You’ve got to be kidding me.
The thought echoed in Ward’s mind, the incredulity in the sentiment strong enough to push what was supposed to be a mere internal complaint through his throat, past his open mouth, to be spoken aloud without him realizing.
❝ I don’t need to pretend to be dating anyone to get a role. I studied at Yale in order to get roles because of what I can do in front of a camera, not because of what I can pretend my personal life is like. ❞
Even though the string of words ended up sounding snotty and arrogant, Ward didn’t really care. Not when he was merely speaking the truth. Ever since he could remember, since he was a little boy, joining school plays and performances during town celebrations, he’d wanted to be an actor. And just recently, he’d come to find this one role that could be his golden ticket into guaranteeing he’d be able to do what he loved—acting—for a long time. And to hear, a week later, that in order to get the role, he’d have to pretend to date a co-prospect, was not a good start at all. That said, even though he knew his and his co-passenger in this crazy train ride’s agents were merely trying to help, he couldn’t avoid thinking that this was somehow a form of exploitation. Exploitation of their private lives, to be more specific; something he did not want to be a part of.
❝ What about you? You can’t tell me you’re actually agreeing to this. ❞
Head whipping to gaze at Skye’s direction, he spoke to her with a tone that was tainted with a combination of irritated and pleading. Irritated because he did not want to play a part in this insanity; and pleading because he needed her to share the same sentiments he had. At least with the two of them agreeing that this was a stupid idea, maybe their agents would just think of a different one. His whiskey-colored eyes bore into hers as if telling her without words…
Don’t you dare agree to this…
