overall, she has a healthy relationship with her mom. or at least, she’d define it as such, if asked. it’s a little more complicated, i think. udyati loves her mom, and she knows her mom loves her. but their relationship is strained. 

udyati doesn’t know many things about her dad; just his name - dinesh - and his general appearance. but during one of her more vulnerable moments, her mom let it slip that udyati inherited the majority of his personality traits and his powers too. so from that point on, it really hit home for her that every single time her mom looks at her, she sees the man she loved - the man who she still loves so very much - reflected back at her. 

dinesh broke her mom’s heart in a thousand little pieces, and while udyati tries to be as sweet and compassionate and forgiving as possible, she’s really good at holding a grudge. she holds one against her dad, even to this day. she holds a grudge against him for breaking her mom’s heart, and for leaving, too.

(she’s unsure whether or not she’d like to see him, someday. he’s out there somewhere, in the universe. he has to be. she’s stubborn, like her mom.)

because sure, her mom might be too honest for her own good and she might say stuff that hurts udyati from time to time, but she knows that her mom’s heart is in the right place regardless. it comes from a place of kindness. it’s all tough love and wanting her kid to be prepared for the world out there, for it’s a rough one. because that’s all her mom’s ever known; she was raised with a firm hand, and now she’s raising her own kid much the same way. and she’s working very, very hard to provide for her only daughter.

i did headcanon that she had other relatives once - like maternal grandparents - but i scrapped them. i think it’s important for the story that it’s just them with no other relatives to speak of. a little team against the world. they’re like the gilmore girls except they’re not rich nor white. i feel like they’d be like georgia and ginny, if ginny was less guarded and if georgia wasn’t as lenient.

though i have to add: as much of a hardass as ankita can be, she also has a great capacity for kindness and love. she takes in meilin chang, one of her daughter’s friends, without question. meilin often spends the night because of her own home situation. she offers comfort and advice to skyler when she’s there to do so, and when he needs it. she keeps her eye on daisuke; she often checks in with xiomara and with xiomara’s parents.

in a way, her childhood best friends became not only udyati’s family, but also ankita’s. and because udyati sees them a lot, ankita sees them a lot. when she’s home at the same time as her daughter, that is.
