A full nightâs sleep is a concept foreign to Akutagawa.
The longer Akutagawa spends asleep, the longer heâs vulnerable. Â Even if he only sleeps in his apartment with the door locked, thatâs no guarantee of safety. Â He hasnât slept in the same room as anyone else since leaving the orphanage, and he only allows himself a few hours of rest at a time. Â If it were possible, he wouldnât sleep at all.
Heâs learned to function on three hours of sleep. Â It isnât a detriment to his efficiency. Â It certainly wonât cause him to pass out during a mission, or anything as ridiculous as that.
So when Akutagawa opens his eyes and realizes that his head is on something warmer than his pillow, alarm filters through disorientation near instantly. Â He sits bolt upright, taking in his surroundings. Â If an enemy knocked him out-
âGood morning.â Â Oda, sitting on a park bench, shows no signs of concern. Â âDid you sleep well?â
Before Akutagawa can begin to answer that, he needs a second to process the situation. Â He was sleeping next to Oda? Â No, given the position he was in, he had to have had his head in Odaâs lap.
âWhat happened?â Â Of course something had to have happened for him to end up like this. Â Thereâs no way he would have slept on Oda just as a matter of course. Â Maybe an Ability userâs attack-
âAfter we finished training, you fell asleep on me. Â I didnât want to wake you, so I stayed here.â
They were training in the afternoon, but the sun has already set.  Oda canât possibly have sat still while Akutagawa napped on him for hours⊠no, because itâs Oda, Akutagawa can absolutely believe he stayed in the same spot just to avoid waking him.  No one else would have even tried.
If it were anyone other than Oda, Akutagawa wouldnât have believed he could let his guard down enough to fall asleep on them.  Though⊠ âYou should have attacked.  The enemy wouldnât pass up an opportunity to strike while I was vulnerable.â
âI know,â Oda replies. Â âBut you seemed like you needed the rest.â
Akutagawa almost scoffs and says that he functions perfectly well on his standard schedule, before he realizes that he feels more refreshed than heâs been in months. Â With this much energy, he could fight the Guild single-handedly, or survive entertaining Odaâs children for two days straight.
He hates to concede a point, but his lack of sleep might possibly have been affecting him a tiny bit more than he realized.
âBesides.â Â Oda smiles softly. Â âYouâre cute while youâre asleep, so I donât think I could have attacked you even if I wanted to.â
The fact that Akutagawaâs cheeks flame red is solely because of improved blood flow after his nap. Â Thatâs a plausible reason. Â Embarrassment over Oda calling him âcuteâ has nothing to do with it.
Akutagawa turns away, as if Oda hadnât already gotten a good look at his blush. Â âDonât be ridiculous.â
âIâm not.â  Oda tilts his head a little.  âMaybe I should have taken a picture so I could show you laterâŠâ
âI will never let my guard down around you again.â Â Akutagawa huffs. Â âThis should never have happened to begin with and we will not discuss it.â
Two weeks later, Akutagawa wakes up with his head on Odaâs lap and Odaâs hand in his hair. Â He splutters and pulls away as quickly as humanly possible.
The photo Oda took of him isnât âcuteâ, itâs just his sleeping face. Â Peaceful, but not cute. Â Something must be wrong with Oda.
Summary:Â Akutagawa doesn't have a crush on Oda, and if he did he wouldn't have a problem confessing it.
âThis is the only world where he lives and writes a novel.â
Akutagawa keeps a copy of Odaâs novel in his room. Â Now and then he takes it out just to thumb through: the novel this world was made for. Â Youâd never guess just by the cover.
âŠNo, thatâs not right.  The smile Oda has when someone praises his book or talks about what it meant to them is the smile this world was made for.  Akutagawa can hardly disagree with Dazaiâs choices, at least when it comes to doing whatever he could to protect that smile.  (The rest of his decisions, especially when they involve Gin, are still up for scrutiny.)
They donât talk about Dazai.  Akutagawa isnât sure he could discuss him without bringing up the Book or lying, and he canât lie to Oda.  Without OdaâŠ
Perhaps the Akutagawa of the outside world is happier, more fulfilled in the mafia without the struggle of going against his nature and trying to be human. Â But this Akutagawa can say with certainty that Oda is the best thing that could have ever happened to him.
Not that he would say that out loud. Â Atsushi would never let him live it down. Â If heâd known getting along with Atsushi more would mean Atsushi ribbing him about his âcrushâ, he might have killed him back then rather than suffer the embarrassment.
He doesnât have a crush. Â Anyone would be grateful to the person who saved their life, and heâs used to Odaâs company more than most peopleâs so of course he seeks it out over everyone elseâs. Â Thereâs nothing romantic or sexual in saying that Oda is handsome; it just means Akutagawa has eyes.
âSaying that just makes you more obvious.â Â Atsushi wears a too-sweet smile that immediately has Akutagawaâs guard up. Â âYou really should tell him one of these days.â
âThereâs nothing to tell.â Â Akutagawa glares at his desk rather than look directly at Atsushi. Â âEven if there was, it would be pointless, because he doesnât share those hypothetical feelings.â
âHe spends more time with you than anyone else in the agency.â
âOur relationship is different from our coworkers. Â That doesnât mean itâs romantic in nature.â
âHe learned how to make fig cake after overhearing you mention liking figs once.â
It was delicious, even more so because Akutagawa hadnât been expecting the gift. Â âHeâs a generous person who enjoys doing things for others. Â If he had romantic feelings, he would have made it clear by now, considering how âobviousâ my supposed feelings are.â
Atsushi raises an eyebrow.  âUm, I donât mean any offense to him, but⊠weâre talking about the same Oda, right?â
âŠLess than two days ago it was revealed that Oda wasnât sure if Kenji considered him a friend, despite Oda having known him for the better part of a year and Kenji considering the majority of the city his friends.  Thereâs no way Akutagawa can argue that Oda isnât dense.
He slumps his head against his pile of paperwork. Â Atsushi gently pats him on the shoulder.
Itâs not surprising that Odaâs answer when Akutagawa texts to ask where he is is âthe docksâ. Â Oda has two favorite haunts: the library and anywhere he can see the sea.
When Akutagawa finds him, heâs sitting at the end of a pier, legs dangling off the side. Â He looks up as Akutagawa takes a seat next to him.
âNeed something?â Oda asks.
ââŠNo.  I just felt like seeing you.â  Itâs not as hard to admit as it used to be.
Oda accepts that with a soft smile, then turns his gaze back to the ocean. Â Water stretches out past the horizon, and Akutagawa imagines it going on until confined by the pages of the Book.
If this world broke down, would it all end in an instant? Â Or would he watch the sky crack open and the ocean tear apart?
âOda. Â If the world were ending, what would you do in the time you had left?â
After a momentâs thought, Oda replies, âIt depends on how much time I had.â
âSuppose you have an hour.â Â Thatâs generous for a world ending, but itâs not as though he asks the question expecting it to happen. Â Heâll do everything in his power to keep the Book and this world safe.
âAn hour⊠ Iâd want to say goodbye to the children.â
Akutagawa nods. Â âI thought youâd want to spend your last moments with them.â Â Itâs not a disappointing answer, because he would have had to have been expecting something else to be let down.
Oda shakes his head. Â âIâd say goodbye, but Iâd spend the end of the world with you.â
That makes Akutagawaâs eyes widen and cheeks flush pink.  ââŠYou would?â
âYouâve been alone for long enough,â Oda says. Â âI canât think of anything Iâd rather be doing than holding your hand.â
On impulse, Akutagawa grabs one of Odaâs hands resting on the pier. Â After a moment, Oda turns his hand around to hold Akutagawaâs properly.
âWhat would you do?â Oda asks. Â âWith an hour left.â
Akutagawa swallows.  He knows what he wants to say, but he doesnât know how to say it.  ââŠThe hand-holding is a good idea.  I donât have any complaints.â
Oda squeezes his hand a little. Â âThatâs good to know.â Â And he looks back over the ocean again.
Of course Oda wonât push for more than that. Â He never pushes, always letting Akutagawa grow at his own pace. Â He just provides the direction. Â Akutagawa has always been battling himself and overcoming his weaknesses, and this isnât any different.
ââŠThere is one other matter.â  Akutagawaâs voice sounds raspier than normal, or maybe heâs only imagining it in his nervousness.  âIf the world was going to end, I would want to clear something up with someone first.â
âIs it someone I know?â Oda asks, turning back.
âItâs someone you know well⊠perhaps not as well as you should.â  No matter how many virtues Akutagawa and the rest of the agency recognize in Oda, heâll never acknowledge them in himself.  Thatâs just the kind of person Oda is, and itâs that kind of person that AkutagawaâŠ
Akutagawa leans in to peck Oda lightly on the cheek, then pulls back, his face burning. Â âThatâs what I wanted to clear up - of course it doesnât need to change anything between us, and you can forget I ever did such a thing, in fact I would prefer if you did-â
âAkutagawa.â Â Odaâs free hand resting on Akutagawaâs cheek quiets his nervous rambling. Â He doesnât say anything else, only leans in to gently kiss Akutagawaâs lips, soft and slow and everything Akutagawa imagined it might be. Â Akutagawa freezes for a second before melting into the kiss.
The world isnât ending, not yet. Â Sharing his feelings with Oda without the time limit hanging above them was a much better plan than waiting until the last second to confess.
