Meeting them here isn’t what he planned to do when he came into the city. It isn’t. However, it’s what’s happened, and he can’t do anything about it --- just like they can’t do anything about it. There’s no need for him to try to explain himself, for him to go into detail about why he’d chosen to come to this particular place, so close to where they live. It’s obvious that he’s just doing what he can to get by, that he’s here only because he knows it well. It’s been a month since they broke up, and he knows that was all his fault, but he still doesn’t hesitate in the way he raises his eyes to look at them and then ducks his head back down again a moment later. It takes him some time to find the words to say, but find them he does.
“I’m sorry. I didn’t know you’d be here today.” It’s easy for him to be soft with them, to be gentle. It’s easy for him to have regrets when it comes to what he did to them. That’s a new feeling for him, one that he hasn’t really experienced. // @ofsonatines.
