Hereâs some more interesting #history: This is #JuliaChinn. Julia was a slave but had a major impact on politics in Kentucky & America in the 1800s & was a wife to one of our early Vice Presidentâs. But her legacy has been erased from history, literally, historians are still unable to find her grave. Julia was an #octoroon #mixedrace woman (7/8 #European & 1/8 #African in ancestry), born into slavery around 1790. She had grown up in the home of Robert Johnson, where her mother served. His 2nd eldest son, Richard Mentor Johnson began a relationship with Julia & treated her as his common-law wife. They had 2 daughters & she later became manager of his plantation. They were prohibited from marrying because she was a slave. Richard represented Kentucky in the House & in the Senate. He was âunusualâ for being open about his relationship & they acted like a married couple. According to oral tradition, other slaves at the plantation were said to be working on their wedding. He acknowledged their children. They took his last name. They inherited property from him & he liberated them. But he never liberated Julia... In 1825, they built the Choctaw Academy which was a school for #NativeAmerican boys. She ends up running that too. She was also a nurse & took care of the students. A cholera pandemic came in 1833 & she was responsible for aiding them once a student got exposed. It spread quickly. Sadly, she succumbed to the disease as well & passed away. Richard became VP in 1836 but was considered very unhappy after Julia passed. Once he passed away in 1850, all remaining evidences of their relationship were destroyed by his family. *Thanks again to all the medical professionals helping us during our own pandemic.* đșđžđŽđłïž #womenshistorymonth #mixedgirl https://www.instagram.com/p/B-Uq5EFldjm/?igshid=1em91mobtgr0m
Thereâs Nothing Quite Like An Octoroon
Picture caption: Neal A. Ghant and Kylie Brown perform in Branden Jacobs-Jenkinsâ âAn Octoroonâ at Actorâs Express. CONTRIBUTED BY CASEY GARDNER PHOTOGRAPHY Photo: For the AJC
As a way to partake in the festivities happening in my hometown of Atlanta, I accepted an invitation to attend the play, âAn Octoroonâ currently in rotation at Actorâs Express located in the King Plow Arts Center.
There are times where our quest for âwanderlustingâ takes an unexpected turn and this moment fits the bill.
Going to the theatre is one of those activities we deem, necessary in a âwandererâsâ life. Itâs EXPRESSIVE. It offers ESCAPISM. Itâs CAPTIVATING and sometimes itâs also JARRING, which can be a contradiction to the very essence of WANDERLUSTING.Â
I donât think I was thinking it would be a JARRING experience as much as I thought it would be captivating and my escapism from work and well, Super Bowl. However, I would suddenly encounter an experience that left me discombobulated, to say the least.
If youâre unaware, an Octoroon was a term used to describe a person who is 1/8th black. The root word octo to form eighth and the ending, roon, deriving from...coon? Well if you ask Virginiaâs current governor, Ralph Northam, Iâm sure he would disagree on the latter. I digress.Â
Basically, if you were able to âpassâ for white, back in the day, you were considered an âOctoroonâ. There was âslave talkâ, black face, white face, Asian actors as slaves and slaves speaking in modern-day talk and epithets, while also speaking in âcoonâ language. *Let it be noted, I am an African-American* it was mind-spinning.Â
To put it in perspective, âAn Octoroonâ does an amazing job of addressing racism, identity politics, gross stereotypes and itâs juxtaposition in modern-day versus past history to illustrate while some things have changed, many things have not and they also have simply changed clothes.
Check out a brilliant review by the AJC and in celebratory Black History month, if youâre planning to visit Atlanta, home of âThe Civil Rights Movementâ this play is a must see.

Are we to allow the creation of an unwanted third race? Should the coloreds be encouraged to go back to the Black? Or should they be advanced to white status and be absorbed in the white population? âŠ..No trace of native origin is apparent. The continuing infiltration of white blood finally stamps out the black color.
The aboriginal has simply been breed out.

The world seems to be in apocalyptic mode at the moment. I am in the UK and have been a bystander to the recent really horrific events hereâŠ.the slaughter of innocents at a music concert in Manchester, the brutal attack of people having a fun night out on London Bridge, the unimaginable fire in a tower block, near to where I am staying and now the attempted murder of Muslims in another ferociousâŠ

Bad Feeling lyrics ~
[Hook] I got a bad feeling Itâs gonna rain like crazy Itâs gonna rain plantations Itâs gonna rain brown arms I got a bad feeling Itâs gonna blow forever Itâs gonna blow bandanas Itâs gonna blow sky high
Lately I canât get on the good foot Lately I canât get on that train Lately I canât remember faces Lately I canât remember names
Do I manipulate the outcome? Or is it manipulating me? Reckon- I reckon I can get a witness Only within the state of Tennessee
I got a bad feeling Itâs gonna rain like crazy Itâs gonna rain plantations Itâs gonna rain brown arms
Something is telling me oughtta fly right If just to find a warmer avenue I donât think I would need a purple heart If I could do all right with one thatâs red
* different strokes for different folks my own religion is in my song I am everyday people
Wonder if all that glitters is golden Or just a manufactured diamelle Wish I - I had the answers to the questions Then I would write a book that really sells
