

Look at this gorgeous loading screen. There’s so much attention and life to it. You can see all the love put into a game that’s really just a fun little spoof, but the jokes never outlive their welcome. Even over a decade of existing.

I played this when it was originally a free game on pop caps. Then later I got the special edition with a zombie figurine (I got the disco zombie because that cat is groovy). I’ve played this damn game thousands of miles in the air. I’m writing this the day after because I spent six hours straight playing last night until finally dragging myself to bed about 2am. It’s good.

In essence it’s a pretty simple game, easy to pick up and figure out. You plant things to defend your home from the zombies trying to come eat your brains. It can really ramp up in difficulty, however, especially on the goddamn night levels. It never feels unfair, though, it’s so well balanced. There’s also a vast variety of plants to choose from and zombies attacking. For a little game like this there’s so much variety, even in levels where you’re not staying in just one single map for the duration. A lot of modern games could take note.

Also there’s variety in game play with mini games to unlock, endless modes, and puzzle mode. 

There’s something really disturbing about a zombie wearing the pea pod head. Unnatural.

But yeah, there’s a lot here to enjoy. If somehow you’ve never checked this out I highly recommend it. Right now it’s only 1.99$ on steam, and usually it’s only 4.99$ so even if you miss the sale it’s still a really good price.
