the world around him is a screaming mess of METAL, the soft whoosh of engines igniting, the crackle and scream of flames licking at bodies trapped in the dented cages of their planes. he’s dazed but not lost, taking a minute to blink away the fogginess lingering around the edges of his vision, the outskirts of his mind. when he comes back to himself, no more than a moment later ( he’s always had good reaction time -- he’s had to -- and this is no exception ) he’s shouting to his crew to get the hell out of here, dragging his own body out of the wreckage before their bomber, too, combusts.
he reemerges into the open air, toppling GRACELESSLY onto hard ground, and gulps in heaving breaths of air, trying to get his heart rate under control. he knew this was a terrible idea; he knew it. those damn things don’t belong in the air, always have a way of becoming grounded again that brings nothing but death and destruction with them. len stumbles away from his bomber on unsteady legs, watching numbly as whatever’s left of his crew pull themselves out, a bizarre parody of childbirths he once bore witness to. the two that are left ( two out of ten, he realizes with a sudden wave of nausea ) seem to be surprisingly, miraculously, more or less unharmed ( one broken arm with a deep but not life-threatening gash on the thigh, one with a severe concussion and dislocated shoulder ).
there are two more planes in the area, one in pieces, entirely charred, its ruins smoldering, the other more or less whole ( chunks missing but he hears people, sees a limping form moving to clamber back inside ). his legs are moving before he realizes it, carrying him at as brisk a pace as he can manage towards the jet with the man reaching into it, and he grabs for the other’s form with firm hands, shouting up to him with barely-suppressed disbelief. ❝ the hell are y’doin’, kid? lucky enough y’got out in the first place, now quit temptin’ fate! that thing could blow any minute now! ❞
