As promised, Elara Dayne from Our Choices Seal Our Fate.Ā
I was holed up in the frozen north for an early Christmas with my boyfriendās family so I decided to bring my laptop and get some painting in. Iām surprisingly okay with how this turned out (for once). Mustāve been all that free time I had up in that log cabin all weekend.Ā

Hey Edd, one particular part of your writing really stands out. You actually write a Robert Baratheon that's true to the books. In nearly every fan version Bobby B is cast as a wife beater whose sole purpose is to get in the way of the perfect romance of Lyanna and Rhaegar. In both Ocsof and Atfd you actually portray him very true to Martin's warrior-king deconstruction. Bitter, boisterous, womanising, really an asshole at times, but still capable of kindness and remorse. Always a good read.
Hey, thanks. Hearing things like that makes me feel better about how I write. Much like Rhaegar, Robert is a character I quite dislike and I try my best to make them real people rather than just walking fault machines. I might view him as a piece of shit abuser but Iām glad to hear I capture some of the qualities that made him likeable in verse.
I saw a previous post where you responded to someone asking why you didn't have Myrcella named Visenya or whatever, and it got me think on your response. I don't know if this was explained in the fic, but at the very least, with Jon as one of his three Dragon heads, why wasn't Jon then given a Targ name? Basically what I'm asking is why wasn't Jon in OCSOF called Jonarys like he was in the Conquest?
This oneās easy, explained in Chapter One
Eddard POV:In a flash, Ned was back at the Tower of Joy, kneeling next to Lyannaās bloodstained bed. In one arm he clutched a sleeping babe while his free hand held his sisterās clammy and weak one. She was weeping tears of blood and her breathing became more and more strained.
āYou name him Nedā¦ā Lyanna had said. āThe best of us⦠you were the best of us. I trust you to watch over him⦠my babe⦠keep him safeā¦ā
āOf course, Lya.ā Heād wept as well. āIāll care for him like heās my own.ā
āHis name Ned⦠tell me it before⦠my sonās nameā¦ā
The choice had been easy for him in a way, to name this boy he would love as a son he thought of the man who had loved him as a son. Who had sheltered Ned in the Vale when the Mad King called for his head.
āJon.ā Ned had kissed Lyannaās hand. āThis is your son Lya, this is Jon.ā
āJonā¦ā She reached for the babe and Ned let her press a gentle kiss to the babeās brow. āOh gods Ned spare him all this pain⦠all the follies⦠keep him safeā¦ā
āPromise me, Ned.ā
Now there was nothing holding Rhaegar to accepting Jonās name as it was. He couldāve changed it to something more Targaryen-esque. If Lyanna hadnāt died, he probably wouldāve.
It just wasnāt in him to overrule one of her last acts as his short-lived queen.Ā
