After finding the tracker on Lola, they weren’t taking chances. Sully landed back on Mapuzo, and began inspecting the ship for more. Obi-Wan moved forward to help, but Tala touched his forearm. “Let her have a few moments to mourn Wade,” she said softly. “Besides, Sully can sniff out a tracker in ten minutes: we’d just be getting underfoot.”

Obi-Wan nodded, turning his attention back to Leia. She’d gone very quiet after they’d pulled and deactivated the tracker from Lola, and, just to be sure, crushed it under their heels. Lola fluttered around Leia anxiously. He gently squeezed Leia’s shoulder. “It’s not your fault, Leia,” he said softly. “You wouldn’t have known what to look for.”

“But I should’ve noticed that Lola was acting odd earlier,” Leia said. “What if they put another tracker on her—one that we wouldn’t notice?”

“They wouldn’t have done that,” Tala soothed, but Obi-Wan shared Leia’s worry. It wasn’t likely, yes, but he hadn’t thought it likely that the Empire would try and torture a child or encase hundreds of Jedi and younglings in amber. Tala glanced quickly from Obi-Wan and Leia and changed tack. “But it couldn’t hurt to check, just to be sure.”

“Ben should check,” Leia said. “He fixed Lola before, so he’d know what to look for—well, more or less what to look for.” Lola fluttered into Obi-Wan’s palm. Leia smiled at her, before becoming serious again. “What about the other one?” Before Obi-Wan could answer, Tala cut in.

“Well, there’s one way to make sure it’s dealt with,” Tala said, pulling out her blaster. “You said you wanted to learn how to shoot, didn’t you, Leia?” Leia’s eyes lit up and a big grin spread across her face. She turned to Obi-Wan to make sure it was okay, but she didn’t need to ask: after her experience on Nur, he wanted her to be ready for anything. Tala took Leia’s hand and led her to a little stack of rocks, while Obi-Wan turned his attention to Lola.

His worries about Lola having another tracker were alleviated immediately: Lola opened herself up of her own volition so that he could poke and prod at her circuits. Obi-Wan patted the droid reassuringly before turning his attention over to Leia and Tala’s impromptu shooting lesson. The rock pile and the tracker pieces were both piles of ash, and Tala had started throwing her officer hat into the air for Leia to shoot. Obi-Wan tried to focus on Leia, but his gaze kept shifting back to Tala. Her hair had fallen out of its bun, and her dark curls bounced around her shoulders each time she threw the hat upwards.

In the short time he’d known her, he’d always seen Tala as serious and tense, always planning her next move: getting him and Leia off Mapuzo, getting him medical attention on Jabiim, rescuing Leia from Fortress Inquisitorius. Then again, he supposed she could say the same about him. But watching Tala break into a massive grin as Leia hit the cap and whirling her around in a massive hug…well, it unlocked something in him that he hadn’t felt in ten years. Something that made his heart race a little faster and made his whole body feel a little bit lighter.

As Tala put Leia down, she caught Obi-Wan’s eye, and he realized he’d been staring. He quickly looked away, feeling his cheeks burn, before daring to look back over. She’d started to pick up the cap and its ashes from the ground, but her cheeks had gone bright pink too, and a shy smile was dancing across her features. Her eyes flickered back over to him, and they both looked away again.

Leia ran back over. “Did you see me? Did you see me hit it?” she said, bouncing on the balls of her feet. “I know you were looking over there the whole time, but I just wanted to make sure no one distracted you.” Obi-Wan’s cheeks went hotter, but he couldn’t help a small smile crossing his face at being caught out.

“I did see,” he said, and Lola chirped the affirmative. “I take it that Tala was a good teacher?”

“She’s amazing,” Leia crowed. Obi-Wan’s eyes slid back over to Tala as she walked back, the light dancing across her like a painting.

I love Tala I know the show isn’t about shipping, it’s more than that, but also maybe sorta I kinda think that maybe Tala and Obi Wan should kiss. (🥲)

Person A: It's okay to be scared sometimes.

Person B: I know. But when I'm with you...I'm not scared anymore.

The door hisses shut, and Tala maneuvers the ship into Alderaanian air. Obi-Wan watches as Leia and her family grow smaller on the platform below. He watches until he cannot see them any longer, and, eventually, even the imposing mountain ranges grow minuscule as the ship jumps to hyperspace.

Obi-Wan pulls himself away from the door.

He breathes deeply.

Then he joins Tala in the front of the ship.
