this could be either a fic prompt OR a headcanons prompt, whatever floats ur boat but: how jake discovered amy's terrifying love of jeopardy
thank u bella! <3
okay I had to go into a one shot for this bc: aaaaaah, jeopardy!!!! my old friend
without further ado:
***
The first time Jake experiences Jeopardy Amy, or, as heās named her- JeopardAmy, is in their second week as a couple.
Itās asurprisingly chilly night, given the time of year. Over and over, he finds heās cursing himself, climbing out ofhis car with a bag so full with food itāshaving him struggle to lock the car- once he manages it heās dashing into her building, hoping, praying, sheās read his texts and wonāt hatehim for being a good half an hour late.
Eventually, after this ridiculously clunky elevator hashauled itself to her floor, heāsoutside her door. He knocks awkwardly, pressing himself against the door so hecan keep hold of the bag. Thereās noanswer. Faintly, from the inside, he can hear her TV playing- sheās there, alright. Sheād about as much leave her apartmentwith her TV still switched on as sheād jumpout of the window in lieu of the elevator.
āAmes? Itās meeee,ā he announces, opening the door, āyour favourite person and the sexiest detective in theNYPD-ā
āJake, ssh!ā
She cuts him off effortlessly; her shush is the mostpowerful, if slightly threatening thing heās everheard.
He doesnāt care-the image of her right now is so beautifully amusing that he has to restrainhimself from laughing, or at least taking a picture; sat in the middle of hercouch, her throw blanket is wrapped around her so her face is the only thingpoking out of it, her intensely wide-eyed, fixated expression framed by theblanket.
He catches sight of the television, where the recognisableset of Jeopardy! is visible, and itall makes sense.
Repeatedly, sheāsspoken about this show at work- thereās evena rumour that, once, particularly angered by a recent episode, sheād called the studio where it wasfilmed and shouted down the phone- Rosa maintains to this day that shewitnessed this, and that Amy is now no longer legally permitted to contactthem.
The sight of her is almost eerie, Jake thinks, watching hercarefully as he sits next to her on the couch. Sheās barely blinking, the cool glow of the TV screen in hereyes, occasionally muttering to herself, repeating whatever it is the presenteroffers up.
āThe only U.S. island⦠allowed a possessive apostropheā¦ā her gaze doesnāt shift. She barely blinks.
He pulls the boxes of takeout from the bag and puts them onher coffee table, making sure to lay them on the placemats sheās kept on the side since he startedcoming here more often. He doesnāt carethat itās the same approach his Nanaused to tackle his messy eating when he was a kid- Amyās happy to have him eating here, and thatās all that matters.
āOh my god⦠I know this⦠you know this, Amyā¦ā
Jake doesnāt openhis food just yet, no matter how much he wants to- heās scared of making any noise, any movement thatāll distract her.
Itās apretty conscientious move on his part, he thinks, given how long heās gone without food- if you can callhis candy-based lunch āfoodā- but heās half-petrified and half-in-love with this insanely tenseobsession and the way itāsmaking her act, and couldnāt makehimself stop it if he tried.
This contributes to half the shock when she blindly whackshim in the face.
āMARTHAāS VINEYARD!ā
Amy yells so loud he jumps, jolting upright, caught offguard- totally unaware of her outthrown hand as she throws it up, a deft, harshhit to his nose.
āOH, my-ā are the only words he manages, immediately trying to stifle his reaction as his hands fly to his faceprotectively.
āJake! Oh my god, oh my god, Iām sosorry,ā she apologises, over andover, panic filling her voice. āIāll get a cloth, or something, oh mygod-ā Her voice trails off as shedisappears hurriedly into the kitchen.
āItās okay, itās fine,ā he tries, his voice tight, but, reaching for his nose, he finds his hand covered in a hot stickiness that can onlymean blood. āAgh.ā
He can hear her opening and closing cupboards behind himbefore she comes running back into the living area, clutching a handful oftissues.
āTake a few to stop thebleeding and Iāll clean the rest,ā she clambers onto the couch next tohim, her leg over his, almost sat on his lap- āOh,Jake.ā This is quiet, regretful, asshe dabs gently at the blood.
āHonestly, itās all good,ā he insists cheerfully, but he can hear the slight shockstill in his voice. āYāknow, I was actually waiting for theright moment to tell you that being surprise-punched by women is a huge kink ofmine, so youāve actually done me a favour.ā
āOh my god,ā she chuckles softly, relaxing alittle at his joking, though still rolling her eyes in that way heās so used to. āIāmsorry.ā
āIt was an accident,ā he says sincerely. āAlthough, I may have to insist we banJeopardy! as watching material if Iām within a two-meter radius of you.ā
āYes, good idea,ā she enthuses, but her face falls- ābut I tried that last time, and itonly really works if I donāt startthrowing things.ā
āLast time?ā
āI winded my brother byelbowing him in the stomach,ā sheadmits.
āNoice, noice,ā he replies quickly, making herlaugh, āoh, side note, did I mention youāre petrifying and I love it?ā
She smiles sheepishly, scrunching up her face as she gigglessoftly at his response. A dimple in her cheek, one heās noticed but only ever from afar, becomes prominent asher dark hair falls into her face while she laughs. A punch administered by someonethis beautiful, he figures, is almost worth it- that is, if the fond swoon forher in his chest is anything to go by.
Quietly, she leans in to inspect the damage, chuckling, andapologising, and pressing a repentant kiss against his mouth. Heāll not admit it, but as she chats andtends to him and he makes her laugh, a confession to himself tells him that hewouldnāt mind if she did it again.
