Good news: weâre in the final stages of this series! Itâs finally the turn of the third sin, which has featured heavily in far cry 5 lore as part of the generic deputyâs personality. Itâs my pleasure to speak aboutâŚ
Wrath (Latin: Ira)
"Defined as uncontrolled feelings of anger, rage, and even hatred. Wrath often reveals itself in the wish to seek vengeance. In its purest form, wrath presents with injury, violence, and hate that may provoke feuds that can go on for centuries." [x]
Why Wrath is in the place it is: Of the many things I wanted to incorporate from canon, Wrath was essential. I couldnât ignore it while I was playing, nor I could while watching John Seedâs boss fight and eventual deathâyet, how does Wrath manifest in Leslie?
One of the things you have to know itâs that sheâs a deeply sensitive person beneath her solemn semblanceâwhich means, for the most part, sheâs finely tuned to her emotions, aware of them in consistently through the hours, days and weeks of her life. These intense feelings are kept in check unless sheâs with someone she knows and is comfortable with; so, when she experiences rage, it shows.
The causes of said rage have varied over the years, but it has been motivated in multiple occasions by seeing her loved ones, friends and community get hurt by external forcesâit incidences her to no end, make her see red. She got into fights because of it (repressed anger doesnât do well with someone whoâs highly driven by her goals, caffeine and pressure) but Wrath also encouraged her in certain moments. She has worked hard on her self-restraint for years, and has been considerably relaxed following her lifeâs return to normal in her late teens (chilling out does wonders to oneâs ire after all), but if she were to witness a single act of injustice towards people she cares about/was entrusted to protect her anger will make her jump to intercede and that wonât turn out well, at all.
Eye Contact
Just a little fic surrounding a character of my own so iâts gonna be different to my usuals. Almost a character study I guess.
One thing Alex had never been very good with, was looking someone in the eye. It truly made her uncomfortable. On one hand, she had no idea how long she was supposed to look at a person while she was talking. If you donât look at someone enough while one of you is talking, youâre rude or weird. If you look at them for too long youâre weird or creepy. She never quite resolved that in her mind. But a bigger problem was what looking into another personâs eyes meant. What no one else seemed to realize it meant.
The eyes are the window to the soul. What gives me the right, thought Alex, to look into a strangersâ soul? The eyes always betrayed the emotion that the rest of the face could hide. And if someone was trying to hide something from her, a perfect stranger, then they were entitled to.
No one quite understood any of her reasons for not using eye-contact a majority of the time. But she stuck by them, even doing her best to brush off comments of teachers and adults calling her rude or disrespectful.
The Doctor understood, she knew that much. She had been travelling with him for a good three weeks now and still couldnât tell you what color his eyes were. Sure, sheâd seen them at some point, but usually from a distance or angle that made it near impossible to see any details of them. She knew he had noticed her avoiding meeting his eyes, and she had seen him glancing at her from the corner of his, but he didnât comment on it.
There was eventually a day, while some rude alien was berating her for being disrespectful, she tried to explain how eye-contact made her uncomfortable. Of course, that just chased the alien off with a âweirdoâ thrown over-shoulder. The Doctor patted her lightly on the shoulder, but got right back to work on saving the world. When he was finished he sat her down in the console room, leaning against the console across from her.
He breached the topic carefully, more careful than she mightâve thought was possible. He assured her that not looking at people âproperlyâ was fine.
âYou explained your issue with the matter. So seeing that it makes you uncomfortable, you never have to do it if you donât want toâ He explained. âAnd if people donât understand that, well itâs their problem isnât it?â She smiled at that. She glanced up from the corner of her eye, just enough to see that the Doctor was staring at a fixed point on the floor. That made her smile wider as she glanced away.
âThanks Docâ She told him, eyes fixed on the collar of his coat. âIâm glad you understandâ
*taps microphone awkwardly* Uh, this was supposed to have been posted yesterday, but life got in the way (as always) and I was too exhausted to do it. The schedule will still be the same (i.e. youâll still get the fourth sin today) but to not interrupt the line youâll have the fifth one earlier.
Anyways, weâll talk about Lesâ fifth sin, which isâŚ
Greed (Latin: Avaritia)
"Inordinate or insatiable longing for unneeded excess, especially for excess wealth, status, power, or food. As secular psychological concept, greed is an inordinate desire to acquire or possess more than one needs." [x | x]
Why Greed is in the place it is: I could argue this is one of the sins that she has toned down from her youth â it was higher on the list during those times when her familyâs finances were in shambles and she had to go hunting for jobs. Restoring the bank accounts to what they have been was one of the motivations that made her go forward tirelessly, mulishly, just to bail her mother out of the mess her uncle left for her. Money, money, money â one of her main worries back then. Fortunately, it paid off in the end, but sheâs still pretty frugal when it comes to her savings. Otherwise, sheâs doesnât actively crave more than what she already has, as cash is no longer an issue for her. After Hope County becomes a literal warzone Leslie makes most of the money to buy ammo and/or weapons by selling the skins of the animals she hunts; occasionally giving into looting abandoned houses and prepper stashes when she canât hunt or there isnât any option left.

The Seven Deadly Sins Week
To start off with 2019, Iâve decided to make this little exploration of my deputyâs sins to look at her character as a whole and see how to fit her into the Far Cry 5 universe. I wish I couldâve written drabbles that show the way these sins are manifested, but unfortunately I wouldnât be able to do so until short notice. In the meantime, though, Iâll post moodboards in the following six days and write my reasoning as for why that sin in particular doesnât affect her, from weakest to strongest.
Weâll start with her weakest sin, which isâŚ
Sloth (Latin: Acedia)
"Defined as absence of interest or habitual disinclination to exertion. [...] Spiritually, acedia first referred to an affliction attending religious persons, especially monks, wherein they became indifferent to their duties and obligations to God." [x]
Why Sloth is in the place it is: Leslieâs incapable of omitting her duties when she knows theyâve to carried outâher sense of responsibility has always been strong, instilled on her at an early age by her paternal family, whose way of life required them to that way. Her teens, on the other hand, were defined by the heavy amount of tasks she took to help people around her, building up the âalways reliableâ reputation sheâd have later in life.Â
A consequence of those events is her mind not allowing her to rest just for the sake of being lazy anymore; she has to be doing something until she eventually overtaxes herself to exhaustion (the amount of outdoor activity she has, in addition to her hobbies and erratic sleep patterns, can attest to that). Once war breaks out in Hope County, you bet sheâll be doing her job all the time.
That said, sheâs capable of taking a break from time to time, mind you. It usually happens when people arenât calling her on the radio to liberate outposts or screw up the peggiesâ plans. Part of the reason she moved to Hope County was because she sought peace and quiet, to enjoy to not to have the hefty mental stress baggage big responsibilities bring with them after years of being peopleâs personal rock, so imagine her exasperation when Joseph Seed decides to begin his Reaping just weeks before she fulfills a year in the deputy job. Sheâs not happy, in the least.
Super late but at least the schedule wasnât as screwed as I thought it would be. Oh well, I hope you all donât mind me rambling about this in the notes and, later in the day, when I post the first sin (which you already know).
Time to talk about the second sin!
Lust (Latin: Luxuria)
"Psychological force producing intense wanting for an object, or circumstance fulfilling the emotion. Lust can take any form such as the lust for sexuality, money or power. It can take such mundane forms as the lust for food as distinct from the need for food." [x | x]
Why Lust is the place it is: I know what the common associations with âlustâ are but hear me out. This sin in relation to her is less of a desire for sex and more of a longing for certain objectives that have been lacking in her life: stability, support, security; things that keep slipping through her fingers every time she looks for them, sometimes in all the wrong places. She becomes a risk-taker when it comes to them, chooses at the rocky way and goes through the storm in an effort to reach these goals. Itâs is an intense longing that burns steadily inside her and pushes her to previously undreamt-of ends.Â
However, itâs not only about the three Sâs, itâs also about happiness, comfort, love. Deep down, Leslie recognizes all of these ideas push her to work harder, drive her day-to-day actions, and motivate her to go ahead with the hope of one day being able to experience them on her own. The issue with her, you see, is that she keeps looking the other way, trying to give herself in everything she does, and she loses track of these internal wishes of hers. They were clearer to her when she was a teen, I think, but moving to Hope County made her consider perspectives she hadnât pondered before. To sum it up, Hope County has made her think seriously about what she wants, but she hasnât exactly figured out what she needs either.
As for âlustâ in the traditional sense... she has had sex in the past (Les is not a saint, after all) but I would think she keeps a tight grip on her passions. This doesnât mean she doesnât feel them, just that she considers that there are certain moments for this and for that.
I must admit that part of the reason I started the Seven Deadly Sins Week in January was because itâs easy for me to keep track of the sins by the day I post them. Itâs kinda silly, but I had the âanalysesâ (which should be longer and more elaborate but Sloth is my primary sin for a reason) and the moodboards made before January and I wanted to show them to you. Itâs not writing, but itâs a small development exercise for my baby that I can do in the meantime. So, yeah.
Behold, the sin Joseph considers fitting of the Deputy in canon:
Pride (Latin: Superbia)
"Identified as dangerously corrupt selfishness, the putting of one's own desires, urges, wants, and whims before the welfare of other people. In even more destructive cases, it is irrationally believing that one is essentially and necessarily better, superior, or more important than others." [x]
Why Pride is in the place it is: Iâve thought about this one quite a few times, considering the religious definition of âprideâ is actually opposite to what makes Leslie, well, her. In essence, Leslieâs still a loner. Even when thereâs a notable improvement when it comes to opening up to people and making friends, she prefers to resolve matters concerning her alone. She doesnât like putting people in danger if theyâre with her, so she may insist on doing the dangerous part herself. Her stubbornness about it is what makes âprideâ in the fourth place of the list â once her mind is set, thereâs nothing/no one else that can dissuade her. She has been so used to rely on herself for everything that asking for help is still difficult for her, even for emotional/stress-related matters.
In Hope County, she tries to not rely too much on her Guns/Fangs for Hire, only for her to get yelled at by her friends or be given judgmental looks from her furred companions when she returns wounded from her missions. Sheâs slowly learning, but as the saying goes: old habits die hard.
(Itâs worth noting that Leslie enjoys the feeling of satisfaction and delight praise and compliments bring in, it makes her glow with positivity and stimulates her determination to work even further. Thatâs the other type of pride present in her: she has to confidence to take the leader mantle when itâs necessary, though there may be doubts from time to time).
