I've just finished reading the biography of Arthur Conan Doyle and the further amusing highlights:
- When he was working as a surgeon on the whaling ship the crew went on the ice to hunt seals but the captain ordered him to stay on board the ship because he was inexperienced on the ice and would probably fall in the water. So he stayed on the ship, and then fell overboard.
- He tried to devise a method of shooting men concealed behind rocks but nearly killed someone in his experiments.
- On holiday in Norway he had picked up some Norwegian along the way and liked to show off with it wherever he could. The group hired pony-drawn single-person carriages to take them up to a rest-house. At lunch Doyle got into a conversation with a Norwegian officer who turned up and talked with him about (so he thought) a relation of the man's who had hurt his leg. Then after the officer left, the group went outside and Doyle's carriage was there but his pony had vanished. It turns out Doyle had unintentionally told the officer to take his pony to replace his lame one and had managed to repeatedly assure the man that it was his pleasure to lend it.
