SAVING LIVES: Jamaica’s Minister of Labour and Social Security [and Southeast Clarendon MP] Pearnel Charles Jr. said the country is taking every effort to “save lives” ahead of Hurricane Melissa’s worst impacts. Residents on the south-central part of the island are being told to seek higher ground.
Residents of south-central areas are being told to seek higher ground, many of which can be found in designated evacuation centres. The critical parishes are: St. Mary, Portland, St. Thomas, Kingston and St. Andrew, St. Catherine, Clarendon, Manchester, St. Elizabeth, Westmoreland and Hanover. So, most of the country.
When evacuating, secure government ID documents in water proof containers to make relief distribution more efficient.
Charles claims the US and its NGO’s as reliable partners; that is not true. The US, under Trump, is randomly murdering Caribbean people at sea.
On the evacuation centres/shelters:
Over 881 Shelters on Standby – Jamaica Information Service
More than 881 shelters are on standby across Jamaica to accommodate persons during and after the passage of Tropical Storm Melissa.
He said that special attention is being given to critical parishes that are expected to be more affected by the storm based on its projected path, and there may be need for evacuations.
These parishes are St. Mary, Portland, St. Thomas, Kingston and St. Andrew, St. Catherine, Clarendon, Manchester, St. Elizabeth, Westmoreland and Hanover.
He noted that focus is being placed on areas within these critical parishes that tend to experience high levels of flooding during heavy rainfall.
Among these are Shooters Hill, Weaves Road in Bull Bay, sections of Cane River, and Eleven Miles in Kingston and St. Andrew; Grant’s Pen in Yallahs and Audley Crossing in St. Thomas; and Portland Cottage and Rocky Point in Clarendon.
