Boss OD-3, repair and a mod. The input jack was broken on this and needed to be replaced -- no big deal. This is my first encounter with one of these pedals (if you remember, I answered a question recently from someone who was less than pleased with theirs). After playing with it, I think it’s killer. I have nothing bad to say about it at all, not to mention what a great value it is for the money. As will become clear below, it’s not remotely in the same category as all the various Tubescreamer-style pedals, because it contains in miniature the distortion-generating topology of a classic amp. As such it’s very refined and self-contained, and doesn’t depend on an overdriven amp to cover its shortcomings. It’s like my modified Honeybee circuit in that regard.
The mod addresses the one major complaint that you hear about this otherwise very popular pedal: too much bass. The problem is that it’s impossible to tell whether people are talking about bass before distortion (which makes the breakup farty/spitty) or bass after distortion (booming, blooming, muddying up the amp’s tone). Moreover, the ‘right’ amount of bass depends on the amp being used, and whether it is being overdriven itself.
Howdy. I am requesting your opinion on something. I just bought a Boss OD3 after reading overwhelmingly positive reviews about it. Normally I try before buying but how could so many people be tone deaf? Well...I don't know if you've tried this pedal but if so, have you experienced a "clashing of harmonics" kind of sound, particularly on the higher strings? Other terms for this may be "harsh", "ratty", "not smooth", "ripped speaker distortion", or "warble". Thank you. Mitch.
I think there might be several things going on here. Prepare for wall of text.
1. I have no idea how loud you’re playing. Most OD pedals that have achieved legendary status (Tubescreamer, SD-1, etc.) do NOT sound good at bedroom/practice levels. They lack a certain polish that modern circuits have, being more often prized for how they interact with an amp, rather than their own self-contained sound. For example, the mid hump in the Tubescreamer sounds terrible by itself, but when pushing a mid-scooped amp (like any Fender) into breakup, maintains note separation at higher gain levels than a clean boost would. A big part of this is also dynamic interaction between the speakers and guitar, which you don’t get at bedroom levels either.

i really like this overdrive pedal. some of you gear-heads might not even give this thing a chance because it's a Boss...but don't be like that bro.
i've been trying hard to think of a good way to describe how this stompbox is better than most of the ones i've tried, and i think i've finally thought of something...
ok, so think of your base tone as a strong, fully grown oak tree. this pedal's overdrive is basically a beautifully built tree house ON that oak tree, taking nothing away. both the tree and the dwelling on top are equally shown off.
on the flip side, a less desirable overdrive would cut the tree down and build a nice house in place of where it once stood. you may still have something nice, but it is at the expense of your already established tone.
i'm not quite sure what it is, sonically, that makes them different. my guess is the amount of compression and tone shaping abilities in each pedal.
if you're in search of some mystical green pedal, just stop that now, 'cause you're wasting your time. this pedal is dynamic, transparent, natural and smooth! :)
