I have been thinking more and more about Pavlo if I were to put him into Mistria (he's a standalone OC, not a Mistria OC), mostly who I would ship him with!
Since he's an alien scientist tasked with studying humans, I could see him getting along well with characters who could teach him a lot about a particular aspect of humans and human culture. The ones that come to mind are Valen (medicine, biology), Eiland (history), Errol (history), Reina (cooking), Taliferro (cooking but in a mean way), and Louis (clothing/fashion; Pavlo would have to get tailored sizes from him anyway). I could also see him getting along with Caldarus, because they're both learning about humans (they're also both really tall)! Some of these obviously wouldn't work or would play out in ways that are more funny than romantic. I might sketch out some silly stuff and see which characters have the most fun interactions.

Thinking about what one of my existing OCs would be like if he was in Fields of Mistria....
Pavlo is a scientist alien and he loves meeting new people! He would think the mines are really scary though so he couldn't help out much in town.
Any writing tips for lore & stuff? I'm in a bit of funk for my ocs right now. 😔💔
I totally get this because I struggled for the longest time 😭 It's why I only have two main OCs I write and draw currently (technically 3 if Fiore's original non-Fields of Mistria version can be counted). Wheedle is a very very weird case for me because I've never put so much of my own headcanons and personal writing into a canon character before. He feels vaguely OC-ified even though I try to keep him close to canon in behavior, so I will reference him a little bit in this too since it's been the same process for him as my OCs.
These things have helped me grow really attached to my characters:
⊱⋆ Draw/write random little snippets or dialogues! If I'm having trouble with a new chapter of Fiore's fanfic, I'll sometimes start in the middle at the most interesting part. It helps me figure out how I want the rest of it to go, because it's a good jumping off point. This can be done with whole backstories and stuff too! Fiore's story was not planned out chronologically.
⊱⋆ Random questions/prompts! When I was in a call with my friends, one of them asked if Pavlo would like the tea that I was drinking. My friends will message me and ask me how my characters/ship would react to certain things too. It does help when other people do this, but I've been finding myself starting to wonder these things too as I just go throughout my day. Wheedle is not my OC obviously, but I wondered if he would eat the tomatoes off my sandwich if I asked him to (my version of him would….) How would your OC react to a random thing?
⊱⋆ Figuring out the core of the character/what truly motivates them has made everything else fall into place naturally. If you know why your OC behaves the way they do, then you'll be able to write them effortlessly!
⊱⋆ Roleplaying….. This one is embarrassing but I truly did fall in love with Pavlo after a group of my friends held a big month-long rp session. It helped me figure out who he was and how he would react to people, and what kind of things would make him (a very happy character) angry! Before this, he was just a design with some vague ideas. This also helps friends/others become more interested in your characters! My friends all loved Pavlo just as much as me after the rp 🥹
⊱⋆ Playlists, template memes, etc. @Renamistria and I are always sending each other little OC/ship memes/templates to fill out.
⊱⋆ Sometimes you have to just try different things until something works. Experiment with different backstories, personality traits, motivations, etc until you find something that truly clicks into place. In Fiore's case, she worked way better as a direct competitor to Wheedle than as his reluctant employee (what I original wrote and drew her as, shown below).
Good is subjective! If it makes you happy, go with it !!
In my case with Fiore, she leans just slightly more into self insert than purely an OC, which does make me feel more connected to her. Her goals, history, and desires overlap with mine, and I'm writing her story as a way to help me figure out my own stuff in life. Her story is symbolic of a story I feel I can't tell in any form other than this. It makes me very happy to show her being happy (and mischievous!)
For my other OC Pavlo, I see him as a representation of my desire to travel more and meet as many new and interesting people as possible. He's an alien that initially was tasked to study human culture, but he's found that he's reluctant to return home because of how much he loves humans. His tattoos are stick and pokes done by all different people he's met!
For FoM specifically, I think having an understanding of the world can help the character fit in more. There is a lot to play around with in terms of headcanons too! When I first made Fiore, she was Wheedle's reluctant employee. But I wanted her to be her own character instead of an addition to a character, which is where the street performing and opera house history came into play. I did have to do a lot of research on opera and performing arts, as well as consuming media from the time period I headcanon Mistria takes place in. Now she feels like a pair with him instead of Wheedle "plus" Fiore. I do headcanon a lot of aspects of Wheedle too that I think adds to the overall dynamic.
I think I wrote way more than I needed to, but adding aspects to my characters that I find personally relatable and want to learn from has helped me stay enthusiastic in developing them. Plus it's easier to write from experience!
Edit: I forgot to add, taking inspiration from media of various formats has also been very very helpful. Fiore's story and the visuals for it have elements from Twin Peaks (tv show and movie), Better Call Saul (tv show), Nana (manga), Silent Hill 3 & 4 (video games), The Yellow Wallpaper (story), and american silent film comedies from the 1920s - 30s.
I've never shared too much of my other characters here because I do fear sharing things that aren't what people necessarily followed me fore, BUT I want to share non-Mistria things gradually.
This is Pavlo !!! He's an alien scientist that is tasked with studying other cultures and lifeforms. While on these missions, he projects as a form that would be acceptable enough (but he is unable to fully hide what he is.) He is a very happy, gentle, and curious character. He'll adopt languages and customs to the best of his ability. As a result, he is a very worldly character despite retaining his overall naivety. Most of my exploration of him is in the form of writing and roleplays with friends, so he doesn't have a huge backlog of art. But I want to fix that soon! Pavlo means a lot to me and depicting him makes me very happy. He is tied with Fiore as my most beloved OC.
