And so...after an almost two month long hiatus...ONWARD FAN ART FRIDAY IS FINALLY BACK!!! 🎨 🖌 🎉

Anyways...

Who doesn’t love the idea of a pet dragon?!?!? Aside from catching things on fire at any given moment, it would be so cool! 😍

So for the grand return of my Onward fan art showcase, I present to thee the Lightfoots' lovable energetic pet dragon, Blazey!

If I could name any character from the film that I wish had more screen time it would most definitely be her...a loyal friend in times of need, always ready to share her love to those who need it or even don't need it lol, and with a great knack for tracking things like Phoenix Gems and the scent of her owners, I'd even go as far as saying she's the glue that keeps the Lightfoot family together!

A bringer of liveliness and excitement to the room, here are 10 artists' 10 different versions of our beloved Blazey!

Theme: Young Ian and Barley

This theme was sort of a long time coming lol, as far back as I got the Art of Onward book at least (so almost a month ago?), but yeah!! For tonight's edition of fanart-sharing and shout-outing, I give you our favorite elf bros as kids!

Here's a fun fact for you, Quest Masters: this summer I've been watching the deleted scenes more often than I did when they first came out, and the first one "Unstoppable" I have to say I've watched at least 10 times now! I love every single one of the Onward deleted scenes but there's something about young Ian and Barley that just gives me serotonin to the point where I skyrocket!

I mean, they're already precious as teenagers...but as kids?! AHHHHHHH! CUE MY DYING OF CUTENESS! 🥰

So let us go back in time (but not too far! this isn't a trip to the times of yore! lol) and turn on our heart eyes for all the little Ian and Barleys these artists have made below! 😍

izzlebeanie - this drawing is absolutely FULL of love and care! Barley's tender smile, him cuddling a sweepy baby Ian, and Ian himself being fully asleep and relaxed in his big bro's arms! aw man this entire picture makes me want to ugly cry! 😭

demico_art - baby Ian is heavy, but young Barley's smile says he doesn't care! He loves his little bro more than anything and will do anything for him! I love the overall brightness of this piece! and the detail in their hair is just amazing too!

amykleinhansillustration - what an amazingly pretty light show this piece is! quite literally since Barley is lighting up the room and appears to being putting on a show for his little brother! the whole picture just gives me all warm and cozy feels and speaks great entertainment from the pillows to the coloring book!

the_modern_ghost - awwwww when I look at this piece, and see Ian hugging his older bro from behind, I see him thanking Barley for doing something fun with him. The fact that "I never had a dad, but I always had you" is also written here certainly helps with that!

weevmo - I almost see this as a counterclockwise progression of baby Ian warming up to his big bro! but what I also see is Barley's love for his baby bro being undeniable! it shows really well here! also the color and line detail? *chef's kiss*

_vilusivi_ - the light and shadow here is so well done! young Ian biking towards the sunlight? a sure sign of hope that he won't fall! and Barley's confident smile as he watches? very endearing! I'm rooting for them both in this piece!

hannahdrawnings - this one's so fun! Ian and Barley celebrating Day of the Dead? Awesome! and honoring Wilden? that's absolutely sweet! they even have a papel picado on their altar! The whole drawing is just so cute!

cheezysqueaks - "Magic! Magic! Make the Luxo Ball fly!" lol, I told you I've watched this deleted scene about 10 times! anyway I love how colorful this piece is, like it's super colorful and pretty! The shine in the boys' eyes, the night sky...it's all so beautiful!

cherry_grenade_ - this piece tells a story and I love it! I always adore the concept of young Barley showing/teaching young Ian things! I also just really love how both boys have gaps in their teeth if you look closely, if that doesn't speak childhood I don't know what does!

and who better at being chaos than our very own Barley? Or rather Barley just being Barley? Or better yet...Barley rockin' out?!

Barley is, without a doubt, a rock star! from being an amazing and protective older brother/father figure to his baby bro, Ian to putting himself out there and not being afraid to be him! so here's a fanart collection of Barley showing off his awesome and lovable Barley energy! 🤘

and yes, I had planned to share this post last week, but as I said earlier I wanted to find more art for this particular theme, which luckily I was able to do! it's just too good!! so here's what I originally had in mind for last Friday—right here, right now 😉

jamie_phut - "on the guitar, Barley Lightfoot!" a taste of young Barley to kick things off! this redraw of him from the deleted scene is very well done! so cute and colorful! I love it!

starlight_crafter - this was drawn all the way back in 2019 right after the teaser trailer came out! I really like the style of this pencil drawing and even though we weren't sure what to expect of Barley yet at the time, this artist captures him and his vibe brilliantly!

cheesembs - I love the simple use of colors here and Barley's expression!! he really looks like he's into what he's playing here! this whole picture just makes me smile

cgbkart - ahhhh air guitar!!! this piece has such fun energy! and perfectly encapsulates one of Barley's many rules of questing: use what you've got. if there ain't no guitar or radio to make music, do it yourself!

umutciplak - I love how endearingly goofy Barley's smile is in this drawing! while also giving off the metal horns on both hands! to me it says: "it's all good, bro!" also his many pins are incorporated very nicely too!

van_thuart - I would hope that this would be the thumbnail for a potential hours long onward lo-fi music video because I'm getting those vibes with this drawing and its peaceful purple background specifically!

coma.troversy / @comatroversy - YEAH!!! that's just what I hear Barley yelling out when I see this piece. Cheering for his brother, listening and dancing to a banger track, accomplishing a heroic deed, you name it! there's so much personality here!

magnetoburrito / @magneto-burrito - ngl I really love seeing Barley in a sweatshirt! and yes I agree, he probably would listen to the band, Rush! I love how happy and chill he is in all of these drawings!

rustedbelt - I never really thought about Barley playing music on an acoustic guitar before but this is a very cool idea! he looks so at peace and relaxed strumming it here in this piece, it's very soothing!

Quest Masters of Tumblr! I present to thee Onward fanart straight from Instagram that I personally have not seen in a very VERY long time (close to two years it would seem...) that I believe deserve more visibility!

We all know Onward is a film that deserves more attention and we've been fighting for its attention just about every day since COVID came along and screwed things up. But as it turns out, we really aren't the only ones who believe this film needs more and deserves more...

I spent about the last week and a half just going through everything, and I mean EVERYTHING, in my Onward album on Instagram from when it first came out to its anniversary last year, and doing that I came across some pieces where I looked at them and realized, "hey I think the only time I've ever seen this artwork was when I first saved it, and yet...it feels like I'm seeing this art for the first time, it's soooooooo amazing!"

And from there I just started going through and picking out art that I really have not seen like EVER and saved the links to each piece in my notes which you could probably imagine got hella long, which it did! And I did that with the intention of making sure these artworks don't stay buried forever

So I figured I'd start this potential series of sharing fan art that just isn't seen a whole lot and share them here. And I want to start it off by sharing art of Ian AND Barley seeing as we're still kinda steaming at the fact that Barley isn't in Mirrorverse with Ian and that the brothers really should be together

And by all means if anyone else wants to do this too, share overlooked fan art, nothing is stopping you! Go for it! There's probably a ton of Onward art I haven't saved and by extent, haven't seen either!

But for now, I hope you enjoy this collection! Theme: Post-It / Lunch Note Art

Seeing as school seems to be back in session for most people nowadays, this week's Onward fanart post shall focus on art in which school-related canvas are used!

Post-it notes, napkins, flashcards, paper lunch bags...all these items are things one would typically use for school, right? I mean you'd think, oh! post-it notes for giving yourself reminders or...flashcards to use to help you study for a test, napkins to clean your hands with, and paper lunch bags to hold your lunch in...

Well...all of the following 8 artists below chose to cleverly and creatively use those things for much more than that... 😉

enri_tsuno_pictures - as someone who's been doing practice sketches on flashcards herself lately, I'm first just gonna say that I relate to this piece a lot lol, but I also really love the style of Ian and Barley too! They're both soooooo cute! And I especially enjoy the way they colored them in, with color but also in adding detail!

sandwichbagadventure - this one's pretty unique because this artist drew either themselves or their kid as Ian, but it's very sweet! It's very clear to me that they love Onward in this household and that they see Ian as a hero which is really REALLY great to see! Also that's a very cute turtle in the bottom left corner! 🐢

daedally_done - can't get enough of the manticore after last week? Well here she is again! this artist's canvas was a napkin! Certainty not an easy texture to work with—thin, bumpy, see-through—so I commend whoever drew this for taking on that challenge and for utilizing one of Barley's special questing rules: using what you've got! I also love the use of only black and red pen here! it helps in giving a very clear, recognizable picture of Corey!

ladybagman - this one's actually two for the price of one because this artist has two kids! And they used two different art styles for both bags which is cool! The one on the left is absolutely adorable! I love the expressions on both the bros! And Ian's eyes and smile are just precious on the bag on the right! Also, for context, "te amo" is Spanish for "I love you", awwwww 🥹

ktrosemary - an awesome pencil drawing of Barley on a post-it note! Very nice use of shadow under his chin and above his eyes! I also really like how this artist used a variety of tones with their pencil to create different shades of black and gray!

alc_artchive - I love how the artist of his paper lunch bag used BOTH sides of the bag to draw and include Ian AND Barley. That's the great thing about paper lunch bags, they're three dimensional! So art doesn't only have to be limited to one side! Also LOVE how they used the Onward font to spell out their daughter's name!

davestl - I really love the way this artist colored Laurel's hair! It's colored pencil, but not filling it in completely with colored pencil gives off a really nice textured effect! The whole drawing is very well textured, actually...Laurel's skin looks phenomenal too! But her hair is probably my favorite part of this whole post-it note art, there's something about it that just shines! 😍
