For Lyra, Kasnaou is a bit of a bore, but in a way that she enjoys. He's grounded, he's stern, but in a way that she can tell is loving. She makes her want to make him proud, he's devoted, he's loyal, and most of all he's trustworthy. He's her mentor, and the rate he's going he's more like a father figure to her.
For Kasnaou, he sees himself as loyal but restricted and a bit of a coward for not standing up for himself better. He wants Lyra to be better than him, able to fight back in ways that he was never able or willing to.
