   HE SPENDS MOST OF HIS TIME doubting his parenting abilities. itâs not that zahid is a bad father, far from it really â heâs present, responsible, caring, and yet the struggle of being all alone with a 4 year old wears him down. all alone might be an exaggeration though, because arifâs mother had had the decency to stay for his first few months ( though that was probably due to fatigue more than anything else ), and a year after zahidâs new girlfriend had stepped into the picture. losing her had been way harder than losing arifâs mom, maybe especially for arif himself.
   so hard, in fact, that the kid had cried for days on end until zahid had begged his ex to come back â for the sake of the boy, of course. still, zahid finds some solace in not being alone, and her frequent visits have made days â and nights â  considerably easier.
    i apologize for demanding your presence like this,  he says bashfully, cleaning off the table after dinner, arif sound asleep in his bed.   he barely sleeps when youâre away,  which, naturally, has been quite a lot lately, the way it should be between exes. Â
